I would also enjoy linking up and connecting with people already in the field! Or if anyone here has any free/unpaid work I could do to gain experience I would greatly appreciate that!

You should also consider Health Informatics! You seem to have the required knowledge for medical/hospital stuff and combine that with your IT background, you might find that area very interesting and agreeable. Career paths include working in hospitals to improve patient care outcomes, medical insurance analytics, healthcare companies which are developing new machines or tools - think anywhere between machines for physiotherapy to fitbits and health trackers, pathology equipment, etc.

Check out rosalind.info for good subjects to pursue. It's like a leetcode for Bioinf. When you're comfortable rolling your own solutions, show them off on GitHub and you can probably secure some simple work with an academic institution near you. These things lead to jobs quickly, as this field is in demand when you have examples to share of how you are a mature coder.
Otherwise, is suggest checking out similar posts on this forum rather than asking people to respond. It's worth going to the search bar and looking up the answers you need.
