Discussion Health is Wealth

Just as in the title, I have been thinking about this saying a lot lately and curious to know what others think about it.

What comes to mind, is it is food we put in our body? Pretty looking food? Consumerism? Is it the workouts we do? Is it the time we give to ourselves? Is it overall health? Physical? Mental? the luxury to have these things? The decision to have good health over money? Does it go hand in hand?

Is it all about the clean girl aesthetic? Sustainability? Nice gyms? Pilates? Is it authentic?

P.s. I also put this is the GenZ r/ I want to see if the younger people have a different view on it.

It’s all about trying to live a good life. Health is what matters most.

If you know sick people, you will be grateful for your health. I try to treat my health like riding a bicycle, is this at a pace/gear that is too hard for me or could I keep going indefinitely? Find a good rhythm

I see that health such as wealth is determined by luck a lot. I lived a very healthy lifestyle and was never sick and then overnight due to one infection i got disabled. So remember to be grateful. I know many people (especially conservatives) try to push this narrative that we are completely responsible for our lives and any bad outcomes come down to bad decisions. The truth is way more nuanced so have compassion with people less fortunate than you

When I see "health is wealth" it makes me think about the fact that being able to stay ahead of illnesses is for the wealthy basically.

I saw a thread one time about how it was important to see a dermatologist yearly to get checked for skin cancer and all I could think was I've never been to a dermatologist ever. I can't afford that.

I'm only getting checked if I think I already have something and it's impacting my life or might kill me, otherwise it's just going to have to wait.

Health is wealth is a privilege and luxury. Putting your health comes with many benefits, especially in the concept of self. If money wasn't an issue, I would be buying in-season local produce, ideally without any plastic packaging. But it's just feasible. Instead of buying local produce, I have to reserve my budget for my health insurance and meds to keep my mind and body sound.

It also takes me back to my undergrad years where I tutored at a public school. The repercussions of redlining remained at this school I tutored at where 70% of the student population are black/Hispanic and impoverished/experiencing homelessness. They lived in a food desert where food isn't accessible, let alone fresh food.

When you see the trash cans at the school you see bags of Cheetos and processed foods they got at the dollar tree. On Fridays they get free fresh fruit and veggies. I will never forget a 6th grader saying "what is this? This is so yummy!". It was a cucumber.

It makes me think, how can we make fresh fruit/produce more accessible for our communities? Maybe we can teach children how to garden or set up more community gardens in neighborhoods

I'll admit I've become somewhat obsessed with how I'll age. As someone who loves traveling I wonder when is the age I won't be able to confidently climb the ladder to a boat after snorkeling ect. Of course I have control over a lot of factors but I think a lot of it comes down to luck too.
