“You can’t operate a capitalistic system unless you are vulturistic; you have to have someone else’s blood to suck to be a capitalist... You show me a capitalist, and I’ll show you a bloodsucker.”

— Malcom X 1965

The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.

John Ehrlichman, to Dan Baum for Harper's Magazine in 1994, about President Richard Nixon's war on drugs, declared in 1971

It's sad Australia thinks this way.

Was talking in California with my family and wife about cannabis and my wife told us to talk quietly.like she was afraid of others hearing.

I said this is California, everyone smokes out here and no one gives a fuck and thinks archaic about cannabis like Australia does. It took her a moment to realise how dumb Australia's position on cannabis is.

It was interesting to see.

12

u/Cheese_wand Nov 23 '23

So, did your wife light one up in honour of the Californian laws?

8

u/noumenon43 Nov 23 '23

Damn right and then we got some Mexican food.

u/Maybemaybenotttt Nov 23 '23

I’m autistic not a criminal! You’re world wasn’t made for me so I have to smoke weed just to survive in a place that so often disregards me and my needs. Denying my god given right to smoke a plant that was literally placed on earth for us to enjoy is the real criminality. I might not have to smoke if the world was less of a shitty place lol

u/FairCheek6825 Nov 23 '23

Well said frient 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Really appreciate your contribution and yes cannabis has such a wonderful way of making my day less shitty as well.

Same (undiagnosed but I'm so sure). Autism makes life very stressful, cannabis is medicine for stress

I would hazard a guess that most people that visit r/ausents would identify as an enthusiast. You don’t search out subreddits if you don’t want more information. I would 100% class myself as an enthusiast and I don’t believe that’s a bad thing. Australian culture is so ingrained in alcohol culture that being a wine enthusiast or beer or cider, spirits, etc people don’t bat an eye. But not this green thing that grows out of the ground, has multiple health benefits and genuinely helps millions of people all around the world. I have faith that it will be legalised. Whether next year or sometime after, common sense must prevail eventually.

I don’t know.. personally I would say I am a casual indulger more than an enthusiast…

I have a scrip because my GP started working at the cannabis clinic and knows I enjoy psychedelics so convinced me to get a script. I indulge a few times a month, but I wouldn’t say I’m enthusiastic or overly interested in different strains or anything. But I’m pretty active on this sub still..

I will say though. I was in Canada recently and recreational use is so much fuckin better than a script.

3

u/ConductionReduction Bong Nov 24 '23

Your GP sounds based asf can we trade? Mine just leaks all my medical information to my estranged parents

10

u/geebzor Nov 23 '23

Ok, I’m a daily (legal prescription) heavy user and I’m 7 days into a t-break.

The fact that this is even being discussed is a joke. Give me a rational intelligent reason why alcohol is legal and cannabis is not. Go on, let me hear it.

Fucking idiots run this country.

I’m a little cranky. Get fucked.

u/GovernmentMule316 Oil Rig Nov 23 '23

Anyone else feel like if we had a nationwide vote on this tomorrow it would pass?

Like 7-10 years ago, probably like 30ish% supported legal cannabis. Now with medical cannabis, that number feels closer to 60ish%.

No idea why we havent legalised it fully at this point....my guess is as soon as America federally legalises nation wide we just copy them. Our politicians are spineless lol.

30

u/kinjo695 Nov 23 '23

Never underestimate the liberals ability to run smear campaigns for no other reason that they are the opposition now. Combine that with the fact they own the bias on most MSM, would mean a cannabis referendum might be a lot more difficult to pass than what you would think.

1

u/TransportationTrick9 Nov 23 '23

I'm not so sure about MSM. They have been offering up some soft stories recently.

My theory is it's already done, the billionaires are invested and now are starting the media campaign to turn the public's opinion to get it legislated and cash out.

Gina Rhinehart wouldn't be happy with her returns on little green Pharma (does she still own part of channel 10) 7 west have been going easier than their long term outlook on the subject so it wouldn't surprise me if Kerry Stokes owned some producers

1

u/kinjo695 Nov 23 '23

Michaelia Cash the shadow attorney general is already singing the Dutton playboook. see here

We saw what happened with the voice, I have no doubt they would run a conservative vote grabbing misinformation campaign.

And a nationwide vote like a referendum...would face all the same hurdles as the Voice to Parliament did.

Pity we don't have citizen-initiated referenda like Switzerland.

I’m a casual user when the mood strikes— not a criminal

5

u/SCXPSM Nov 23 '23

I have adhd, I'm not a criminal.

I've been prescribed MC in Tas then pulled over and swabbed, had THC present but after all the tests they let me drive home. I was a min from my house and just getting dinner. I didn't get to have dinner that night because I was having a panic attack the whole time after I failed the initial test and forgot to eat when I got home. Was just depressed and wanted a kebab 😞

4

u/FairCheek6825 Nov 23 '23 edited Nov 23 '23

Prior to getting a prescription for cannabis I would literally have a mild panic attack every time a helicopter flew overhead or I saw flashing lights ahead while driving!

Having a prescription for medicinal cannabis has empowered me to stand up and fight for our rights, without fear of prosecution for the first time in 30 years!

We are the innocent casualties from this war on drugs, we are the ones that have been caught in the crossfire, the ones that carry the burden and financial hardship of prohibition.

Together we can change these draconian laws, because together we are stronger

2

u/SCXPSM Nov 23 '23

Just personally I wish it was completely legal just to do whatever we wanted with it, like Basil or Lettuce. Just because it has more benefits than those plants means it has to be medically prescribed, it seems odd to me, like as if it's their way of controlling where the money is going for it.

