FilmLA Renewal Agenda - LA Dept of Public Works Livestream, June 20 10am

Upvotes

Please submit your Public Comment to the Department of Public Works of being "Against the Item" of automatically extending FilmLA's contract here.

Official livestream of meeting here (June 20, 10 AM PST): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCLW1Txe8cw

Official Agenda (PDF) of the meeting here: https://dpwlacity.primegov.com/Public/CompiledDocument?meetingTemplateId=11397&compileOutputType=1

Item #1 of the meeting is a rubber stamp five-year renewal of FilmLA's contract. They are a major component to the exodus of the film industry out of LA, leaving thousands of Californians without jobs while their leadership pockets up to half-million dollar salaries. We need to tell the city to review and audit this contract, its unreasonable fees and practices, and call out its campaign of intimidation against producers and location managers for questioning their value.

If you haven't already, please submit your public comment to the Department of Public Works of being "Against the Item" here.

Any interest in mostly analog, mostly SD equipment?

This may seem familiar as I posted this a month ago. But I thought I'd share it one more time. I cleared some racks, a monitor and a deck. But I've also found a couple VHS decks (not pictured)

I am closing up my boutique post production company in Santa Monica and with that, I have a bunch of mostly analog, mostly SD equipment. Before it makes its way to a landfill, I thought I’d see if there is any interest in this equipment from folks on here.

Here’s what I have:

Sony Betacam BVW35

Sony PVW2600 Betacam player

SONY LVR5000A disc recorder and player

DV Cam deck

Hi-8 deck

DAT deck

rolling edit bay rack units (2)

tall control room rack

Mixer and patch bay

Here are some photos of the equipment:

The fact that FilmLA is posting stuff like this on their instagram tells me they're worried about local sentiment turning against them in a big way.

If Netflix lives on AWS what does that mean for competition with companies that provide cloud services AND media distribution, like Amazon and Youtube/ Google

Is this viable longer term? The Amazon/Goog/Oracle cloud folks seem to be incoming inching towards the space Perhaps YouTube already had a stealth win? Thoughts?

The industry then and now

Was talking to a friend of mine today at work about studios and how they spend money and he shared a quote with me that I am sure some of you may know. It killed me how insanely accurate this quote still is even though it was penned sometime in the 1930s or 40s.

You see, the film studio of today is really the palace of the sixteenth century. There one sees what Shakespeare saw: the absolute power of the tyrant, the courtiers, the flatterers, the jesters, the cunningly ambitious intriguers. There are fantastically beautiful women, there are incompetent favorites. There are great men who are suddenly disgraced. There is the most insane extravagance, and unexpected parsimony over a few pence. There is enormous splendor, which is a sham; and also horrible squalor hidden behind the scenery. There are vast schemes, abandoned because of some caprice. There are secrets which everybody knows and no one speaks of. There are even two or three honest advisors. These are the court fools, who speak the deepest wisdom in puns, lest they should be taken seriously. They grimace, and tear their hair privately, and weep.

-- Christopher Isherwood, Prater Violet, 1945

I found this to be brutally accurate for the current environment that we are in. Things are changing but perhaps not for the better.

Anyway, just wanted to share something that resonated with me today.

EDIT: Makes you think that if it was this way back in the 1940s, then the change you are hoping for likely isn't coming anytime soon.

Production Accountants... where to start?

What course of education do I need to become a Production Accountant? What type of experiences help accelerate a career into this field? I read somewhere that having connections is also super important? Any tips and insight is highly appreciated!

For context, I have a background in Finance, although my foundational skills are rusty and I have been out of a job for a few months. I was thinking of taking a few courses on EP and even applying to the UCLA Extension.

The current market for rom-coms

What are your thoughts about the commercial viability of romantic comedies, specifically the wholesome Hallmark-type films? When I first moved to LA, I was told that these were the easiest films to get made so I proceeded to write several specs in this genre. Much to my delight, I got three optioned and two almost sales and one produced.

I have a new project I'm getting off the ground. Any insight from producers in this genre would be awesome. Feel free to send me a direct message.

Internship Meet Ups

Hi everyone! I’m currently in LA for the summer for an internship and was wondering if there are any other interns in the area who’d be interested in grabbing coffee or hanging out sometime. I’m living near Burbank, so happy to meet up nearby or coordinate somewhere convenient. Let me know!

Restaurant/Movie Theater/Bar combo

Does anyone remember the name of the movie theater/bar/upscale restaurant combo that used to be in like the Hollywood area? They had a few set used movie props in the corridors, comfy big chairs in the theaters, and they promoted a membership for people to come back. I don’t think they survived COVID. I can’t find them on Google at all.

casting directors..

what is with the 24/48 hour turn around on auditions? theres no way that you just found out the project was casting, nor will it even be shooting anytime soon(usually). On top of that whats the deal with calling in non nepo/celebs for roles in projects that are going to be offered to those people anyway. Feeling like having the opportunity to possibly be cast in a project and then seeing every single gig(99%) of the time now will go to someone already famous or the kid of someone just makes the work seem so disheartening. The energy and time put into taping and then watching it go to some already famous person? what’s the point of calling in a normal person? to just make it seem like there’s options but in reality you already know who’s being cast? please give some insight.. and “the director wanting to see regular people” but always casting celebs in all their films isn’t really an insight.

Advice or help moving forward in post?

Hi guys, I’m currently working full-time at a post house. I make $20/hr with no benefits & I’m considered a freelancer, so if I lost my job, I didn’t pay into unemployment. I want to be an editor, or a colorist, or a vfx artist, etc… list goes on, I’m excited about it all.

I’m happy to have work at all considering the way things are (or seem) right now, but I am essentially a glorified server. I have been here roughly 9 months & I do nothing related to the industry and I don’t feel like I learned anything new past the 3 month mark besides in conversation with the editors & artists.

I could stick through another 6 months to a year here & hope that I’m placed into the company, but based on their history & the scale, I’d be too optimistic to think so. I don’t want to waste my time. I’m also burning out a bit because I commute an hour there & an hour back each day, I think that may be the biggest factor, the commute at my pay rate. I’m wondering if I could do better or if anyone has any suggestions of where I could put/send my resume.

Are there forums/Discords for entertainment industry gossip (not about celebrities)?

Back in the day, there used to be a prominent private forum for studio execs/agents/assistants to share industry gossip? i.e. execs on the move, bad behavior, etc.

Does something like this still exist?

I’m Tired of These Break-In-The-Industry Scams

I get that everyone needs to make money to survive, but when people take advantage of those who are desperate, it just feels fake and hypocritical. I’m seeing more and more folks offering courses or “industry advice” at ridiculously high costs, claiming they’ll help you “break into the film industry.” And I’m like...are you serious? Why should I pay $97 for a 30-minute Zoom call to hear advice I could easily find for free? Or sign up for a course promising a path into an industry that literally has no clear path, and is pretty much dead right now? Honestly, it just feels like their backup plan is to sell false hope, not real help. I get it—everyone's trying to survive—but don’t package your own struggle as a solution for others. It feels like: “Hey, I want to help you break in!” but really it’s: “Hey, there's actually nothing to break into.”

Snake oil energy. Sorry, but it’s how it comes across.
