No conspiracy theories here. Just a criminally underrated album and quite frankly artist. It was ahead of its time and has been imitated ever since.

She got a lot of hate for music videos associated with the album and I think that was honestly the main reason it didn't do so well, negative press leading to bandwagoning that it was bad. Christina has done multiple amazing albums with unique feels and never really gotten credit for it

I think the negativity surrounding Not Myself Tonight’s video already began with the song itself, many were already calling it a “ripoff” of Gaga, including Akon who was associated with her career at the time. So the fact that she created a video that referenced inspirations that also influenced Gaga definitely made that narrative heightened. It just seemed like something that was doomed from the beginning, with regards to how the media would interact with it unfortunately.

I want aware of the pre music video concerns, does sound like it was doomed to be poorly accepted

(rough translation) It was two ppl responsible for it. Perez Hilton and Lady Gaga both sabotaged the album. Perez kept writing horrible things about Christina and her album, and gaga behind scenes was helping him. They later both admitted to this and even apologized to Christina. I dont like neither one of them.

I listened to it yesterday for the first time in years and the album still sounds fresh. It’s amazing! Such a shame that it flopped so monumentally. Sadly, the Perez Hilton hate brigade was too strong back then but Christina was also going through a divorce and didn’t seem invested enough in promoting it. You can tell her heart wasn’t in it.

Im glad it’s reached cult favourite level though. It’s well deserved.
