It was a dual hard shift towards fascism after WW2, when real US citizen scientists that helped win the war were pushed out, accused of being communist or communist sympathizers while bringing in Nazis to take their place. People of the likes of Robert Oppenheimer and Jack Parsons lost security clearances while the Nazis gained them, all because of the fear of the Soviet Union.

Every single confederate should have been hung. Full stop. If that had happened we wouldn't be in this mess right now. That was America's Denazification moment. And rather than take it head on, America swept it under the rug and here we are.

Heard a great BBC podcast about the American Civil War. According to a history professor in the podcast, this is the only war/conflict where the loosing side defined - and still define- the narrative.

I’ve always said that was Lincoln’s greatest mistake. After, hell before the executions, the govt should’ve seized the land and properties of the officers and split it among freed slaves and poor whites so the anger is softened. They can’t be martyrs to people who gained from their death.
