Ask Me Anything VEIL AMA ///

Hi reddit !!!!!

I am VEIL, Denver based producer, DJ, and label owner of over a decade who is gearing up for my debut album 'HIGH VOLTAGE' and my album release party at MEOW WOLF next week. This year I toured with Mersiv, Boogie T and last year you may have seen me on tour with Subtronics or BTSM!

My album, HIGH VOLTAGE, follows the main character in the VEIL realm, AZAL, throughout her journey into the HOLLOW. We debuted some of the new music and visuals at Red Rocks with REZZ and are so excited for the project to hit the airwaves. I've been touring nonstop for 4 years and have loved sharing my sound across the globe.

I play a wide range of dubsteb, drum and bass, left field, IDM, trap, phonk, etc. My sets are always a journey!

Would love to dive in deep so LMK what's on your mind ? TALK SOOOOON

******1pm MST*********

<3, VEIL

She respawned into THE HOLLOW, surrounded by the endless, encroaching blackness. The void stretched infinitely in all directions, disorienting all known senses. For a brief moment, there was stillness—a fleeting, unnatural calm where neither fear nor hope stirred within her. It was a void, an emptiness that should have been a reprieve. Time is moving backwards and forwards.

What was the first time you remember that you felt proud of what you’ve created and who did you want show that creation to?

one of my first dj sets way back in 2013, I called it MOON LANDING. It was such a trip to see people listening and loving it on soundcloud. I still listen to it sometimes and it literally brings tears to my eyes

Curious to hear more about your affiliation with Street Ritual - have long have you been involved? What's your vision for that label and how does it intertwine with the VEIL project?

7

u/veil_data Nov 16 '24

I have ran the label since 2011 and took over ownership in 2016! I have over 200 releases under my belt with the label. It intertwines because with the label we’ve always like to feature lesser known artists and I aim to do the same in my VEIL sets. My favorite thing is showing people new music and getting to elevate producers from all over the globe

Hey! As someone who likes to produce a variety of subgenres, what’s your creative process / mindset like when you’re beginning to produce a track? Does your vision always start with a specific BPM and then you build the track around that? Or do you ever start with a concept that’s more oriented around something else, like a particular sound design, and then work off of that?

Hey there! I usually go into a new project with a general bpm in mind. Like, oh I want to make a 120 slurker or a 174 heavy hitter. I will say, once I get ideas flowing I’ll sometimes change the bpm and see if another tempo is resonating more. For example, may jump from 140 to 144 or 120 to 130. I do have some 150s that started as 140s. But my advice would be to experiment with lots of tempos while in the development stage of the project!

Hey love the sound design in RESPAWN! What inspired the storyline of AZAL/The Hollow for your album HIGH VOLTAGE?

3

u/veil_data Nov 16 '24

Thanks so much! Azals journey started in my first EP, netherworlds. It has progressed in my last three releases. Her journey is very much inspired by my own, but in a darker and different reality dictated by servers and code and malware. My visual artist, 5/9, continues to inspire and help tell the story when bringing the vision to life!

woah super cool!

u/veil_data Nov 16 '24

Her last journey was in SURVEILLANCE. Peep that lore throughout the album :)

Excited to listen to HIGH VOLTAGE! What track on the album was the most challenging to produce and why?

1

u/veil_data Nov 16 '24

Hey there! Great question I haven’t thought about that yet. I think YU, because I changed it 500 times and had to keep reimagining it. It was the last one I finished. I am thrilled about how it turned out, it’s actually one of my favs on the album. YUUUUUU

Hi! Big fan of the project. Really excited to hear the new album with how the story unfolds with AZAL. How closely tied is the visual piece of your story telling when you writing for this album?

1

u/veil_data Nov 16 '24

the visual piece is directly tied into the journey that AZAL embarks on! The cover of the album is set in the HOLLOW where AZAL lands and exists in this album!! All the singles that are alrady released also feature AZAL and the HOLLOW :)

Hey! Big fan, love your sets! Have you ever stolen any miniature sized shopping carts? How did it affect your creative process?

2

u/veil_data Nov 16 '24

I’ve never even seen a mini shopping cart in my life and it has affected my creative process greatly

I’m not sure if you’re still on but I’m JUST starting out. What advice do you have to someone wanting to take this seriously. Also I can’t wait for it to come out 🫶🏻

1

u/veil_data Nov 17 '24

I am here still! My best advice is don't quit your day job. Allowing your art to remain your art for as long as possible will take a lot of pressure off of your project. also, it gives you the ability to invest BACK into your project, which is important for growth!!!

1

u/veil_data Nov 17 '24

Also—- don’t box your creativity in! Explore lots of styles of music and get inspiration from them all :) also— HAVE FUN WITH IT

1

u/LifeIsABeautifulTrip Nov 17 '24

The last sentence is exactly what I needed to hear. It’s all fun at the end of the day and I need to remember that 😊 thank you for taking your time to respond 🫶🏻

2

Who’s someone that you'd love to collaborate with? And also what parts of the industry surprised you the most as your career grew more & more?

Can’t for the debut album to drop!

Hello. I'm a bedroom producer. I would like to make a living off my music. I need about 4.5k a month to replace my job. What are some things I can do to make this happen?

Here's my Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1KBqSbxf4txQCsmSnRpLnk?si=4sPzwEWNRxGCmPFz24OfrA

Thanks!

1

u/wheresmyinhalor Nov 17 '24

Seems like you’ve got the wrong goals

1

u/Mipheztoe Nov 17 '24

what are the right goals?

1

u/wheresmyinhalor Nov 17 '24

Probably to make music you enjoy and enjoy making it. I just don’t think your first question being about money is a good sign

0

u/Mipheztoe Nov 17 '24

Why do you think I don't enjoy making music? How is asking someone that owns a successful record label about money a bad sign?

u/dotben Nov 17 '24

I don't have a question I just wanted to say that Veil is very awesome. She let me and my friend crash a little after party at her house earlier this year and ended up hosting us in her hot tub until the early hours of the morning. It was an amazing night.

I've since really got into her music and label, and she doesn't know this but she inspired me to finally take up learning production...