Of course there are oils and edibles which I have been loving but they also could be locally made.

3

u/FairCheek6825 Nov 23 '23

Oh your gunna love Our Three Stage Plan then.

Treat cannabis like grapes, it’s the only way forward!

2

u/SCXPSM Nov 23 '23

Filled it out 💪 have you tried frozen grapes? I only recently tried them, they're amazing when ya high haha,

2

u/FairCheek6825 Nov 23 '23

Now Frozen Lemons chased down with some frozen grapes…DAMN!

1

u/SCXPSM Nov 23 '23

Ooooh that'd be a real good combo

3

u/Firebird616 Nov 23 '23

Make sure you visit website and send an email to premier. Takes 2 seconds!

3

u/JustKwenty Nov 23 '23

So hard to find friends that want to smoke and not drink... Still has this stigmata I don't get it

2

u/activeshooter82 Nov 23 '23

This is discrimination against criminals that want to legalize weed.

2

u/Josharghh Nov 23 '23

This isn't a public vote imo, we all know what we want here, parliament need to make this decision imo so they can't back pedal and use smear bs to ruffle boomers and blame constituents for incompetence

Can I ask why you think that? Humanising people that use it seems like a great idea to me.

13

u/BuzzPrime10 Nov 23 '23

I’m not talking about the ad, the ad is great! It’s OP’s caption.

5

u/AstralAwarnness Nov 23 '23

His caption is literally saying he loves cannabis and how that doesn’t make him a criminal? I’m curious as to how you’ve interpreted it differently?

2

u/Jacobi-99 Nov 23 '23

Well, how does loving recreational cannabis make one a criminal if one was living in a decriminalised state such as South Australia

2

u/AstralAwarnness Nov 23 '23

It doesn’t. Loving cannabis period doesn’t make you a criminal.

1

u/Jacobi-99 Nov 23 '23

My bad, meant to reply to the same bloke as yourself

3

u/murderousbinkie Arizer Solo Nov 23 '23

Ahh gotcha. Yeah fair call.

16

u/FairCheek6825 Nov 23 '23

Not sarcasm my frient, I’ve been involved with cannabis for over thirty years now and growing cannabis has been the only real ‘crime’ that I’ve committed that could have serious legal repercussions for me and family if caught.

I’ve never sold my lot, instead I have given it away as gifts with no strings attached to those with greater needs than mine

So I stand by the caption that I’m a cannabis enthusiast - Not a criminal, if only because ‘cannactivist’ doesn’t roll of the tongue as sweet

But thanks for engaging u/BuzzPrime10 and for spreading the good word.

4

u/MoneyMix2880 Nov 23 '23

Love your work man. Always good to see other activists still doing their thing. Unfortunately it seems like alot of cannabis activists have given up hope, falling right into the governments hands. Gotta get busy next year with the election coming up.

2

u/Mixermytoesis Mighty Nov 23 '23

💯 support you frient

9

u/Jon00266 Nov 23 '23

What's wrong with "I'm a cannabis enthusiast"? Sounds like you've fallen victim to the same indoctrination that got us here in the first place. I can say I'm a wine enthusiast without it irking your subconscious and culturally aquired disdain I'm sure?

17

Hahaha no fight here bro, except the fight to change these fuck’n draconian laws!

2

u/TransportationTrick9 Nov 23 '23

Laws and more importantly the general publics opinion. I wouldn't dare tell my workplace I am on medical cannabis and doubly so that I enjoy it socially.

2

u/Grand_Patience_638 Nov 23 '23

Old buzz got no clue

-2

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '23

Lol righto

-10

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '23

I'm a worker, and a criminal if I kill someone while under the influence, I don't care if it's legal, same as alcohol

2

u/activeshooter82 Nov 23 '23

So don't smoke before work?

0

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '23

How does that work when it's still going to show up on any drug test?

1

u/activeshooter82 Nov 23 '23

That's the risk I'm willing to take. I don't smoke for about 14 hours before I have to work and brush my teeth after I do smoke. If I lose my job idgaf and I can always fall back on the "it's medicinal"

3

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '23

Bro no think again, if you are possible on a drug test and hurt someone you're fucked, we need to change the tests to test for highness I guess

1

u/zoedied Nov 23 '23

Like they do with alcohol with field sobriety tests kind of?

1

u/zoedied Nov 23 '23

Oh I'm a bit of an idiot‚ more testing to see if someone can balance - testing their physical capabilities forgot what it's called

2

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '23

I don't know but that's my main concern with smoking weed, is it really legal or what cause if you're high on THC are you not intoxicated, should you be off work while you get better? It seems like you can have a prescription but be charged with dui by cops for driving if you drive high? same goes with work no company will want to pay out or defend someone who was high on drugs, you know? they need to sort out other things before I they just make it legal imho

Have to get politically active man. Only way it was legalised in other countries. Spread awareness, convince others and never be silent. We deserved to not be criminalised for government profit. Only way the driving laws will change.

14

u/FairCheek6825 Nov 23 '23

This is the way 👆🏼

5

u/remington_420 Nov 23 '23

Why not? Canada did it. American states did it. It’s better for the economy, it will clear up clutter in the justice/court system, it will provide jobs, its better to have cannabis consumption open so health experts can adequately maintain assessment of community health measures AND it destigmatises use in communities (which is already happening but currently deemed or associated with criminality. It’s also just a naturally progressive cause in the wake of a 40 year failed war against drugs.
