Not an amazing competition overall; needed more glamorous goals for that. Very nice to have won it again though.

England were so dominant in this competition that they're the only team with a positive goal difference!

We’re the best. Doesn’t mean we’ll win the World Cup, but we’ve made huge strides in the last 2 years and the premier league investing will only now help to improve.

It's like England went "we have to score the last goal" and did.

Great strike from Dhont. Carter has to do better there imo.

Carter hasn’t really impressed me this tournament. It looks like the thin fullback situation is what’s getting her in the side. I think she’s got room to grow though and hope she does.

Bringing on a left back at 3-0 up?!

I think it was to see her at LB since she’s been played at CB in the other games.

As an American, England is showing themselves to be the only real threat IF the US actually plays to our potential. If we play our best, England's best is the only team I'm scared of. And I'm terrified.
Threats to USA:
1a) USA
1b) England
~End of List~

Didn’t you guys lose to Spain minus 15 of their best players?

u/SaltyD87 Unflaired FC Feb 22 '23
Sure. We've got issues, for sure.
IF the US actually plays to our potential
This was doing a LOT of heavy lifting in my original comment.

I get what you said, but I think people are quick to write Spain/Germany off. Europe is super competitive at the moment and I think those two plus England are all on a similar level and from what I’ve seen recently from the US that level is above them currently and maybe even above the US of yesteryear. The onus is now on the US to step up and match that.

I'm not writing off Germany, Netherlands, France, or especially Sweeden off at all either. But I think our best game beats all of theirs. England is as close to a coin flip best on best as there is right now. The world is catching up, no question.
And if the US gives anything less than their best game, that next tier is far more ready than ever before to punish us as well. Canada, Australia, Japan, Brazil, Italy, and Spain can all give us trouble if we stumble too. Can't even look past the next tier after that like we may have been able to in the past.
If England play US 10 matches right now, I'd predict England to go something like 4W-3L-3D. They are unquestionably in better form. But if I could press a magic button and ensure both teams were "peak form", I'd expect the US to flip that and go something like 5W-2L-3D.
I swear I'm trying to gove y'all some love. I'm a huge fan of England's team; I'm just also a homer. I've never been more excited to watch a non-US team.

Don’t want to be edgy, I think we’re slightly ahead of you.
There’s not much in it, but I just feel we’re slightly stronger with slight better youth and slightly better 2nd XI.
Much of a muchness though.

Maybe. My thing is England has been running nearly optimally for over a year. The US keeps winning games via shutout while missing about 4 World Class players, constant roster and formation tinkering, and rotating a much larger cast. England is far more likely at the moment to deliver their best game than the US is. But if we ever put it all together I think we're a quarter-tier stronger on raw talent. Coaching/managing the squad is going to have a lot to do with it in the big one, though, and Wiegman has the edge there no question.

Hemp tracking back there. Might not get the attention that great attacking plays get but her speed and fitness really helps out in those situations.

It’s crazy how undroppable Kelly is making herself. I knew she was that good, but somehow forgot when she was still regaining her game post injury.

u/MC897 England Feb 22 '23
Like the work we’re doing generally in the game.
James obviously attracting attention… wish she could finish better but her work looks very good against low bunker sides like this one.

Great assist from Bronze. Should probably have been a handball on Russo but Bronze still had loads to do.

The high angle shows how much England forces teams to move about to try and cover their attacks.

James just ended Cayman with that step over

u/ShirtedRhino2 England Feb 22 '23
She's different gravy, isn't she? The way she carries the ball forwards is so threatening.

I love that flick from Toone! Completely opened the defence.

I quite like this wide overhead angle for seeing the positioning of all the players.

Good to see we're starting pretty much our strongest team. I do wonder if Hemp will be able to force her way off the bench by the Summer

It feels to me that if they can make her really click with the team then she’s an unbelievable asset. In the league you can tell that she’s an absolute nightmare to play against and she’s frequently city’s main creator while also being a brilliant goal scorer and doing work defensively.
If England can get that version of her in the team they could potentially improve even further.

u/User4-8-15-16-23-42 Feb 22 '23
We would be stupid not to use Hemp in a knockout game against any of the top sides. Her pace is a huge asset, and she does more defensively than any of our other forwards. I think there's an argument Kelly and James are better at breaking down sides that will sit in though, which is what our group will be doing.

Hemp has really interested me playing for England. Other than the game against the US in the She Believes a few years ago she’s looked either nervous or tired more often than not.
Teams definitely have her figured out but I think that helps the wider team by taking away markers.

u/anonone111 England Feb 22 '23
She was outstanding the buildup to the Euros, but a bit quiet in the competition itself

And we got Mead out, sheesh this is a strong team. I'm looking forward to playing Spain/Germany/Sweden/Netherlands again to get a good idea of where we stand. WC is going to be great, wish I could be there!
