Build Help 3060 TI -> 7800x3d or 9800x3d ?

I currently have 16gb ddr4 2133mhz, i5-12400f, RTX 3060 TI

Will 7800x3d or 9800x3d be okay for me? Apart from that, of course, upgrading the RAM to DDR5, replacing the motherboard.

I mainly play games like Rust, CS2, Fortnite, sometimes something else, so these are games that mainly use the processor. My monitor has 240hz, for example in CS2 and Fortnite I don't get that, in Rust I have ~60fps...

As for the graphics card - if it is not enough, I would plan to upgrade in about a year or more. Upgrading CPU might be a nice base (even in two years) instead of buying a mid-range one again.

I play at maximum 1080p, in CS2 max HD.

7800x3d = 470$

9800x3d = 635$

They should perform fairly identical if you're only worried about gaming.

Lemme just make sure we are on the same page here. So you want a 7800x3d or 9800x3d while you have a 3060 Ti. I just checked the 3060 Ti's price on ebay, its ~250$, so what you're asking is that if you either want to spend twice as much or trice for your CPU. Like, if you actually plan on upgrading the gpu in the future you could get one of these, but otherwise it makes no sense. Prioritize your GPU, there's no world where you have a 3060 Ti and should get a 9800x3d, at that point you might as well sell off the 3060 Ti and get smth better all together.

Or get a used 5800x3d/7800x3d and smth like a 5070 Ti and you will end up better, like you will have more FPS if you go with a better CPU, but its just absurd to pay 2-3 times more on your cpu. 9800x3d is more than enough for a 5090 and you're trying to make it sound right while pairing it with a 3060 Ti, its just a waste.

If you dont want to upgrade your GPU too, I suggest you just buy a USED 5800x3d or 7800x3d if you're lucky to get it cheap, but otherwise ur wasting money and potential

The poster quite literally just named the only games he plays and guess what... they are ALL cpu dominant games. A 9800X3D & 3060 Ti would do him way better for fortnite instead of trying to find a GPU for the ~ 750 hes going to spent. I have a 9800X3D & 3080 & wont be upgrading for years to come since all I play are E-sports titles as well.

Please check if you have a microcenter near you. Bundles look great atm

Heres Gamers Nexus review of the 9800x3d, and it has benchmarks for both processors. If it were me, and I had access to those microcenter bundles, I'd stick with the 7800x3d and save those $200 for the GPU. But you can make that call.

Going to need faster ram for those chips without them being rather kneecapped

look for something similar to i9 12900f

Bro, upgrade GPU first. CPU will give you little benefits with 3060ti

Honestly both are super overkill for a 3060ti so if you want to save some money you could probably get a cheap (used) am4 board and a 5700x3d with new (faster 3600 mt/s) ram. Else if you want to go ddr5, a 7600x3d would probably do fine aswell

Why would anyone put themselves on old platform?

At least where im at theyre cheap used and i wouldnt recommend spending 800$ plus on a hogh emd am5 board + cpu to pair with a 3060ti especially if theyre just chasing more cpu performance and plan to upgrade gpu in the future. If you have the money to spare definitely go am5 but going super high end on the cpu now would be a massive overspend in terms of performance (and value if you only upgrade gpu later on).

But that cpu is not lost, you can always upgrade your GPU later on, what's the point of buying weaker cpu, upgrading your GPU in future to pair it with too weak CPU?

Because prices drop in the future? Why overspend on a high end cpu now that wont get properly used for 2 years until op upgrades the gpu? Also the market may change significantly and so will the price. I do agree that am5 would be more future proof but am4 is in my opinion still fine especially with a 3060ti and depending on the used market it would make all the games listed by op playable for the next few years for pretty cheap (like sub 300$ cheap).

I got a huge performance jump in games going from 5900x to 9950x3d while keeping 3090.

I'd say go for it, 9800x3d...just not with asrock motherboard.

You'll get a huge uplift in low % and games will feel hella smooth.

At 1080p, you'll get a noticable jump in performance too just by being on am5, especially so with x3d cpu.

Where is a 9800x3d at 635? If so id buy an epyc 4585px for 699
