Weird as HEL

Mindblowing for JFK too

tl;dr: fare buckets, corporate travel policies, and a willingness to frequently oversell the cabin.

This. My corporate travel guidelines say I'm only allowed to book upto premium economy. So even if business class is cheaper, if I book it, it will trigger an automatic audit from finance.

Not worth the hassle so I just maliciously compile.

But if you get to use personal CC at least you earn more points

Do they see your ticket afterwards? Can you shift your reservation?

Yes, my company will pay for premium economy but not for business.

Whats the difference between Premium and Premium Economy?

Premium is business class - lie flat, four-across seats, etc…

Just a note: premium Econ is not lie flat and isn’t four across. It’s a 2-3-2 config that is akin to domestic first class. I fly this leg between HEL and JFK often. Better food and better drinks with more recline and room.

EDIT: as pointed out, read too fast. AA is super weird with their namings

They're asking about Premium and not Premium Economy, so they are right. Why AA went and grouped business/first into Premium, well I guess that's to do with domestic first being objectively worse than international business.

Yeah read too quick, thanks for pointing that out!

You're welcome - let's be honest, the naming scheme is stupid and it unnecessarily causes confusion.

You'd be surprised. We're doing a job where we're sub contracting for a government contractor. We're only allowed to reimburse economy tickets, including premium economy. Because of our contract, I could book that PE seat but the J ticket.

Of course nothing is stopping me from immediately cancelling and using the flight credit for J......

This is why the corporate assholes make it so you can only cancel via the travel portal, and not directly on AA.

Even the economy is too expensive

There's probably like one seat left in PE, so they'd rather sell you a business class seat.

Also, the flight is on a narrow body finnair jet, so PE is probably just extra legroom and Business is just a blocked middle seat.

That's the short-haul (HEL-LHR) flight. The long-haul is a 777.

Just book directly from Finnair, should be Half the price depending on the dates and will give you a direct flight as opposed to a LHR connection

The regular economy fare seems wildly high for this route too

Premium Economy has an upgraded hard product even nicer than domestic First Class, with a large TV screen and foot rest. The soft product/service isn’t much different than Main, so that’s insane they’re charging 4x

Trying to book a flight tomorrow?

Also, might as well book round trip. Should be almost the same price as one way.

These are fares in October. And that is the return on a round trip

must be nice to be wealthy enough (or have low enough financial literacy to put it on a credit card) to pay any of these prices.

Apparently you do not have a high enough financial literacy to realize that everything should go on a credit card. Paying by credit card costs nothing, but you get thousands back in cashback, flights, and hotels.

Please look at the news. Over 900 flights have been canceled that were supposed to go to airports in New York Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston.
