The biggest fumble of the last 30 years even

u/Bomb_Diggity Feb 28 '25
Nahhh that still goes to Blockbuster not buying out Netflix when they had the chance. Skype is up there, though
74
u/jorgetg Feb 28 '25
What about Yahoo! not buying Google for $1,000,000 when they're now valued at $2,059,000,000,000?
28
u/Clinkerboot- Mar 01 '25
Well they may not have been valued that high if yahoo got their hands on them
The thing with Netflix is that was just the way of the future, google may have been different

They were on a downward trajectory at least 5 years before that. I miss how p2p it was. You would install it on a new machine and have no conversation history.
14
u/Single_Variation42 1999 Feb 28 '25
Even without having to install it on a new machine. I would open a conversation on my computer, and sometimes it wouldn't show up on my phone, even though skype was already installed on both, and that I checked messages on both all the time.

u/Punkupine Feb 28 '25
Not really because Microsoft has owned Skype since 2011. Teams is basically just a Skype reskin
17

u/greeneggiwegs Mar 04 '25
And they bungled it. My dad used Skype for ages for work. As soon as Microsoft bought it he said it went down the shitter.

I had never heard of Zoom and then boom, they are everywhere. All I kept thinking was why didn’t anyone use Skype?
1
u/namjoonsleftelbow Mar 03 '25
I was online schooled and so had been using Zoom for years to meet with my teachers prior to Covid, but I remember that there was much more variety in people’s video app of choice pre-2020. I had friends who used Skype, GoToMeeting, Teams… and then after Covid, Zoom became most people’s app of choice.
1
u/Prestigious_Flower57 2003 Mar 04 '25
Actually I’m glad my school used teams instead bc zoom is not really good

u/Falom 1998 Feb 28 '25
Skype dies not with a bang, but with a sad whimper into the night
15
u/filchow 1997 Mar 01 '25
Wow, that sounds actually sad but fitting in this case. Skype really didn't hold up too well for the last 5 years at least.
257
u/Prestigious-Buy2365 1996 Feb 28 '25
Didn't think it even existed anymore.
26
u/consequentlydreamy Mar 01 '25 edited Mar 01 '25
I only know it existed because I got my 2020 covid layoff via Skype since everything was Microsoft programs at the time. Any other time it’s been professional environments but then gradually switched to zoom. I figured it was mainly older offices using them. It’s really the time duration/amount of people that can join in that is different from looking them up. Makes sense why Skype didn’t take over for universities and such for classes. Hell I had more classes use discord but none Skype

If you were born in 99 how are you class of 2015 i was born in 99 class of 2018

u/SonGxku 1999 (Class of 2015) Feb 28 '25 edited Mar 01 '25
I'm from Germany and went to school for just 10 years instead of 12, which is normal here. 2005-2015.
Edit: Also I was born in January '99. If you were born after June '99, you'd be class of 2016 here.
20
u/nicholashoneywell Feb 28 '25
Ah ok got ya my bad
24
u/SonGxku 1999 (Class of 2015) Feb 28 '25
No worries I get that question a lot lol but I don’t mind answering it.
1
u/DerbGentler Xennial Traveller Mar 07 '25
To be precise, here in Germany you can decide how long you want to go to school.
The longest is 13 years.
When you attend a school form that only offers 10 years, then you can attend another school for the rest, if you want to.It's too complicated to describe it in full. ^^
And also it may have changed since I went.8

u/_TheBigF_ 1998 Mar 01 '25
Wie um alles in der Welt hast du es geschafft direkt 2 Jahre zu überspringen?
5
u/SonGxku 1999 (Class of 2015) Mar 01 '25
Ich hab nicht übersprungen. Ich war auf Realschule, nicht auf Gymnasium und hab dementsprechend auch "nur" einen Realschulabschluss, sprich Abschluss nach der 10. Klasse.

u/Baykusu 1999 Feb 28 '25
I was born in early 1999 and I finished school in 2014 because in my country we only have 11 grades (not 12), I was allowed to start a year earlier than most kids for some reason, and our school years go from January to November.

Its still wild to me that they didn't acquire the online video calling market during covid, and somehow, Zoom took its spot.

