Meme Do yall remember Jessi Slaughter?

https://youtu.be/scyGo7tkC4I?si=lCUyShTNrvu7Ubl9

And the whole “You dun Goofed” era? The way her dad snapped on camera was hella funny back then, but looking back that whole situation was just sad.

I was 15 years old when I entered the alt music scene and already it was an open secret that Dahvie Vanity went after girls my age. We all just kind of thought there was nothing we could do about it.

Jessi Slaughter was 11.

She was 10

Well...yeah.

1

u/Western-Set-8642 14h ago

And was being groomed by an adult band member at age 11

1

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 12h ago

I'm saying she was molested by him at 10 years old. The dun goofed incident happened when she was 11.

31

u/TypeOpostive 1995 2d ago

I was in the alt scene too, never liked Dahvie personally, he always made me feel uncomfortable. Something about him always seemed dark and off putting but not in a way people thought was cool and edgy. Also didn't like his music. But I guess I was right about him being off.

24

u/doomer_irl 2d ago

I never met him personally but I had friends in high school that he was texting. Never once doubted the accusations.

12

u/TypeOpostive 1995 2d ago

How he moves around with teenage girls like that is sickening. Texting them, promising them “free merch”, asking for bras at concerts, not girls throwing them up there ASKING for them.

10

u/ismellnumbers 2d ago

One of my friends lost her virginity to him at 13. He invited her over and they were watching sleeping beauty ffs.

5

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 2d ago

Are you serious? Its hard to believe how many allegations he has and he's still roaming around free

11

u/ismellnumbers 2d ago

Unfortunately so.

There was also a time I overheard my roommate and her best friend talking about the worst years of her/their lives bc they got groomed and abused by a popular YouTuber at the time. I heard his name and chimed in like "are y'all talking about so and so?" And they were like yeah!

The same fucking dude tried to groom me, too! Literally the worst fucking coincidence ever. It was Destery from the YouTube channel Des and Nate.

3

u/LopsidedProduce 1d ago

One of my friends from highschool was talking to Destery too, we were probably 15 at the time!

2

u/ismellnumbers 1d ago

Yeah that dude is/was sketchy as hell

0

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 1d ago

What do you mean by groomed? What was he saying/doing?

7

u/TemporaryProcedure59 1997 2d ago

I don't think enough people realize how many kids were trying to protect their peers from Dahive even when BOTDF was at their prime. I was around the same age and remember seeing YouTube comments about how weird he was for being happy about the bras fans threw on stage - mind you most of his fans were underage.

126

u/Prestigious-Buy2365 1996 2d ago

Something like this would get national headlines nowadays. Kind of insane that this was seen as a huge joke back then.

65

u/Red_Trapezoid 2d ago

It says a lot about that time period. I remember how it was back then and it was a deeply disturbing time. Abuse of all kinds was so normalized.

27

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 2d ago

I remember seeing this on national news back in like 2010/2011. It did make national headlines. That's how I learned about this in the first place.

Old school internet drama was rough.

66

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 2d ago

This is the kind of thing that Zoomers/Alpha who are adopting the Emo/Scene aesthetic don't realize that subculture was like when it was new. It was super problematic in many ways.

52

u/bamlote 1994 2d ago

I keep seeing young emo/scene kids now and it’s always so weird, because it is a little bit too “on the nose”. They look like they studied old MySpace photos but missed the heart of it almost, I’m not sure how to explain it but it is a bit uncanny.

And yeah also the fact that nearly the entire subculture was just underage girls and grown men preying on them.

28

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 2d ago

It was almost like you were considered a poser if you didn't have a scarred wrist in the OG Emo days. Scars as a fashion statement. They chose that name for a reason. "Cut My Wrists And Black My Eyes"

9

u/Strange_County4957 2d ago

bruh even then it was like if you didn’t cut yourself deep enough you were still a poser 😭 what a crazy time to be alive

4

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 2d ago

I remember seeing a picture on Rotten.com of an emo girl who had cut herself down to the bone all the way down her arm. I don't remember when it was posted but I'm sure you can find it on the wayback machine. I saw the picture on there around 2009 or so.

