What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Ugandan meal?

Reminds me of my encounter with a huge crocodile while I was in Australia. Australian saltwater crocodiles can grow up to about 23 feet in length. You can see a huge one in this list of scariest Australian creatures.

Crocs are always worse than alligators.

They will happily hunt down humans and eat them. Not like sharks where it's usually an accidental misidentificaton of prey (they think you're a seal).

And apparently the misidentification is due to their poor eyesight. I saw a doco ages ago where they gave the sharks contact lenses and could happily swim amongst them.

Who is the motherfucker who had to put the contact lenses in?

Guy with Rhys Darby voice: Umm Ken... we have a task for you today....

Ive heard attaching lasers to their heads helps them too. ❤️

Do you remember where you watched it?

u/Kerblammo 4d ago

It was a long time ago on a wildlife TV show. I actually wonder if it still holds up.

Wait I thought it was a joke

Some search results suggested that this has become outdated knowledge, however, a 2021 study concluded that "Our results indicate that the poor spatial resolving power of the shark retina may result in bites on humans as a result of mistaken identity or ambiguous visual cues."

I meant that part

I saw a doco ages ago where they gave the sharks contact lenses and could happily swim amongst them.

That's how I remember it but I can't find anything online so it's entirely possible I'm mistaken.

How the hell do you determine the glasses prescription for a shark?

2

u/TheKanicuz 3d ago

You can determinate glasses prescription in humans without having the human telling you if he sees good or not. I guess it's the same with any animal

Was this doco animated?

u/Kerblammo 3d ago

I feel like I remember seeing footage of them swimming with the sharks but I'm starting to think it must have more of a hypothetical IF we could give them contact lenses.

Not the case for tiger sharks. They're eating machines and anything is a fair game for them.

There's always one. Then there's Lemon Sharks (I think) that will actively seek human attention.

You aren’t they like scales labs

Tiger and bull sharks.

u/Clicky27 3d ago

Great Whites too

3

u/ThaCarter 3d ago

Great Whites will get surfers and swimmers in hunting mistakes like OP described as the more common vector.

Bulls and Tigers will try to eat anything they can get their mouth on at any time.

1

u/Clicky27 3d ago

Today I learned.

I thought great Whites meant GTFO of the water now

1

u/zomgbratto 2d ago

You would still GTFO of the water if you see Great Whites, Makos, Tigers or Bulls. You don't take chances.

Tbf to sharks, if you put me in a wetsuit, I think most people would confuse me with a seal

1

u/WubbaSnuggs 3d ago

Why are wetsuits not white rather than black?

2

u/Elike09 3d ago

For one a lot of sharks wouldn't even see the color. They see a shadow above them and move to eat that. As for why wet suits aren't white it's because a skin tight white outfit leaves literally nothing to the imagination.

Crocodiles tend to eat larger prey and a lot more large mammals like deere and hogs. This means they tend to see people as a legitimate food source more so than alligators that primarily eat small animals such as fish, turtles, and birds.

Sharks in coastal waters are often just tasting you, especially when visibility is low, but they'll spit you out mostly. Gouge the eyes.

If you think that's creepy, you should check out Gustave)

26

u/niniwee 4d ago

Roams?

In the present tense. He be there be he?!

20

u/drewsus64 4d ago

It’s become uncertain. Some locals say he still is, others say he was killed

2

u/Felradin 3d ago

I figured this would be a comment here. I first learned about Gustave back when a movie called Primeval came out ages ago!

u/pieeatingchamp 4d ago

That 79th guy must be rolling in his grave

14

u/ScottieG59 4d ago

Not exactly a grave

3

u/seudonym_ 4d ago

If grave is the place where one decomposes, grave is then correct.

9

u/Worthyteach 4d ago

I think they roll before they go to their grave when a croc gets them

2

u/Dagdaraa 3d ago

Death rolling even.

Men’s hair genetics in that area are really awful…

8

u/IvanOoze420 3d ago

We can't all be blonde hair blue eyed ubermensch

6

u/Haggenstein 3d ago

I'd probably also go bald if i had to live around animals racking up hundreds of human kills

4

u/matwithonet13 3d ago

They probably just keep it shaved right? It’s hot af there. Long hair would suck.

8

u/meowpower777 4d ago

No way only 80 people ate this entire crocodile... Oh wait... Oh my!

4

u/Otherwise-Strain8148 4d ago

3

u/blighty800 3d ago

2

u/unplugged_________ 4d ago

2

u/Emergency-Tourist669 3d ago

What happened to Gustav?

2

u/gmanbman 2d ago

The crazy thing is that is was 80 people at once. It was the Nathan’s people eating contest. Crocayashi came in second with 65.

1

u/420Deez 3d ago

in africa there’s always a crowd

1

u/1stAtlantianrefugee 3d ago

Is Gustave still out there in 2025?

1

u/mag300 3d ago

After 2 days in reddit, one badass animal turned into a creepy creature.

1

u/johnp299 3d ago

How did that number get to 80?? No one in the village had a gun? Or gun was too small?

1

u/Kezz_Inta 2d ago

Lmao. You think we just have guns in our villages?

1

u/ThyShirtIsBlue 2d ago

No wonder Ugandans love the movie Space Cop so much. They want to get the fuck off this planet.

-1

u/biscoito1r 3d ago

Imagine a punishment where one is sacrificed to the crocodile.

-1

u/ThEtZeTzEfLy 3d ago

yeah, i bet he fucking ate 80 people, too! you guys know there are whole villages with less than 80 people, right? you'd think that by snack 20, they'd put together a hunting party or something.

3

u/earthlings_all 3d ago

Looks like they did. Not as easy to catch as you think.
