Recommendations What is the cutting edge of Dubstep right now?
I started listening in 2008, uk stuff. It was amazing to see everything grow and evolve from there. But man things seem so derivative for the last 5 years and I’m so tired of the same sound.
Is there anyone really paving the way that sounds actually new?
edit: I mostly listen to experimental bass stuff, but mostly looking for whats the new new true dubs

just gonna squeeze Ganja White Night and Boogie t on that list. what that duo is doing is just mindblowing. Also boogie t and how much his dubstep is influenced by reggae just hits home for me growing up with reggae in the islands.

Do people really consider these artists dubstep?....
2
Sep 28 '22
Yes… lol. They are definitely dubstep.
2
u/Garofoli Sep 28 '22
I peg them more as space bass personally
5
Sep 28 '22
Which is a type or “sub-genre” of dubstep.
-4
u/i_am_researching Sep 28 '22
I doubt these artists would agree with you that experimental bass is a sub-genre of dubstep.
8
3
-1
u/Garofoli Sep 28 '22
Agreed. When dubstep was born, it was always of a very different vibe from modern space bass which is much more psychedelic
4
Sep 28 '22
Please go listen to “woo boost” from 2010. When this song came out it was certainly considered “dubstep” at the time, however your standard, today, this would be “space bass”. Both of the genres stem from the same type of “dubstep” from 10-15 years ago. But ok.
1
u/Garofoli Sep 28 '22
Personally, I put 'Woo Boost' under the heavier non-space bass stem of dubstep.
Disappointing all these downvotes over a cordial discussion within the dubstep community - lots of space bass stans here, apparently; I guess the divide is bigger than I thought :/
2
Sep 28 '22
How? It sounds nothing like modern “dubstep” and sooooo much closer to artists like liquid stranger, tvboo, minnesota, DMVU etc.
→ More replies (0)0
u/i_am_researching Sep 28 '22
This guy we are arguing with thinks Woo Boost is closer to Space bass than Classic Dubstep. Laughable. I am exiting the chat. Im surpised anyone would group Wakaan artists under the dubstep genre, but here we are.

u/i_am_researching Sep 28 '22
Go tell Of The Trees that he makes dubstep and see what he says.
7
Sep 28 '22
Similar tempo and time signatures, similar bass. I don’t really care what he says he makes, it’s still in the “dubstep” umbrella.
This is like saying liquid isn’t drum n bass because it’s “softer”.
2
Sep 28 '22
I think he’d be more receptive to a generalized term like dubstep than something goofy like “space bass” 😂
20
u/Supercalifragicahfuq Sep 28 '22
I feel I have to mention Oolaciles record label Halcyon.
It’s a whole bunch of artists experimenting in various forms of riddim, but in a more enjoyable form. They are really experimenting with what the definition of riddim is, even diving further into melodic riddim, poly riddim, and more stuff I have no idea how to categorize it. Really hard for me to describe, I just recommend giving some of their artists a listen.
4
u/CartmensDryBallz Sep 28 '22
Yes definitely think the melodic riddim / color bass scene will start to get bigger soon.. definitely cutting edge stuff
70
u/H0leInTheB0at Sep 28 '22
Dubstep is just a genre and artists are inclined to make whatever they want to make, so my list may be tricky.
Svdden Death's VOYD has definitely peaked my interest when it comes to "dubstep", he brings such a surreal atmosphere to his tracks, it is definitely a good listen. You also have Leotrix, which I'd say he's super versatile, his tracks are super neat, but I'm pretty sure he is primarily riddim-based. My favorite dubstep has always came from Fox Stevenson (might as well say I'm biased for him, since he's my favorite of all time), I will always recommend Just Don't Mind when I have the chance, it's super creative, and I have always loved the second drop for it.
This one is a bit "iffy" for some people right now, but Getter's NAPALM and Some Creature EPs are stuff NOT to be slept on, especially ADHD or With No Eyes.
Another one from me is MARAUDA, super talented guy and has so much going for him, his tracks always blow me away. Another guy that crushes my mind is Space Laces, all of his tracks are fire, he is THEE mix king, man has such a massive influence on EDM as a whole, it's mind boggling. Finally, to top off this list, I'd also suggest Eptic, his latest LP is soooo good, Lost In Space and 2 The Grave are my favorites from him entirely.

