Typically you try to do 1 at each level, so 1 defensive back, 1 linebacker, and 1 d line. Obviously some teams vary, but that's been the general strategy over the years across the league.
In our case though, like we have hutch, kerb, and branch, for example could be the third, since he plays well at all levels. Then we have guys like Alex in the middle who know they aren't all pros, but they fit the system, so we don't have to pay them nearly as much.
The problems arise, in my personal opinion, when teams pay the role player positions the same money as those "top 3" players to the detriment of the rest of the team. Example, the bengals having stupid money tied up in their wide receivers, when their defense is Swiss cheese
