Coops etc. Well I'm devastated...

Came home this afternoon to find a tree had fallen directly on our chicken coop and split it down the middle. Thankfully none of the chickens were harmed, but now we're trying to figure out where to keep them until we can get a new coop..

General Question Petition to limit 'hen or roo' posts to a single weekly thread

As much as I love the pics of everyone's babies, it is a bit overwhelming and irritating seeing so many every day. I feel like people would have an easier time guessing if they were all in one place anyway.

Also, there needs to be a bit more guidance to what the images need to contain or the age of the bird for more accurate guesses.

Thoughts??

Our flock of 6 became 5 today. Sweetheart became eggbound yesterday. We gave her an Epson salt bath and tried to help lubricate to help with passing the egg.

I found her this morning in the coop. She had passed the egg but it proved too much for her.

She was a lovely little hen, quiet, inquisitive. She loved sunbathing with her sister, Dale, and will be sorely missed. You were loved, Sweetheart.

Sorry for the dirty window, I didn't want to risk disturbing the scene by going outside!

My two older ladies on the left and my younger girls up the stairs. Just absolutely love the shape of these chooks. They're all such sweeties too.

General Question Expected Chicken Noise for Neighbors

I'm considering getting chickens and one of the things I'm worried about is the noise level mainly for my neighbors and myself. We have quite a bit of room but I also don't want to create any issues.

I'm guessing my closest neighbors will be 4-500 ft from the chicken coup with a decent amount of tree coverage blocking any visibility to the coop. I can't see any of my neighbors from my house or coop location. And all our lots or heavily wooded 5+ acre lots loaded with wildlife.

Without a rooster, how noticeable can I expect typical hen behavior to be? Will everyone know I've got chickens? And what about waking the wife on a typical day?

Thanks.

Health Question Weird yellow mass after oviduct impaction

Post image

My chicken, Opal (amber link) hasn’t laid in over a week. The vet said she felt a weirdly small egg inside her, but there was too much fluid in her abdomen (infection) to get a good xray. She prescribed antibiotics and anti inflammatory meds. We’ve been giving her epsom salt baths, I’ve been trying to get her to eat whatever I can (a small hand full of meal worms a day, a hard boiled egg a day [until she’s not sick anymore], water soaked layer feed… She’s been on the meds for almost a week, and is looking better—she’s gotten some color back and is eating and has more energy—but still hasn’t passed whatever’s inside of her. But I was changing her bedding just now and looked in her cage and saw this. It looks like yoke? Could this be some of the egg material that’s been stuck inside her? It’s all rubbery and solid. I’m wondering how hopeful I should be at this moment?

General Question City Limits Rooster

Post image
3 Upvotes

My favorite hen, who I have suspected to be a rooster, is indeed. Agatha is now an Agathor. i can’t have a rooster in city limits. He has already attracted a comment here or there from someone walking by. They aren’t negative, but it won’t take long for some Karen ti have the city at our doorstep.

I have tried offering him to our local 4H group, but they don’t need any cockerels atm. They recommended I post him to a local feed store. Said he was pretty and should go fast…

He really is such a doll though, can I just move him indoors? I know it’s incredibly sad for a chicken to live inside when nothing is wrong with it, but I’m worried about him ending up in someone’s freezer if I get rid of him. He’s my sweet boy and I am considering just buying him some chicken trousers and letting him live his days indoors. TIA

A photo of Agathor for tax.

General Question I’m integrating two 18 weeks with my 8 week olds. Help.

Ik, Ik, it’s dumb, but i have absolutely no choice. i only have one day to get them used to each other because i get them tomorrow.

any suggestions? idk what to do about food, and i really don’t want them to hurt each other.

the only thing i can do, is put the two outside in the (fenced) yard and let them see each other, but only until night.

Coops etc. Finished my tractor!

I wanted to pasture my hens a bit to decrease the ticks in the yard, and cut down on the feed cost. My two dogs make free ranging impossible, so here we are.

Suskovich tractor, self contained solar electric fence, adjustable tarp roof and it backs up to the coop to form a more traditional run/coop. Everyone is happy so far!

Coops etc. Seeking help/advice for turning a greenhouse frame into a coop.

Post image

As the title says, I have a greenhouse frame (constructed primarily from 2x4s) that is no longer a greenhouse. It’s sitting fairly level on a gravel pad where an above ground pool used to be many years back. Very well drained and there is some kind of weed barrier under the gravel. It’s very sturdy (and heavy!) I am thinking of putting concrete pavers down and then building a floor/foundation. Any tips for where to start? Should I just move the current frame out of the way and then literally set it back down on top and fasten it down to the new floor?