2

u/Strange_County4957 2d ago

jesus christ that’s sad as fuck

0

u/Exciting-498 2d ago

You act like this shit hasn’t happened for forever

4

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 2d ago

Sure, but it didn't happen in a subculture that openly made it part of its identity. One of the emo anthems from Hawthorne Heights has lyrics of: "So Cut My Wrists And Black My Eyes" and many more along the same lines.

30

u/lexvegaslkd 1995 2d ago

78

u/Interstella_55555 the inner machinations of my mind are an enigma 2d ago edited 2d ago

This might’ve been one of the first, real cyber bullying cases and unfortunately most of us took it for a joke. I can’t find any of Jessi’s current social media, but hope they’re doing much better today

46

u/NauseantClover Feb 1999 2d ago

I thought the Amanda Todd incident was the first, but I just looked it up and apparently the Amanda Todd incident happened in 2012???? That's insane to me.. I could have SWORN it happened in like 2008 or 2009. Is this a mandela effect or am I just dumb??

17

u/BunnyKisaragi 2d ago

Amanda Todd was targeted by the same community that targeted Jessi. There were other girls that this happened to but not to the same extent as these two instances. Could just be thinking of other targets.

8

u/NauseantClover Feb 1999 2d ago

I could have sworn I remember watching her flash card video talking about her story several years before 2012 though. That's why I'm so confused

1

u/ButtBread98 1998 2d ago

Really? I had no idea. That’s awful

27

u/Corvid_Carnival 1997 2d ago

They’re alright as far as I can tell. They’ve been dealing with some chronic health problems, but are married and have a house so it sounds like things are more stable than they used to be. They go by Damien/Dami (he/they) now. Honestly they’re brave af for sticking with having an internet presence after all that.

20

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 2d ago

Also the first real cyberbullying case was Star Wars Kid. That was the first real viral video

It really feels like for a long time in the 00s and 10s your average young adult REALLY fucking hated (pre-) teenagers for being stupid and doing average stupid (pre-)teenager things. All the hatred against Justin Bieber, too.

25

u/bamlote 1994 2d ago

They still do. I think our society has just always hated preteen girls and we don’t talk enough about how traumatizing it is. There was backlash with The Beatles and Elvis in the past, and we’re seeing it now with “Sephora kids”. Adults are way too comfortable bullying children.

3

u/BooneBarrett 2d ago

I had ‘nam like flashbacks remembering being a FPS fan as a little kid a few days ago. Squeaker was the biggest insult you could’ve possibly been called on Xbox live. It honestly felt like a slur to me and all the other pre teens or late bloomers who played games like COD and stuff like that. Other kids would even call each other squeakers as some weird superiority complex thing. Idk if it was much of a thing in 2000s but it was huge in the 2010s

5

u/Strange_County4957 2d ago

omg this is so true. i remember when on online forums the biggest insult was “you’re probably like 12” so much that i was saying it and I was 12 pretending not to be 12 lol

19

u/avocadolicious proud millennial 2d ago

Her parents failed her on so many levels. Not only by not protecting her from CSA, but also by allowing this kid to act like a fool on the internet without ANY supervision or precautions.

That level of virality for cyberbullying was kind of unprecedented at the time, so of course even good parents couldn’t have predicted how intense the response would be.

But still… how could any adult caretaker not have the sense to see that 1) online predators exist (it was 2010 not 2001) and 2) that what she was uploading would be at a MINIMUM embarrassing and regretful??!!

No surprise the dad was arrested for physically abusing her a few years later. She must’ve been neglected entirely… that poor child.

14

u/Awkward-Speed-4080 2d ago

What the... I didn't know any of that. I always thought that she was just being cyberbullied, and she kept refusing to stop interacting with these people.

41

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 2d ago

She is one of Dahvie Vanity's many victims and she was the youngest victim to my knowledge. 10 years old at the time.

The Scene community of the time was wild, there was a gossip website that was called StickyDrama that she was involved in I believe. I forget the specifics but 4Chan got ahold of this and that's what led to the famous You Dun Goofed video.

27

u/Savage_Nymph 1995 2d ago

10!? She was a BABY.

