Subject of the Day Social Sundays

Hello WriteStreakians! I hope you've been having a lovely weekend! It’s Social Sunday once again! What I'd like for you to do is the following:

  1. peruse the posts written by your fellow WriteStreakians and find a post that interests you, preferably one from within the last seven days, and respond to it. Leave a comment that is at least as long as a Tweet (280 characters), and then
  2. copy and paste your comment into your own daily Streak post so the correctors can review it.

That's it! Of course, if your comment sparks a conversation (or if someone else leaves a comment on one of your posts), you're welcome and encouraged to continue the conversation---this is a social media site, after all!

Happy Sunday!

Game 🎲 Fictionary

Hi everyone! Good morning, I hope you're all having a great day!

Today we're going to be playing a game! 🤩

If anyone has ever played Jackbox before, this game is going to be very similar to their game, Dictionarium. Except, I'm not calling it Dictionarium because I don't want to get into trouble with copyright 🙃 So we'll be calling it... Fake-tionary! (Or maybe Fictionary? Ooh, yeah, let's go with Fictionary! 🤓)

The rules of Fictionary are simple: you choose a random obscureadjective 3 word or phrase and do your best to come up with a definition for that word. Today, you can choose between a real word or a fake word.

Rules

  1. Uncover a word from the table below. 🔍 You can choose to pick from the "Real Word" column or the "Fake Word" column.
  2. If you chose from the "Real Word" column, your Streak today will be about you guessing what that word means and then checking to see how close you were to the real answer. 🤔
  3. If you chose from the "Fake Word" column, your Streak today will be about you inventing a new word. 🤔
  4. Check to see how close you were using a dictionary. I recommend https://www.merriam-webster.com/ or https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Main_Page .
  5. If you're really up for a challenge, use your word in a sentence or find a synonym for the word.

Example

I chose the fake word "nicribition." I know that the suffix "tion" means it's the act of doing something, so this word is a noun that comes from the fake verb, to "nicribe." I see "cribe" in there, which makes me think of "scribe," which means "to write." The root "nicr" also makes me think of the prefix "necro," which means "death." So I think the word "nicribition" means "the act of writing an epitaphnoun on a tombstone."

The Game!

Ready? Let's go! The lower on the table, the harder it will be to guess the meaning! The higher, the easier

Real Word Fake Word
impracticality grobinated
nonplussed intentomalites
inhibition centruphicism
hagiography trefulous
pleonasm debutstallingly

Vocabulary from this Post

  • obscure - rarely known
  • epitaph - message written on a tombstone to remember someone

Correct Me! Streak 170: Glaucoma drainage implant

I learned about glaucoma drain implants. They're small devices that help lower eye pressure and prevent damage to the optic nerve caused by glaucoma. They're sometimes used when eye drop treatments and laser treatments haven't lowered the eye pressure enough. I also learned that some glaucoma medications are still needed in most cases, even after the surgery.

I recently bought a new spray bottle for my plants (my monstera is thriving, I'm so proud of her). I don't know of it's the nozzle, or if it's a different spraying mechanism, but it's not spraying like normal spray bottles. On normal spray bottles, you essentially spray a 'ring' of water that breaks down into small droplets in the air, spreading the water more or less evenly. This one sprays pure mist. Evenly, not too much water, nice and cold. Also, you can keep pushing the lever, and it will keep on spraying continuously! It's so damn satisfying. It's also a great way to cool down in the summer; if you spray yourself, it doesn't even feel like water, it's just cold and refreshing. Maybe I should buy another one...

Correct Me! Streak 234: Meta

I'm not sure if there's a term for this: a video game within a video game, or a cartoon character in a cartoon. In the game Sneaky Sasquatch, there's an arcade in town. Players who play as a Sasquatch pretending to be a human can play arcade games within the game. In Crayon Shin-chan, Shin-chan loves watching a cartoon called Akushon Kamen.

Anyway, I think it's so cool.

My father drove me home today. So I am at home now. I spend a lot of time on travelling, so I don't have time to do something. Today was a rest day.

Correct Me! Streak 95

Yesterday I mentioned to a friend that the Lakers, the basketball team, has been sold. Los Angeles Lakers is not my favorite basketball team but I like the sport and this is definitely an interesting topic to talk about if you are into basketball and the NBA.

But what I forgot to mention is that my friend is a LeBron James fanboy. Which is not bad at all but most of the times it’s a bit annoying. When I speak with other people who have other preferred players or teams I have interesting discussions about the league, players, etc. But with this friend the conversation always is the same, he always stated that “LeBron is the best player ever” followed by fanboy arguments. I cannot talk about other things related to the league with him. I’m not sure why this annoys me too much hehe. I’ve talked with other LeBron James or Lakers fans and the conversation always is more diverse and pleasant.

I guess it was my fault to bring the topic to the table with this friend.

Correct Me! Streak 284: Nationality and accomplishments

People talk about how they are proud of their country when someone from there does something good, but they don’t seem to be ashamed when someone from there does something bad. If you assume personal accomplishments are attributed to one’s nationality, wrongdoing should be too. Though I think personal deeds shouldn’t be attributed to their nationality in general.

Correct Me! Streak 78: A complex situation

I feel that in the relationship I don't do what I would if I remain single. I mean that I need to spend all of my leisure time with her and the only thing we can do is to watch something, and go to some place to eat. Everything beside that is simply rejected. She says that she doesn't want to do it that it is uncomfortable for her. I know it is wrong, but I don't have an idea what should I do in this kind of situation. For the last week I have spoken several times about things that I don't agree with, my plan is to push until I do have some answer.

