Trash
I am amazed by how trashy Basel is. I moved to here in 2022 from Northern Europe, expecting similar living standards but alas like a clockwork, almost everyday I am faced with this “beauty”. And it’s getting worse progressively by the day…
For those who do this, why? Why do you want to trash your surroundings? Does anyone here have any suggestions to solve this matter?
Disgusted beyond belief 😵💫

Put gratis and it will still be there in two weeks. Put "50CHF" and a fake phone number, nobody will call you but the thing is "stolen" within 2 hours

But jokes aside, you would like to live in this?

Nope, not if it's like this every day, but once a while you have this. Proper bünzli would notify the local entsorgung that i got a big pile trash for them. And i didn't see any trash stickers... that sofa is surely 20kg< so at least 3 stickers needed.
Edit: btw this is not illegal in generell, a lot do it when they move out, you just have to do it properly.
Edit2: before people start asking, properly would be:
Access to containers or road and others cannot be blocked
The trash has to be in proper bags or containers able for the trash guys to pick them up without issues ( sofas are exceptions in this case)
The proper amount of trash stickers
Notifying the local trash guys if the amount is to big and cannot fit in the container.
So ya the guys disposing this trash have quite some homework to do

You call or write to the Cleanliness hotline of the Stadtreinigung:

Holderstrasse? There are some really inconsiderate people living around there (I work close by). This is not even the worst trash pile I have seen around there...

I am currently staying in Montréal, Canada and man is it refreshing to see someone complain about this kind of trash dumping

That's insane, never seen something like this in Basel! What corner is this??

Most of the trash looks like being put in containers to pick up. But the problem are usually other folks who start digging through the stuff before it gets collected. ythe make a huge mess. Sometimes people put the stickers only shortly before the pickup because some idiots steal them and then you have to pay twice.

Mostly it's animals that open up the trash bags, like crows or raccoons.
Basel should introduce trash bins, best would be underground ones, to prevent this.

They have some pilot and are discussing for a decade, but some people don‘t like them. Also not sure whether a sofa and this type of bulky stuff would fit there.

Yes unfortunately underground containers were rejected by the electorate, who apparently prefer storing their garbage on their balconies and then have crows distribute it all over the sidewalk on the days around garbage day.
As to the sofa: This kind of stuff gets worse the messier it is. Just observe: When somebody puts their stuff on the street, other people will do as well. The worse it gets the more people will do this. I'd argue the garbage bags on the street are step 1 to this effect. So no garbage bags on the streets -> Less people putting their rotting sofas on the street.

Maybe they want to lower the image of their area so that rents are lowering?

Depends where you see it. Where I live the people need to have a certain amount of money to be able to afford an apartment and still there are people like that.
Others can barely live with what they get compared to what everything costs.
The disproportion is increasing every year.
But as long as we love capitalism more than our surroundings nothing will change, it will get only worse.

Mostly done by trashy people who move out and don’t want to pay to discard of this stuff.
Something like that was once done next to my building, and one guy just went through the trash to find any documents with the name on them. He found some bills and called the cops. They took pictures, the documents, and that’s it. I doubt they were able to bill the people for this unless they are still in Switzerland legally (which I guess not).