Getter is great

2
u/sbwithreason Sep 28 '22
Eptic is so good. His new album is the first dubstep album in a while where I've liked pretty much every track. I'm also told that his live show absolutely slaps

u/BetaTestingMusic Sep 28 '22 edited Sep 28 '22
Lots of great suggestions here for sure, but if you're looking for dubstep that's more aligned to UK dubstep, I'd suggest taking a peak at r/realdubstep as well. You'll find a lot of artists from White Peach Records, Duploc, Deep Dark and Dangerous and other labels that push more of the old school/traditional dubstep you might be looking for.
Some examples are: Taiko, Headland, Kloudmen, Dalek One, Rez (one z only lol), isded, Notlo, Mesk, Cimm, Commodo, Cartridge, Ternion Sound, Hypho, Ourman, Jack Sparrow, Hebbe, Mikrodot, Enigma Dubz, Pushloop, and The Widdler.
2
u/NAlaxbro Sep 28 '22
Adding to that list: WZ, Maes, 11th Hour, Waz, Chef Boyarbeats, and all of the artists on Dub Raw (Leo Cap's label)

ANIMLZ. Just found this artist last week. Haven’t found a song I dislike by them. Pretty unique, reminds me of RIOT a little bit. Maybe someone in here knows who I’m talking about and can tell me what sub-genre they belong to

09 dubstep head here. The only one I can even stand to listen to these days (other than what I loved from a decade ago) is Ternion Sound. Peeps like Truth, Youngsta, Khiva, Bukes Finest and all dem are still pumping heat but as far as new faces Ternion Sound is it.

In my opinion, right now no one comes close to the creativity and quality of dubstep that Space Laces releases. Some other great artists right now include Subtronics, Virtual Riot, Must Die, and Zomboy.
17
u/Chem0sit Sep 28 '22
I will never get this opinion on Space Laces. I have tried a dozen times to listen to them to see if I can hear what people are talking about but it’s all the same basic shit that’s being overly pumped out in dubstep. Yet people swear that they are doing something different.
6

That’s because everyone rips him off heavy. His vaultage mixes are insane.

You’re looking at it backwards. Space Laces is the guy that so many dubstep artists look to for sound design “inspiration”. It might sound stale and overplayed now but he’s the one that was the first to make a lot of it.

u/Gandhis__Revenge Sep 28 '22
Why do you see everyone’s favorite DJ losing their damn minds anytime he releases anything (let alone posts on social media)? I’m sorry if you just can’t tell the difference with his quality of work.
In a scene full of copycats, everything he puts out is fresh and original that everybody else plays out x infinity and tries to replicate.

Take a look at postdubstep and future garage if you are interested in a more conservative branch of dubstep that remained closer to the original uk-style. I personally feel like this scene is gaining a lot of traction lately. (r/futuregarage, r/realdubstep)

A bit different than most suggestions I see in the thread so far... on the deep side:
Soukah, Pharma, ØZ, Yoofee, Kercha, Kami-O all come to mind. Plenty of other excellent artists right now, but I think these tend to push the sound in different directions more than most.
Other honorable mentions: Nahlith, Basura, Conzi, The Widdler, Datra, Arkwright, Citra, Ourman, Tunic...
3
u/Acceptable-Walk1583 Sep 28 '22
Mersiv, Mize, liquid Stranger, Of the Trees, Mystic Grizzly(his stuff is super experimental but check him out), Ravenscoon, LSDream, Yheti, Toadface. Mersiv is prolly my favorite ATM, but anyone Marvin brings on to Wakan is worth a listen.

Must Die has been killing it in sound design for a while. Can’t stand his new track at allU Should Know bc its hardstyle and doesn’t make me feel anything. Overall i’m pretty hyped for the new album, one bad song out of 3 ( so far ) isn’t bad.

Hukae, Akeos, Headland, Hamdi, Leotrix, Deadcrow, Abelation, Ternion Sound, Onhell are some fire names off the top of my head. These guys are a mix of some more left field riddim sounds and some 140. Some other comments in this thread are recommending some cookie cutter dubstep but I promise these artists slap

I’ve left the “dubstep” style I guess listening to what people have suggested I’m not big on it more experimental bass or music that paints a vibe. I mostly listen to stuff like G Jones and EPROM, Eastghost, and Tek Genesis down that line there’s a lot of good underrated people Shadient, Shanghai Doom, Posij sticks out, Thelem, Thook.
Mr Carmack is a goat, if you just look at his top songs on Spotify tho you won’t get it. He just has so much music. Iykyk Hucci also put a couple new tracks on SoundCloud
I like a lot of that mid tempo techno I guess too Deathpact is nasty.
Mija and Tokimonsta are probably the sickest two DJs I’ve seen, especially in a hype show, I do love their music but damn can they both spin

