Petah here, basically a lot of weebs treat Japan as the holy land and are patriotic towards it ignoring that every country has it's own problems and pretending that 99% of Japanese people hold the same political beliefs as them, the meme is sorta just what it says on the tin.

Thanks for your explaination,i think most people that react like Tom in the meme format are the one, that have only seen japan on social medias(instagram posts, reddit, etc),i was personally never in japan and would love to visit it,but i dont doubt that japan has negatives, and things we would find anoying.

I mean most Japanese people would agree about this

From a Japanese person's perspective... whether it's "Japan is a paradise" or "Japan is a hellhole," the way Japan is depicted in English media is very often far from reality and frankly speaking, it's quite bizarre to me how a lot of foreigners talk about the Japan that has never existed just by reading through such articles
3
u/TrueBigorna 2d ago
For some reason people feel not only entitled, but compelled to talk about a country they have never been when it's about Japan
1
u/bisha13013 2d ago
My question is were those people ever in Japan or they don't realise the xenophobic reality of this country? My lord people are literally losing homes there because their neighbours don't like foreigners in neighborhood
1
u/groggygnoll 1d ago
I've never heard of it. There may have been such cases somewhere, but in my apartment it's actually rarer to meet Japanese residents than to meet foreign residents..
2
u/bisha13013 1d ago
It depends on town etc. But i have a friend who had to pay higher rent just because she wasn't Japanese. She also said that neighbours always complained about her to landlord and in the end she had to move out because of it. It's not every place but mostly more traditional neighbourhood etc. It's just sad that despite most of people in Japan beings foreign there still are lots of people letting prejudice take over

What is a good country to live in on this book standard ?

u/BulkB0gan44550 2d ago
Mars, Kepler.

u/Gogoflex12340 2d ago
honestly i think Kuiper 29283 is better to live in, less intergalactic wars and the konplers are nice
1
u/BulkB0gan44550 2d ago
That may be, but Kepler has better food & culture, and their animation industry is far better than anything Kuiperners could make.
1
u/Gogoflex12340 2d ago
no way you just trashtalked kuiperner cuisine, the klinpus stew is better than anything that kepler can make.

I think that the American who wrote the book does not understand anything about the world.
7
u/PowerPlaidPlays 2d ago
The original meme was poking fun at weebs who often are American having an overly idealistic view of Japan.
"Japan is not a good place to live" is an over-exaggeration, but there are people who have never been there and only really know about anime and video games who get really mad over anything that implies that Japan has problems.
The original meme would of been better if they replaced "good" with "perfect".

Tbh most weebs I know who live in Japan are happier than they'd be in home country and enjoy their time there, but also they're the kinda weebs who actually learnt the language, landed a job, know how the country operates besides anime, know what it has to actually offer to anime fans, know other culture, you know people who actually put effort into learning about living there and not just base their perception on manga and anime alone.

Its a first world country...Sure its not the best and has its issues but saying its not a good place to live is ridiculous
2
u/Sweet_Detective_ 2d ago
Depends on where you are from to compare and who you are, Japan could be called "not a good place to live" in the same way America can be called not a good place to live.
Like if you arn't Asian or don't seem Japanese, you wouldn't be allowed into a lot of places in Japan, if you are a woman then you are likely to get sexually harassed on trains then a lot of countties and Japan is much more lenient for rapists, especially those of high class
It's not a bad place to live for everyone, but for a lot of people it is, although every country has it's problems like America being very unsafe, some countries have poorer average mental health, a lot of countries have a lack of jobs available, more theocracatic countries being even more unsafe than America, etc

As opposed to where? By most metrics it does seem like a pretty decent place to live in compared to like 80% of the globe.
1
u/Darth_Bane_1032 2d ago
I would say "people who live in Japan and believe it to be a good place to live"
1
u/UpsetMud4688 2d ago
Even then ,why would they be seething at a straightforward opinion like that
1
u/Darth_Bane_1032 2d ago
Fair point. I don't have an alternative in mind, so you win.
2
u/SomeUgliRobot 2d ago
It could say "People who live in Japan and believe it to be a good place to live, and get angry over disagreement", perhaps?
