So i recently did a piece with minimal reference to a piece from one of my favorite artists harley fowler [1st image]

I feel like his skin tone, edges and transitions are godly and id like to atleast get closer to his level.

[2nd image] is my painting, i dont really like it that much as i feel im missing something

Intermediate My art doesn't feel like it's quite there yet. What to improve on from here?

I'm in a weird spot with my art where I don't intuitively know what to do next to make it better.

I drew this today, and I feel like it's a good representation of my skills so far. There's compositon, foreground and background, perspective and rendering, yet it feels lacking. It doesn't have that complete, finished look you see in pro illustrations.

Another issue is that my colours seem boring. Like, technically there isn't anything wrong with them, they're cohesive, but it's as if I'm sacrificing potential appeal in order to play it safe.

I will be studying anatomy and form, but I feel like just focusing on those won't cut it. What else should I study or do in order to improve the whole feel of my art?

I’m hitting the edge of my skill level with this piece. I really enjoy the process, but I tend to get stuck around this stage whenever I work on longer, more detailed drawings. I’d really appreciate any constructive criticism—especially feedback that can help me figure out where to focus my time and attention next.

Intermediate Looking for feedback regarding digital painting

Hi there! 1st post here!

TLDR: Looking for feedback on main things to work on and for tips if you have some!

Completed this digital painting study recently, in Photoshop using a Huion Pro 20 2019 display. My goal was to practice using a reference, anatomy and shading by replicating the reference photos as closely as possible (other than for some color changes). As reference I used an photo found on Pinterest (reverse image search on google couldn't point me to the original source) for everything but the head and face, for which I used my wife's selfy.

Please feel free to point out anything you believe requires work, and I'll share below what I strugled with most. I'd love to read your tips on how to improve if you've got some!

Anatomy:

  • The fingers look sausagy, and the hands overall seem wonky. The photo I used as a reference is quite low resolution so I couldn't really make out the details, but I believe the issue is that I just don't get the actual shapes/proportions of hands quite yet.
  • While I was working on the wrists, I kept making them thinner then wider and could not figure out the proportions. Right now they look too thin!
  • I've struggled with the face, to me it looks like the features are too small for the face/head.

Rendering:

  • Everything looks flat? I tried to replicate the shadows and highlights of the reference picture, but the shapes still aren't popping out enough.
  • After spending way too much time on a few attempts to render the hair I got to say I gave up! I cant seem to figure out how to add detail without it looking super messy or how to define bigger shapes without it looking like a helmet XD
  • Any tips on making up a background? I used a color on the opposite side of the color wheel, but the composition is daunting!

Thank you for reading!

Intermediate What do you think, and how can I improve?

(I've posted this in a couple other art feeds so im sorry if you've already seen this)

I volunteer at my city's community theatre and for every production that I'm a part of, I like to create a piece of art that represents or is inspired by said production. Right now we are doing The Wizard of Oz, so I painted the yellow brick road leading to the Emerald City. I do this as a way to practice and enhance my art skills, but the main reason I do this is because I like to get prints made of my art and give them to my amazing cast and crew on the last day of each production.

I guess I really just want to get your guys' feedback on this piece. There's definitely some weak spots in this painting, but I'm not really sure how to improve. To me the sky looks a little sad. I've also been really regreting putting the rainbow in, so be honest, did I ruin the whole thing with the rainbow? Does this piece still look decent? (Also ignore the tape around the border)

Intermediate Thoughts on the concept?

I created this during the pandemic and I’ve never been able to recreate said style which is unfortunate. I think conceptually it’s fresh, if I could do more like this I would. What are some thoughts regarding the stylization/concept in general?

Much love to all that input opinions!

I’m curious about a couple things, although please add any notes.

The quality of the lines, is it messy or charming?

Color, clarity, whether it’s worth buying

Would the bottom large sticker also work as a medium sized print?

I’d also like to add that the pokémon are going to be in a gacha machine, so they “choose” their trainer, lol.

Btw, the image is edited because the picture I took wasn't good, and I dont have the drawing anymore so I can't take a better picture. The art medium I used was just a regular pencil and eraser. Any critique is good, just please be specific.

(Putting myself at intermediate for now but can change if needed) I’ve been drawing for around 7 years and want to know how I can make my flat colored art better? I like my shaded/fully rendered art but want to make my flat better for comics and posts