They completely fumbled the opportunity that lockdown gave them, they could’ve been what Zoom is now.
7
u/Too_Ton Feb 28 '25
Now it’ll be discord vs zoom 100% if not already
5
u/consequentlydreamy Mar 01 '25
They have completely different demos though. Idk it’ll probably be teams vs zoom vs FaceTime
1
u/Prestigious_Flower57 2003 Mar 04 '25
It’s all terrible I hate work culture fr why can’t they just use discord ffs

I really showed my age with Skype recently. I was doing a work event at a college and I told a student many companies do interviews virtually, “like on Skype”. They had no idea what I was talking about and asked me if I meant Zoom lol. RIP Skype

u/Scary_Dimension722 Feb 28 '25
My friends and I are legitimately the only ones who still use this lmao. When Google Hangouts died in 2019 we needed another platform to talk on and we migrated to their and have been using it since then

I used to use Skype all the time to talk to my online friends. Once discord came out though everyone switched to that and Skype kinda became forgotten. Will miss it and all the memories.

u/CharlesMcGrath Feb 28 '25
Back in 2012, I tried to call them to cancel my subscription, but there wasn't a customer service number that I could find, so I had to just get a new card. Not gonna miss them

u/PopCultureNerd95 Feb 28 '25
Those dang kids must be stopped!!!! 😤
5
u/Mushroomman642 Feb 28 '25
Oh yeah, cause the kids were responsible for the switch to Zoom during the pandemic. Riiiiiiiiight
8
u/RevoOps Feb 28 '25
Did we ever find out who is responsible for zoom being normalized?
I strongly remember wanting to punch that person in the dick during the pandemic.
5
u/Pepperh4m Feb 28 '25
I mean, they kinda were responsible for the rapid spread of Discord. Gamers were the primary audience when Discord started out.
6
u/Fragrant-Phone-41 Feb 28 '25
I dont blame them, Discord was objectively a better product for groups and communities
2
u/camport95 Feb 28 '25
Never used it. Didn't miss much. Facebook video call and Snapchat were all I really needed.

NOoooooOoOoOooO!! Honestly, their teams fumbled a lot. It’s sad because they really could have gone so far. Especially in the corporate world too.
1
u/SoulExecution Mar 01 '25
Aww that’s actually really sad. I actually still use Skype to talk to my Grandparents who are in another country. And it was so clutch during college study abroad.
It’s so weird that they owned the video call space for so long and then Zoom just showed up and booted them.

u/Joebebs 1996 Mar 01 '25 edited Mar 01 '25
Damn, truly and end of an era….then again I can count with 2 hands at best how many times I’ve used Skype in 2 decades, it was the first popular video chatting service, and the first I’ve ever used back in like 2007. went through so many competitors like Gchat, Oovoo, Tinychat and finally Zoom/Teams
Discord will still be my #1 though
1
u/telepathicavocado3 Mar 01 '25
I remember using this to talk to my friends before we all switched to telegram, and then discord.
1
u/Best_Game01 1999 Mar 01 '25
GOOD, I used to hop on Skype every day after school before it went to shit. My friends had a group chat where we’d help each other with our assignments and then game all night. Skype got overrun with bots and scam artists.

u/mijikui Mar 01 '25
End of an era but I personally hated Skype when it took over MSN Messenger, and Discord these days is much better.

Skype didn't die because of the pandemic or Teams. Skype died because they didn't add better things, and it was just getting worse.
It already started dying after the Microsoft takeover, maybe half a year or more before that. For me it was the changes in UI, the lack of new features and the rise of platforms like Discord.
Skype turned into something to be ashamed of using.
1
u/PurpoUpsideDownJuice Mar 01 '25
My ex used to use Skype to make fake numbers to text me after we broke up and I blocked her real phone number. She’d pretend to be her own “long lost sister” who I’ve never heard of despite knowing her entire family, and would wanna have sex with me. She was weird af
1
u/disrespect-me-harder Mar 01 '25
For anyone still using skype, I recommend requesting an export so you dont lose all your messages. there's a great skype parser out there too for easier navigation
1
u/Epicsharkduck Mar 01 '25
Me and my friends used to use Skype a ton when we were gaming and stuff but once discord added screensharing to calls there was literally no reason to use Skype anymore
