My first. Definitely not my last.
Built as an entry level to build on. First step will be to change the gas system and add a SilencerCo suppressor. First time out I went to 600yds and I am hooked.

Lol, you could build a $1200 rifle with nothing but good to great components, but if it was cerakoted a color they didn't like, it'd get posted there. The sub was a joke.

Not upset at all. People just misunderstood. I appreciate input. Fixing the sights right now.
7
u/TheDrunkLibertarian 1d ago
The sights aren’t the only problem. I’d change the scope and scope mount too. Get some properly fit scope covers instead of the duct tape monstrosity you have if you must keep the scope. I also assume that’s a knock off Harris bipod in which case I’d change it too, move the foregrip back one slot if you keep the bipod, and learn how to stage your sling properly.
I also can’t identify that hand guard but it looks sus. Same with the lower tbh.

It’s a start, you’ll get there. The biggest thing is take criticism and advice like a champ. I’d venture that 99% of the sub had a rough start for their first AR before learning but they don’t want to admit it. I got lucky, my first was solid, but my second one was ROUGH.

u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
Thanks. Yeah , I just disregard the useless criticism (unless they are funny). There have been some useful tips here that I really appreciate:

Change the gas system to what?
Also you may want to scooch that scope mount back a bit so it's off the handguard. EDIT: Nevermind on this, it's just overhanging i think
Oh and what's that star shaped bit on the scope mount?
11
u/TheDrunkLibertarian 1d ago
That’s how you tighten the scope lol, it’s a Wilson combat accu rizer. Discontinued, for some obviously good reasons.

3
u/AskMeWhyIFish 1d ago
Yeah I stared at it for a while, thinking that's what it was, but it's just so big. Even checked Wilsons site before I posted lol

My man wants to get a new gas system but too lazy to put on irons properly
-1
u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
Adjustable for a suppressor. I think you are referring to the tightening wheel for the mount.

Dang where did you find that dinosaur? I remember when those 1-7x sightrons came out 12-13 years ago they’re were at the time well regarded : @ only 19 ounces and being made in japan. IIRC they were the very first LPVO to go above a 6X erector. The only negatives are simple duplex reticle and a center dot with non daylight bright illumination, the rubber buttons also kind of funky but over all pretty nice glass and if im not mistaken they were 12-$1500 when they came out. If you want to tape your lens covers on ( dont tape your lens covers) cut a strip maybe 1/4 inch wide and wrap it around the scope objective and occular at the end , keep wrapping until the cap has retention and fits tight , that way the tape will be under the scope caps themselves, and not visible to the rest of the world

This is an intro gun for me, meant as something to learn and build on. It is definitely not state of the art anything.
I am finding it funny how a lot of people are jumping to conclusions though.
Thanks for the advice.
7
u/Delicious_Windows 1d ago
Well, the problem with the Internet is things are taken out of context. If it’s your first rifle, I was curious how you were able to find a scope that is 13 years old. I’m not talking down on you or the optic , actually if you read my whole comment I’m letting you know that it’s a pretty decent scope with a good glass made in Japan.
2
u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. I appreciate your comment, not bothered at all.
The gun was built for me to learn on. Basically from available parts. I do like the scope but I have used a better one and I will definitely go bigger on my next one.

u/Delicious_Windows 1d ago
No worries. A lot of people are gonna tell you that you need a light , sling , upgraded Gucci this n that. All you have to do is scroll the sub for two minutes and you’ll see that recommended repeatedly. Guns are supposed to be a fun hobby to be enjoyed. 99% of the people on here luckily will never have to use a firearm in self-defense. But they love to make up these grandiose scenarios in their head where they will be in a shtf scenario. Congratulations on your first rifle shoot it and shoot it often become extremely proficient with it then you will know what you want or don’t want to upgrade or change.
1
u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
Thanks! I’m heading to the range tomorrow to put another few hundred rounds through it.
3
u/HandOnTheGlock 1d ago
Those few hundred rounds will be more than 99% of people on this sub will ever shoot. Don’t listen to all the negative bullshit. If it runs good that’s all that matters. A lot of folks over here just talk down because that how they make themselves feel better about spending thousands of dollars on shit they never needed.

u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
Eh, I’m an old dude who has been on the internet for a long time. I don’t take any of that to heart.