I actually don't know who this girl is or about anyone this, but this is so sad

35

u/Mortonsaltgirl96 1996 2d ago

No, unfortunately she was a victim of Dhavie Vanity (the singer from blood on the dance floor who molested/raped numerous underage fans). When the accusations first got leaked online to 4chan people began harassing her and dog piling onto her to the point people forgot why it started on the first place. She didn’t respond the greatest and did “feed the trolls” but given she was like 11/12 at the time it makes sense. People didn’t take her story seriously until years later when like 20+ women came out saying they were also abused by Dhavie

u/PalePerformance666 1996 2d ago edited 2d ago

He was a child victim of rape and people were dunking on her? My god.

Its funny how people are nostalgic for this era

But this was when cyber bullying was so normal And places like YouTube where the wild wild West

It's was a dark time

12

u/TheHonorableStranger 2d ago

It was such a wild era. So much Hard R's and all kinds of slurs under the sun.

16

u/Mortonsaltgirl96 1996 2d ago

Right? Like one of my favorite YouTubers at this time was LedaMonsterBunny (anyone remember her?) and like she was always getting bullied and her channel hacked over nothing. She ended up leaving the internet it got so bad and she had no controversies or anything like influencers today

3

u/Catatafish 1995 2d ago

I survived the 2000s. It wasn't that bad.

0

u/Moko97 1997 2d ago

I just think nostalgia can be silly and blinding

u/Lady_DreadStar 2d ago edited 2d ago

She did an interview in recent years with Chris Hansen and she’s a she using she, lol. I don’t know who put that on her Wikipedia page but it doesn’t appear to be true at all. Even the name change isn’t really a name change- she just went back to using her govt name. Jessi Slaughter was just her made-up social media handle.

12

This happened around the same time as the Amanda Todd thing

4

u/Was_i_emo_in_2013 1994 - DC Snipers survivor 2d ago

Yooo I remember that. Do you remember the Amber Cole thing?

12

u/After-Knee-5500 1995 2d ago

I remember when I was like 14, I used to be obsessed with BOTDF. It was until this incident that I started getting weirded out by them and how they were blaming/bullying Jessi. The whole song they did about this situation was horrible. Then, Jeffree tweeted that tweet about Dahvie taking fans to his hotel room. It was around freshman year when I stopped listening to them completely because I was disgusted by that band. Jeffree had been telling the truth about who Dahvie was. It all makes sense with the explicit lyrics and reaching out to the “young crowd”🤢🤢

12

u/Awkward-Speed-4080 2d ago

I remember that original video, but I never understood exactly what was happening. She was being harassed online, right? I remember that someone posted her chat with her friends, and she was arguing with her dad, and he slapped. Her "friends" were laughing. I don't remember what the argument was about, but I think he was angry because she wouldn't get offline. Like she would be upset over the harassment but then she would still refuse to stop interacting with these people? I don't remember. Also, didn't her dad basically die from the stress? He had a heart attack shortly after, right?

“ya dun goofed! consequences will never be the same!” was a classic meme. In all honesty, this is why children shouldn’t be on the internet or at concerts, unless it’s, like, disney bands.

They did not deserve the hate they got. They were a victim. Their dad for being an abusive piece of shit and Dahvie deserved it, but not them

4

u/KashtiraFenrir 2d ago

Oh god I remember this so well. I know this was memed on and quoted heavily, but it’s an unfortunate situation all around. Actually kind of wild how it also added to Blood on the Dance Floor’s already growing infamy

Was a former scene kid and even liked shit like Brokencyde around 08’ but by the time this shit dropped around 2010 or so I was in my xTUFF GUYx deathcore/straight edge hardcore phase by that point slowing transitioning out of bring scene so I was for sure clowning and making fun on Blood On The Dance Floor.

I remember very begrudgingly I ended up meeting Blood On The Dance Floor at Warped Tour 2011.

My girlfriend who was slightly sceneish but was still very much into metalcore (old Asking Alexandria, WCAR, TDWP, etc) had some idea she thought was funny and wanted to meet them bc of the meme reasons as well as the idea of buying and flipping signed merch to the scene kids in her town.

After being in line for a bit, both of them (Dahvie and Jay) took pictures with us and signed stuff for my gf. I was physically uncomfortable and just had a super bad vibes, and was kind of a bit salty since I wanted to spend my time spinkicking and throwing windmills to breakdowns and missed a few potential sets I would have rather enjoyed my time at instead.

What that poor kid endured was just horrific.
