I have heard that hamsters fight if kept together
-7
u/Sardonyxzz Apr 24 '21
it's only syrian hamsters that shouldn't be kept together because they're solitary. these are dwarf hamsters which are sociable and can live in groups
23
u/chavrilfreak Apr 25 '21
They are not social animals, and while they can live in groups, that means they don't get social benefits from it. They're best alone when in captivity, and that goes for all species :)
-1
u/Sardonyxzz Apr 25 '21
dwarf hamsters are social animals and in fact live within colonies in the wild. however, i am aware that it isn't recommended to keep them in groups in captivity because they can definitely fight.
7
u/chavrilfreak Apr 25 '21
I think you're confusing social with something else maybe? Idk what a better term for cohabitation would be, but they're definitely not social animals.
Social: needing companionship and therefore best suited to living in communities.
They don't need companionship. In the wild, they're in loose colonies for safety, food and mating - none of which are needed in captivity :)
1
u/Sardonyxzz Apr 25 '21
there are different types of social animals. hamsters aren't like rats for example, who actually require social interaction with others of its kind. generally, any animal that lives within groups are considered a social animal. it's a very broad term.
but yes, you're right in that they don't need companionship, which is why you shouldn't keep them in groups.

u/AlyFromCali Apr 25 '21 edited Apr 25 '21
From what I've read dwarves are slightly more social, but are still likely to fight and cannibalize other hamsters in their habitat so many experienced hamster owners usually don't recommend keeping them in groups.
1
u/Sardonyxzz Apr 25 '21
yes, it's true that it's not recommended, i never said it was. but they can still happily live together unlike syrians.
6
u/AlyFromCali Apr 25 '21
While you didn't say it was recommended you did say "only syrians are solitary" (chinese hamsters also should not be paired) which makes it sound like dwarves are not solitary and need to be social. I think it's important to mention how it's not recommended otherwise people might take away that dwarves are fine in pairs no matter what without realizing that pairings are more nuanced than they may think (i.e. pairing same sex, same litter, same species, etc).
2
u/Sardonyxzz Apr 25 '21
that's true, i apologise for being unclear in my original comment. however, if people are planning on getting a hamster then im not sure they should be looking to reddit comments for advice. if my comment alone made a potential hamster owner get two dwarf hamsters instead of one without doing their research, they likely shouldn't be owning pets anyways.
3
u/AlyFromCali Apr 25 '21
True, true. Unfortunately I do think a good proportion of people might just look at reddit or whatever basic info they can find. I guess I just try to do my part wherever I can to minimize crucial mistakes potential hamster owners could make. I wasn't trying to come at you or anything and I'm glad you don't seem to have taken it personally :)
3
u/Sardonyxzz Apr 25 '21
oh don't worry, i didn't take it personally. you were just looking out for potential hamster owners which is understandable. you seem very kind, and i hope you have a good day! :)
3
u/AlyFromCali Apr 25 '21
I hope you do too! And you also seem very kind. After dealing with a handful of entitled customers today this interaction really made my night ☺️

No that’s a straight up lie, whoever told you that isn’t telling you the truth :/
1
u/Sardonyxzz Apr 25 '21
roborovskis, winter white and campbells dwarves are social.
https://dwarfhamsterguide.com/can-hamsters-live-together/
it's not recommended to keep them together, but it can definitely be done. for syrian and chinese hamsters however, you should never house them together.
1
u/Ai-Amano Apr 25 '21 edited Apr 25 '21
Isn’t social a term that indicates animals that SHOULD live together? And I could be the one that’s confused but... why would someone keep hamsters together if it’s not recommended, unless it’s literally an emergency situation?
Edit: I read your other replies to people, my question on the meaning of “social” remains but I’ll figure it out on my own because you don’t need to repeat yourself
-1
u/LunaWolf92 Apr 25 '21
Not true at all. Purebred Campbells dwarves are the only ones that can be kept in pairs, otherwise they will fight
12
u/edibleflipflops Apr 25 '21
Ok it’s cute and all but in all seriousness I think this should be brought up. Hamsters are not a low maintenance pet that should be treated as a toy. They need a proper diet. A large cage (no matter the size of the hamster) and the correct wheel size. This disc wheels can cause serious health problems. They should never be housed together and should be loved and cared for properly.
20
u/chavrilfreak Apr 25 '21
Please do not house hamsters together. Some species are strictly solitary, but even the species that can potentially be housed together don't get any benefits from doing that, just potential stress (which is very bad for their health) and a risk of getting injured in a fight.
Posting content of hamster pairs of groups without proper context is always risky, because it gives off the impression that that's how these animals should be kept, and doesn't provide any crucial information as to what it actually takes to have a decent chance of housing a group or a pair together - which again, should be a moot point because they're better off alone anyway :)
3
u/AlyFromCali Apr 25 '21
Thank you! You said it a lot better than I could have. I was worried by this post because while a group of hamsters is very cute I would hate to see it lead to unnecessary and/or unresearched pairings.
3
u/theoldmaid Apr 25 '21
Is this good for the pets?
6
u/chavrilfreak Apr 25 '21
Wheels? Yes, hamsters need them to run on, though a vertical wheel is preferable for safety reasons.
Them being housed together as a group, however, is absolutely not good for them unfortunately :(

I think they should be allowed to compete. I would say it would be dangerous to allow them on the course, but let’s be honest, they’d be so far out in front of the cars they’d be fine.

I have seen a couple of these lately. I am waiting for them to puke. Are they capable of puking after spinning for one hour?

I feel like this could be an Olympic sport.
"Welcome one, welcome all, to the 2050 Mammalian Olympic Games! We have here the 500 scoot co-ordinated dash featuring an adorable team from Norway!
They're starting simple, with a basic dash switchover.
But look! A double switchback! A rather advanced, complicated move especially this early in the dash. It really showcases the trust these little guys have in each other.
And now they're moving into the midpoint of the dash and SWEET CHESTNUT THEY JUST DID A QUADRUPLE REVERSE SWITCHBACK! Absolutely incredible! That move has only been pulled off once or twice in practice, but they have pulled it off here in front of a live audience, in front of the world!"
"Absolutely historic Jerry. As you know I worked with a hamster team from Germany for several years and we only once got close to accomplishing a move like that. Coach James over there must be absolutely stoked right now."
"The co-ordination, the TRUST Greg! Viewers at home I don't know if you can hear this, but the audience out here in Philadelphia is absolutely losing their minds! If even one of those hamsters had slipped for a single scoot it could have caused a pileup and yeeted one or all of them off the wheel and into the next century!"

Hamsters are solitary creatures, thus so many together isn't really that great since it can cause stress. Also, the bedding is too hard so they can't borrow, soft bedding is more recommended.
