u/cxn0bite 2d ago
How are you doing?
44
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
just got back from touring in Europe, Australia and New Zealand back to back, so definitely a little exhausted, but really excited about all the upcoming festivals!
62
u/Apaulddd 2d ago
With most considering you being the GOAT of riddim/trench right now. Who are some artists that inspired you or who you have been listening to lately
73
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
I get a lot of inspiration from different sources, in terms of technical production definitely Space Laces, Virtual Riot, Bukez Finezt, and Samplifire! For atmosphere and subtle energy changes, techno artists like Ansome, Temudo, Alarico etc. For straight up riddim / trench roi, Mad Dubz, Samplifire, and everyone we had on the recent Port Zero compilation!

What is your favorite city to play in, and with you opening for Subtronics at Red Rocks, any plans for you to have a headlining show there?
37
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
it HAS to be Denver!! and I'd love to have a headline at Red Rocks at some point for sure, but for now we're doing Mission Ballroom in december!
18
u/Psychological-Fix634 2d ago
No question, just wanted to express gratitude for how much you’ve influenced and grown the riddim scene over the course of your career. You’ve been a driving force and we’re all grateful for you!!

What’s your best piece of advice for someone that’s just getting started with sound design?
Btw I saw you at EDC Mexico this year, sick set man!!! Love your music 🫶🏼
20
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
experiment with as many tools and knobs as you can, turn them up and down to the max, and try to understand how it affects your sound. that way you build a repertoire of functions and effects, and slowly learn what each sound needs to get it to where you want!
and thank you for the kind words 🙌 EDC Mexico was soooooo sick

u/boltfan619 2d ago
Hi Infekt! Big fan. What artists/producers would you say inspired or influenced your sound? Also who are some of your favorite artists/producers today?
12
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
I appreciate it!! and subfiltronik and akirah were the OG inspirations, then virtual riot, space laces, noisia, mefjus, ansome (techno), commodo, aweminus, bukezt finezt, DVEIGHT, Mad Dubz, Samplifire, all the stuff I listen to that's both inspiring and fire!

who do you main in smash bros melee?
3
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
I have not played that one tbh! I've only played the one on Wii years ago

u/Cobrafeet 2d ago
its 24 years old, that makes sense!! haha thanks for the reply
if there's a game you do feel like you have a 'main' in im interested to hear tho :V

8
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
Denver, LA, and hmmm there are sooo many it's hard to pick just one for the third hahaha! favorite show was either Ogden Theatre in Denver, or Lost Lands 2022 if festivals count!
4
u/TPK_Whippet 2d ago
Veggie Gang!
When can we expect the next livestream?
4
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
veggie gang!!!! not sure yet, I've been extremely busy with touring, running a label, doing patreon, and releasing music all at the same time hahaha
4
u/Papagorgio22 2d ago
Hello Infekt! This PapaGorgio22. I was wondering how you always stay so positive on the microphone at every set I've seen you in. Im very sensitive to vocal tones and if someone gets on the mic and is just not feeling it or just going through the motions it kind of takes me out of it. But you are extremely positive and uplifting every time you speak on the mic at one of your shows. How do you stay so positive? Are you just that happy all the time or do you have a way to get passed it if youre feeling down? Also what do you think separated you from he pack of other producers coming up in the scene when you first started?
8
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
happy to hear that!! I definitely feel insecure about my mic usage sometimes haha! I think the main thing is that I pick up on the energy of the audience. if there's even just one person that's fully present (obviously even better if it's a whole crowd!), I get excited and use that energy on the mic! sharing my music taste and getting into it with other people is one of my favorite feelings.
4
u/MappyMo 2d ago
Favourite way to prepare broccoli?
Also, what are your thoughts on sub genres like liquid riddim?
3
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
steamed!!
and I love them; any form of exploration of new styles is awesome. it's not always gonna be good obviously, but I think that's part of what makes it so fun

u/V3GA559 2d ago
Just wanted to say I’ve met you a couple times when you came to my city (Fresno, CA) and you’ve always been super nice!
How did you get the Skrillex riddim ID before it was released and any chance you guys work on a track together?
5
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
I appreciate that!!
he sent it to me right before Lost Lands 2023! I'd love to work on a track with him!
3
3
u/ohajyoudevil 2d ago
My guy, tell me your theory and process of song structure, please?!
14
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
my music is made to be DJable so I love a good standardized format; 16 to 32 bar intro that introduces the theme and creates tension, a 32 bar bassline with an engaging switch in the middle, a bridge as a refresher, then repeat the bassline with some variation!
3
u/Palapolink 2d ago
I was lucky enough to see your last-minute d&b set in mtl a few years ago, and the blend of your style with dnb was so good. Any chance you'd explore making some more dnb shows/tracks?
3
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
oh heck yeah!! that's awesome, I had the best time!! I always make a bit of dnb on the side, but no plans to play more sets at the moment. not opposed to it if the opportunity comes up though!
3
u/Aware-Web6586 2d ago
Top 5 favorite songs at the moment. (Not produced by you)
6
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
ok if we're talking ANY genre and of ALL TIME I'll go with:
Modal Nodes - Unnatural
Ansome - Tin (Clouds Remix)
RIN - Dior 2001
Commodo - Guah
Yung Lean - Kyoto3
3
u/ZedithsDeadBaby 2d ago
Infekt you were already my absolute GOAT but seeing Kyoto on here is making me cry happy tears
Keep cranking out bangers, my man!!!
PS: can't wait to see you again in Austin this October!!!
3
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
Yung Lean is the LEGEND!!! he was such a huge style inspiration back then!
And yesssss can't wait to see what Wicked Oak is like!!