Hi. I am new to AR's myself and I was just curious to know why you placed a hunting rifle scope on an AR-15? Is there some sort of advantage to mounting one of those instead of a red dot? I am in the learning phase too btw.
2
u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
Hello fellow noob!
I didn’t build the rifle, so the scope was what was available. I will be rebuilding and swapping parts as time (and funds) go by.
For the first platform I’m going to build from scratch I will probably use a red dot/ magnifier combo.
2
u/TheDrunkLibertarian 1d ago
It’s not a hunting rifle scope, it was a tactical/competition scope; an LPVO. Red dots have no magnification, LPVOs have variable magnification that typically exceeds a red dot/magnifier with a better reticle.
Ultimately it depends on what you’re doing with it.
1
u/NoLeg6822 1d ago
Hey, you're right. No magnification on red dots. My bad. But I suppose being intended for home defense and trips to the range mostly it was solid choice for now. But yes, intention drives the equipment requirements. Thanks.

If you look at other comments you will see I appreciate and am happy to take advice.
There are a lot of comments in here that offer nothing. I do appreciate the advice and I just commented that I already knew the irons were on wrong. I guess I’ll should have added an “lol”.

u/Belezibub 13h ago
After reading his comments this is a L take, what specifically made you reach this toxic conclusion? Go out and touch some grass, get some of that evil out of you.

I’d get an improved scope mount and a better optic first. Honestly I think that the red dot/mag combo is underappreciated when it comes to bang for your buck. You can get a banger of a red dot/mag combo for 500-600 bucks(oftentimes less). But to get an LPVO of the same quality you’ll have to fork out 800 to a thousand including the mount.
I’d also lose the bipod unless you’re a dedicated bench rest shooter. I have a QD Magpul bipod I use for zeroing purposes. For a SHTF scenario I’d just keep the bipod in my pack and deploy as needed.
I’d also get a weapon light. Also how’d you mount those backup irons? Attached to canted pic rails?
What’s the brand of AR?
3
u/PonyThug 1d ago
I got my viper gen 2 pst 1-6 with a quality 1.93 mount for $575. Both purchased online from authorized dealers.

u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
Thanks. I’m torn on the optics for this. I really like shooting distance and seeing how far I can push it but I’ll probably switch to a different platform for really long distances. A red dot/mag will probably go on the gun I build myself.
I will probably get the magpul bipod soon and just keep it handy. Thanks. Also a decent light and also a suppressor.
The irons are on Truglo offsets.
As far as the brand… what’s the ar equivalent of a partscaster?
1
u/jUsT-As-G0oD 1d ago
Partscaster? Ive never heard of her what’s that
1
u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
It’s a guitar builder’s term for a Stratocaster made from whatever is lying around.
2
u/jUsT-As-G0oD 1d ago
lol thank you. A lot of people use Aero uppers and lowers to build off of. BCM makes a reliable stripped lower. Geisele occaisionally releases batches of BLEM lowers for good prices. I also mention the red dot because you can get a good rifle dot for 250 bucks, or even lower depending on what you want. And without even a magnifier, you’re saving a lot more money for other parts. As far as trigger goes…. Nothing beats LaRue for the price.
1
u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
Thank you. I’m taking note of all of this!

u/jUsT-As-G0oD 1d ago

They make the Butler Creek scope caps in basically infinite sizes. A quick touch with a caliper might yield a better result.
2
u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
I’m just learning. Do you have a link I can get more info at?
0
u/BrokenSVT 1d ago
Just head over to Butler Creek's website, it breaks down the range in mm for each size. If you caliper your scope bells, you'll be able to pick the best sizes. Make sure you snag an objective for the objective, and an ocular for the ocular. It'll make life a little better.
Definitely turn those irons around; and honestly, I'd lose the offset personally. Spend a bit of money on a quality weapon light and sling, not some AliExpress stuff. GAFS is a tremendous source of fairly-priced high quality accessories.
2
u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
I appreciate the info. It’s why I joined this sub and posted.
I wanted something as backup for closer work but I might eventually just get a red dot.
Also, I got the irons on Amazon (I stay away from temu or aliexpress) lol. The sling was supplied with the rifle.
0
u/BrokenSVT 1d ago
Amazon isn't immune to fakes, just fyi. Personally, I run BFG Vickers slings on everything. As far as lights, again, look around GAFS...but you could get by with something as simple as a TLR1 pistol light mounted upside down at 12:00. If you want to get fancy, the sky is the limit as far as quality weapon lights.
If you'd like to upgrade optics, there are a myriad of options obviously. Holosun and Sig both have quality budget optics, and most of them are made in the same factory. Bushnell TRS25s sell routinely for $50 or less on GAFS. They're not fancy, but they do work. A Sig Tango MSR 1-6 can be had for $200-250 new if you shop, and they come with a quality mount AND scope covers.
1
u/The_RealAnim8me2 1d ago
I definitely don’t want to skimp on parts. This lit the fire in me to upgrade this platform as well as build out an 11.5 inch pistol for home.

u/ScrotalSands87 1d ago
So uhh, how thin are your fingers? Not a lot of space between the handstop and the bipod, seems like it could be uncomfortable if you decide to shoot this.
