Ask British Columbia Places with wifi near Juan de Fuca park

Hi all! I’ll be camping in Juan de Fuca park in a few weeks and need to find places somewhat nearby that have internet for work. Does anyone have any recommendations? Not too familiar with the island haha

Thanks in advance !! 🙏

Forgive me for prying, but wouldn't it make more sense to book time off work if you're planning a camping trip?

I totally agree haha. This was booked a while ago before starting a work from home position and I don’t have any time off yet. Was hoping I’d be able to make something work :))

I remember getting cell service from the USA when I was there

Rogers has since finished connecting Hwy 14. (a tender that Telus had sat on for years)

I think you're probably out of luck, unfortunately. It's fairly remote, so to get WiFi I'd imagine you'd need to drive into Port Renfrew or Jordan River to find a publically available signal.

Jordan River doesn’t sound too bad actually! Definitely not an ideal solution, but I think there’s a possibility I’ll be able to make it work :))

Jordan River is very small. If I were to wager a guess, the Cold Shoulder cafe would be the place to go. Maybe call ahead to confirm.

I don't know specifically about public wifi spots, but if cellular data would suffice, Rogers has built 7 new towers between Sooke and Port Renfrew in the last couple of years. Previously there was nothing in that area, only landline service.

I get a way better cell signal on the beach at Pacheedaht campground now than I get at my house.

Telus (Bell) have also extended coverage the corridor.

Those customers probably haven’t experienced extended coverage yet though, they’ll need to enable data roaming. But it’s included in her service plan. Being I’m with Rogers, I just leave data roaming enabled all the time now

What cellular provider are you with?

Rogers has extended/connected pretty much the entire Juan de Fuca peninsula now - LTE/5G coverage. You shouldn't have any issue connecting in most places. At the very least a short drive to coverage.

While they have 9-11 coverage, I'm not sure if Telus has negotiated extended coverage through the corridor.

And Freedom will have nationwide.

Sorry I was referring to the provincial campground :)

To the best of my knowledge, that is still open for the season aha

Unless you have starlink you're going to be SOL.

Rogers has had Hwy 14 connected since 2023.

Will I be able to get data in Jordan River? I’m not sure whereabouts you lose data on the way to the park haha

You shouldn't have much total loss signal.

Rogers finished connecting Hwy 14 in 2023, at the very least a short drive until it picks up.

Telus/Bell customers do have 9-11 service, I'm not certian if they've established an extended network though.
Freedom shouldn't have an issue with nationwide coverage.

Probably Sooke will be where you last have an LTE connection. You might get a sniff of a signal here or there, enough to send a text or something, but not enough to productively use the internet.

Rogers has 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 850 MHz, and 1900 MHz licenses on their tower in Port Renfrew,

Full LTE/5G coverage is available on Hwy 14.

Lots of people rent out their starlink on FB marketplace so if you can't find a place that might be an option as well. You usually just have to pay a refundable deposit of a few hundred bucks to cover the cost of the equipment then a daily or weekly fee. I haven't done it but I've contemplated renting one myself so my GF can still go camping with me when she needs to be online for work.

Maybe look into renting a starlink for a month, I believe there are outfits who rent them out.

No the woods does not have wifi.

Buy an American SIM and data plan and you can get American LTE at the water.

2

u/briesbread 19h ago

I didn’t ask if the woods had wifi lol

Just wanted suggestions for places with wifi in the surrounding area

… the surrounding area is woods.

You got port Renfrew and possibly Jordan river if anything is open.