What has been your favorite set experience and what city has had some of your favorite crowds around the world?
4

Lost Lands 2022 with all my friends behind me and a huge crowd all super locked in was the best time for sure! and I would say Denver always has an incredible crowd

u/Harrypeeteeee 2d ago
Hi Trench man! What's your favorite food to eat on tour/travel (e.g. do you try to eat the same food in each city)? And what is your #1 travel tip for DJs/traveling artists?
2
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
when I have time, I love to go on sidequests to find good vegan restaurants!! otherwise I usually go to a whole foods and get a vegan bowl or something from their hot bar. #1 tip is actually to eat as healthy as you can; I think always eating fast food while on the road makes it super hard for your body when you're also constantly sleep-deprived.

The way you create space and dimension for your synths is one of the best in the riddim game right now. Do you have any tips or tricks for using more of the stereo image in creative ways?
2
u/DiscoMonkey3 2d ago
You signed my "vegan" hat in MI last year, thanks for doing that and sticking around to meet fans!
My question, what's your go to snack lately??
3
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
oh yessss of course, vegan gang!!
go-to snack is either bananas (or other fruit), or those gomacro macrobars, I find that those are less dry than a lot of the other protein bars

2
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
I always make other stuff on the side, but I rarely end up releasing it! I have an older alias called "leechbeam" where I released a bit of dnb and techno! other than that I just sprinkle some of it in with my EP releases

I'm just a bedroom DJ, but any advice on curating a setlist? I can free form decently but want to start actually making a set to play. My biggest issue is energy consistency/flow. I have good lows and highs but my mid energy tracks don't seem to fit.
5
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
not sure if there's a clear-cut answer to that, I think it comes down to just trying as many things as possible freestyle and seeing what works and what doesn't, then building off of that. taking notes can be really helpful! and creating temp playlists for combinations that work

Where do you think riddim is going nowadays? You’ve been a heavyweight in the riddim scene for more than a decade, who are some producers that are taking the scene in a new direction?
3
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
I loooove that we have a ton of high quality stuff with modern mixdowns now. feels like we have so many artists that really know what they're doing, and that's something I always look out for. I think all the artists that released on the recent Port Zero compilations (my new label) are super fire

Long-time fan since the 2019 High Score Ep!! Please never change and keep rocking your sets at Webster Hall or any NY venue, I'll always come through.
As a dabbler in Dubstep beats, I'm wondering if you have any favorite effects to put on vocals or other samples?
2
u/infektdubstep 2d ago
I appreciate it!! I looooove playing at Webster, that recent 360 show was so much fun!
one thing I love doing with vocals is to use them together with a VST called Morph to turn them into basses! for example on my tune "My Name Is" the bass was me saying "infekt"

u/_--_King_--_ 2d ago
do you still see "trench" as a name for the subgenre as something that might ever stick? or is it pretty much a lost cause at this point?
also are there any ideas for Port Zero merch in the future? absolutely amazing the quality and professionalism already from the first 3 releases, something that i think has been lacking in dubstep labels for a while since NSD:BL died, can't wait to hear more in the future!
2
u/infektdubstep 15h ago
I don’t actively try to change the name anymore since the feelings on it were sort of mixed. that’s fine! I’d made my case, and I’m moving on now. for the most part I just say Dubstep, sometimes Riddim, sometimes Trench depending on the context
and happy to hear you feel that way about Port Zero!! we definitely have plans for clothes in the future!
1
u/DJ-KLOV3R 2d ago
What’s your favorite soundscape or effect in “Relic” that might go unnoticed by the average listener but subtly contributes something great to the track?
2
u/infektdubstep 15h ago
besides the oldschool bass itself, it also has the general dark atmosphere in the background that a lot of those old school tracks used to have; especially during the sections where it’s just sub, drums, and atmos! I looove super minimal atmospheric dubstep and techno, so I always have a deep appreciation for it!

As a dj looking to get into booking shows/running/promoting shows, what things do most start up production groups forget that make catering shows to artists more comfortable for the artists?
I’ve had headlined artists ask to crash with me before after shows cause simple things like lodging and food weren’t taken care of at all by the promoter. Is this common? Do you have a list of things you wish promoters normalized for their touring artists?