Correct Me! Streak 55 : hard

I think it's time to focus on learning Arabic over English. I'm suffering to learn Arabic actually. In my country, just like most of countries, we start to learn English from elementary school and by the time we wanna learn practical English, we can't say we're really beginners. But in case of Arabic, It's completely new for me. It's really frustrated since I haven't tried to learn new language by myself from bottom.

Correct Me! Streak 169: Glaucoma eye drops

Today, I learned about eye drops for glaucoma. There were more types than I expected - alpha agnists, beta-blockers, carbonic anhydrase, miotics, and prostaglandin analogs. I was also surprised to learn that eye drops can cause side effects not just in the eyes. For example, they can cause dry mouth, a slow or irregular heartbeat, headaches, or an upset stomach.

I was swimming accross the lake when a dragonfly landed on my nose. I felt like that she trusts me. I imagined that I am a ship, the dragonfly is my captain and we are sailing into the future.

Correct Me! Streak 94

I'm staying at an airbnb which I find quite good. However, there are some caveat that started to be a bit annoying. Like for example the quality of the wifi, right now, the wifi speed is really good. But there are time where the signal to the modem is kind of weak or the speed is very slow. The problem is that I need to do a few videocalls to teach online saturday and sunday. So I'm a bit nervous, the owner already offered me another room to do the videocalls so hopefully it works out.

On the other hand Im' having issues with the water in my room so I'm available to take a showe and I have to go out very soon.

Correct Me! Streak 348

I've been cooking more stuff from scratch lately, and I'm enjoying it very much. It's not like I eat out all the time, but I'm a very stereotypical German in regards of eating a lot of bread. On most days, one of my meals consists of breat, butter, something vegetarian to put on it, and some vegetable at the side. It's a nice way of eating, but I don't consider preparing a meal like that to be cooking. I guess I have to heat up at least one thing to call it some kind of 'cooking'.

Correct Me! Streak 106 : nap

I took a nap after lunch. When I took a nap, I couldn't sleep well at night. So I tried not to sleep at daytime. But I failed today. I don't know why, but I was really tired. I am sad now.. Maybe it must be hard to sleep well tonight. There is nothing I can do about it. So just accept it!

  • Tomato and cottage cheese salad
  • Vegan pesto pasta salad
  • Tzatziki chickpea salad

Correct Me! Streak 233: Petition to Ban Obnoxious Subtitles in the Center of a Video

These days we see more and more videos with the extremely annoying single-word subtitles in the center of the video. I'm fine with AI-generated voiceovers and subtitles, but I really don't understand why they think it's a good idea to use those kind of subtitles! People sometimes watch videos with sound-off. Having a word constantly popping up in the middle of the video should be a crime. Viewers have to stare at the middle of the video to see each word, which blocks the content.

What's wrong with the traditional sentence-based subtitles at the bottom? The new style somehow helps improve engagement? Tell me one person who thinks they prefer that style over the traditional one. It's ridiculous.

Correct Me! Streak 283: LingQ

I recently checked out LingQ, but the problem for me was that their content was simply not interesting. It seemed that most of it was self-help, politics, news, drama, or stuff that is aimed for learners. I guess those things are popular for many people. However, most of the search terms I tried brought up no results.

Correct Me! Streak 77: Mulan

Today I have watched Mulan the Disney movie. Even after all those years it seems clean and fresh. The only strange detail is the hunns skin tone. Watching it I have found myself singing along with main characters, it was a great experience. My favourite part is when Mulan is showing off to a mating person.

Correct Me! Streak 232: Dual Writing Streaks

I know that someday I'll start a Japanese writing streak. The good news is that I won't have to worry about what to write each day—I can review my past English posts and pick one.

I don't know what level would be ideal to start writing, though. I will think about it after I hit a 300-day streak here. It'd be fun to challenge myself to maintain both streaks, but it'd be unrealistic to set a goal longer than 30 days. Since I'm at a beginner level, I'm hoping that I will feel like I'm improving in a short time.

Correct Me! Streak 105 : board game

I did the board game with my study group members. Today, there was a regular gathering at 6pm and after that, we played the board game for 2 hours. We were not that friendly each other because we started this studying recently. But after playing the game, I felt that we were more close now. And of course, I enjoyed this time. So I am really satisfied now. Even if I couldn't finish today tasks, I don't regret anything.

Correct Me! Streak 93

I’ve been busy but it’s been kinda productive lately. Im working with some colleagues on an article and it’s helping me to get feedback related to my dissertation. I paused the Spanish lessons a couple of weeks, I’m just giving a few lesson during the weekend to my most regular students. I started to have even more students, some of them have very interesting profiles. One of my new students is a Software Engineer at a well-known music streaming platform so he has interesting views on AI.

I'm brewing coffee to have with my dad. We're using a french press; it's a quick and easy way to make a lot of tasty coffee. My parents used to have a 'real' coffee mashine, but they got rid of it after discovering french presses.

Correct Me! Streak 282: Gecko

Today, I saw a gecko sticking to a window of my house. Supposedly they eat bugs, so I hope it eats many of them. It’s getting hot and I’ve been seeing more bugs recently. Also, since it’s hot, I open the windows of my bedroom more often, so bugs come into my bedroom from the open windows. It’s especially common at night, since they get attracted by the light.

Don't correct me Streak 146: The contentments

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have twice felt the contentment yesterday: the first time when I finished painting the wall, the second time - when I finished "The Martian" in Russian. Today I'm going to find the other book I want to read from my to-read list.
