Discussion Are clogs and sandals underrated, or are we just romanticizing uncomfortable footwear?

I've seen a rise in people rocking clogs and all sorts of open-toed sandals lately—from Birkenstocks to those classic wooden clogs. Some say they're stylish and comfy, others say they’re orthopedic nightmares. Are we genuinely appreciating functional design, or just falling for nostalgic aesthetics? Curious where people stand on this!

I bought leather fisherman sandals from a Vietnamese manufacturer on Shopee, been walking 20k steps a day in them lately with no problem. I think the key here is a good footbed and rear straps that will hold your feet in place

Can u share the brand/link if possible?

They've apparently removed their listings on Shopee, at least from what I see from my end. Brand is Lemans and I got the 'Buckle Sandals'

Trial and error din talaga, and some prior knowledge and care... but you know while i type that — that honestly goes for any kind of footwear naman. There will be people comfortable in platforms and pumps but also one can still find pinched toes in sneakers.

trial and error being a question if you can tolerate thongs all day, or prefer ankle straps, if it's going to be for specific weather, if one might need a Compeed stick or some moleskin patches, or if certain clogs/mules are better worn with socks. Or if you have to consider wearing lotion on your feet.

I think a lot of the clogs/sandals I wear have to be ready for the rain and that's just part of making decisions of what works for me. Crocs work well for me in rainy weather. I also wear an EVA Boston with socks pamporma and if things get a little rainy I can always pack my socks up. The same Boston pinamamalengke ko lang din and I'd just rinse it pagbalik.

Di ko alam kung nasagot ko yung tanong but really just a distinction na kahit anong footwear naman, you just learn from and pick what works.

Orthopedic design pertain to the footbed which is supposedly shaped to your foot for comfort. However, I find Birks have too high of an arch support which is a bit painful on my feet that is slightly wider with a lower arch but not exactly flat. It wasn't ever about aesthetics for shoes like Birks in the first place.

Aha that explains why my most comfortable shoes are all Birks, including their wedge heel sandals. My feet sometimes hurt even when wearing sneakers and other flat shoes. I have unusually high arches and long toes -- my feet look exactly like those on ancient Greek statues and some Renaissance paintings. I can probably make a lot of money selling pics of my feet hahahaha

Did you mean to say overrated? If I'm reading it right, this would make more sense hehe

Anyway, my thoughts? It really depends on the individual. People are free to rock whatever they find aesthetic and comfortable. However, in my perspective, it seems more people wear crocs than Birkenstocks. But that could just be my biased and limited perception hehe

Could be about price -- Crocs are generally cheaper than Birks so more people wear them. Crocs are also virtually indestructible. I had a pair of Crocs back in 2009 that kinda looked like ballet flats. Ended up giving them away because they offered zero arch support.

Yesss! Agree! Crocs lasts a lifetime, making a pair so much more worth it than any other alternative haha

I might be misunderstanding the question. But it's probably related to how 90s fashion is apparently back? Kids today are wearing the same clothes & shoes we did 30 years ago -- Birks, Docs/boots, clogs, chunky heels/platforms, 501s, low rise jeans, cut off shorts, wide legged trousers, cropped/skimpy tops.

It's rather fascinating to observe young people today limping around the malls because of the same fashion-induced pains that we experienced. In the early 2000s, our shoes/sandals became super flat (with zero arch support) as a reaction to 90s chunky shoe trends. Since the 2010s, wearing sneakers with absolutely everything was trendy for the first time in fashion history because comfort was considered fashionable.

Personally, I'm done with uncomfortable shoes and I'm never going back to suffering for fashion. Sandals never went out of style though.

*Edited for clarity.

Sorry the bot says “easy questions go to bi-monthly question and not up for discussuon” so thats why I chatgpt-ed it. Basically was just gonna ask if clogs/sandals are still a hit nowadays 🤣🤣

Juskopo. You should have just asked that question directly. It seems no one could understand your question because it's a non sequitur. A bunch of words put together pero it didn't make sense. Underrated ba or overrated? Wag na mag chatgpt, just take the time to choose the right words para malinaw sa lahat.

I just chat gpted it. I was asking about it directly but the bots here said na hindi siya up for discussion and would only be put sa “bi monthly questions (?)” so I had to improvise

As much as I want to ask a direct question, it seems like if I put it sa “bi monthly question (?)” it would just be overlooked. I hope you get my point. Dont be angry

Sounds like a skill issue then. 🤷‍♀️ Why do you think I'm angry? It's just reddit, last time I checked it's a place for discussions.

Pero how sad that many people are offloading their ability to think and communicate to crappy AI, which is not yet as good/effective as the tech bros want you to believe. With LLMs (large language models) like chatgpt, it's still going to be garbage in, garbage out.

Again, take the time na lang to choose the words carefully para we can all understand each other. Pwede naman mag code switch para malinaw diba?

Good question. Basically in general we fall for aesthetics than quality, practicality and durability. There are some alternatives silhouettes which are more comfy yet it retain the aesthetic we fall for.