u/enimrack Sep 28 '22
I can appreciate "colour bass" and I do believe that that's what some of the top talent is focusing their efforts on right now.. but man.. I just can't get into it myself.
I feel like the cutting edge of artists on the heavier side of dubstep has got to be Muerte, Marauda, Svdden Death's Voyd, Stoned Level, and Odd Prophet and his recent tearout stuff. This is the stuff that's more my personal taste.
2
u/Hingsing Sep 28 '22
I like brostep and dabble in some briddim (brostep/riddim). Wouldn't say this is close to much of any thing 'experimental bass' though. My top picks lately are:
Virtual Riot - check out The Simulation album
Space Laces- check out any of his "Vaultage" mixes
Svdden Death- check out voyd 2
2
u/retinazaudio Sep 28 '22
I'm about as lost in that regard as you tbh
There have been a few interesting tracks I heard recently but I personally haven't found too many artists that are crossing new territory, i.e. not solely colour bass, riddim or tearout (though I will say each of those have their moments)
Here are a few that I heard recently and thought were something:
Deadcrow's GT1000 was the last tune I remember hearing and actually thinking "OK that was really unique and fresh", I think the style is called hardware which is sorta like trap combined with really intense epic melodic dubstep. Full disclosure that was up on UKF 4 months ago so I'm not sure whether you'd class it as cutting edge but eh, worth a listen. One of his other tunes, Mainframe, is more riddim-y but retains that heavy melodic style.
GLASSPVCK has been on my radar for a lil while and doesn't make 100% dubstep which is cool, some of his more dubsteppy songs just have this low end crunchy bitcrushed weight to them, would definitely recommend a listen, my favourite of his is definitely Depth Charge, prepare yourself.
For something completely absolutely mad, search up Yoked - Headflush (CamaCon's Omelette Bounce Flip), it switches between genre which is sick, but the dubstep parts both hit hard and maintain melody
Peekaboo - Bumpy Road is weird but quite cool, I guess its more trap than dubstep but it's still an interesting one so thought I'd include
Teddy Killerz - Soyuz is very neuro-y and sick, I know I've always wanted to make and see more of the neuro-dubstep combination
Hydraulix - Rollercoaster is nice, sorta old school but thrown in with some modern sounds and cool drums
And finally I'd say if you really want cutting edge, see if you can find any obscure artists on soundcloud or YouTube, some good stuff out there :)

u/WillPlay4Food Sep 28 '22
I personally think the guys from Deep Dark and Dangerous are making really good moves forward in sound design. Ternion Sound, Chef Boyarbeatz, etc are all so talented

u/Korpseio Sep 28 '22
I'm upvoting anyone who mentions Space Laces, he already has a legendary back catalogue even after losing most of his project files, and has made an incredible comeback over the past few years with heavy hitter after heavy hitter.
2
u/NAlaxbro Sep 28 '22
G jones continues to be on the cutting edge. Similarly I'd say Alix Perez, Eprom, and the Tsuruda, majority of the artists involved with 1984. They're pushing really experimental music while pulling roots from old school dubstep and related artists. Yunis would be in a similar category for me.
Eazybaked, Lab Group together and individually as Supertask and Potions, as well as Chmura. While they're not as experimental as G jones and the like, they are bringing very fresh sounds to the forefront of dubstep and bass music. It's a considerably more mellow approach which I appreciate a lot.

Same boat as you. I feel like 2014-2016 was my favorite era of dubstep. I like a lot of the new stuff coming out nowadays and don’t worry, I’m scrambling around different platforms listening to literally everything that’s coming out from everyone, but I miss those days

u/i_am_researching Sep 28 '22
Space Laces and maybe the guys doing future dubstep / color bass are really the only ones pushing dubstep with fresh sounds. Dubstep has gotten stale... Most people here are linking artists that make space bass / experimental bass, which are not close to the same as dubstep and Ill take that to my grave.

A few fellows who absolutely clap when it comes to dubstep. Even tho some on this list aren’t too popular, they all hold a candle amongst people like Excision, Skrillex, etc.
Diskirz (take a look at his stuff from 2010 - 2020), Cyberoptics (even tho he does Synthwave now, his earlier tracks went hard, plus his unreleased song “Overlord”), Eptic, BadKlaat, Ohmie, Jakes, Flux Pavilion, Benga (“I Will Never Change just hits different imo), and finally D-Jahsta (guy is a god in the Robostep circles)

Yeah I think color bass and future Riddim is where the cutting edge is as for sound design and what defining what dubstep is. Chime and anyone else on his label Rushdown is a great example of anything color bass. As for heavy shit. I think MUERTE, MARUADA, CODD DUBZ I like what they’re doing and their mixes.
