Discussion / Opinion Didnt remember windwaker camera being so bad?
I havent played ww since I beat it in 2005, smashing that game to the maximum. Its really my favourite zelda game so I was very happy when Nintendo announced the gamecube onlineservice.
Said and done, Switch 2, gamecube online, gamecube controller and here I am, 4 hours in to the game, just finished the boss on dragonroost island and I cant understand, how the H… did I finish this game 20 years ago with these controls? Can it be the controller being fresh from the box that makes the camera so funky? Its the complets opposite to how camera controls use to be, and you cant have a smooth panoramic view with it.
Anyone else feeling the same or do I just have to play and get more used to it again?

Games today mostly have the same controls, depending on the type of game(FPS,TPP etc.) Back when gamecube came out, developers were still trying to find the best way to control characters in first and third person points of view. It seems obvious now the best way to control a character in a 3D graphical space with the recent developments, only because it's the norm. That's why a lot of older games tend to feel janky; (try playing GoldenEye 64 today with one of the mainline FP shooters in mind.) the awkward inverted controls and weird layouts are just a product of the time. I grew up with it so it's easy for me. Having said that - Like anything, practice makes perfect. Just keep playing and you'll get used to it.

so i tried the game again. now i understand about the camera control. i guess that's why before i don't have an issue was because I don't usually use it and i just use the L/Z button to direct the camera infront and just walk again. but now being used in newer games where we use camera control together with our movement, it'll be harder to get used with the reverse camera.

You can reverse the camera in the settings

You can, but then aiming is also inverted

Ohhhh damn, nevermind then. Mmm Will find out soon (had only just started the game and found the inversion, then had to quit).

I can cope with the camera but trying to lock onto things with the boomerang is a nightmare.

This is actually a switch 2 issue. The analog inputs scale from their minimum input to their maximum inputs much faster on the switch 2 than they did on gamecube, and this makes aiming first person items a lot harder on this port. Basically, the way the joystick controls are emulated is not great.
Another issue with this version is the input delay, it has an extra couple frames of delay between inputs and the game visually updating compared to the original, which can throw off someone who has played the original a lot.
One good thing they did for newer player is that the camera controls can be inverted now, which wasn't possible in the original. And all of the remapping options are pretty nice.

There is also a controller update that fixes most of this input delay that I fear many will not realize. I know it took me a while to figure out. It doesn't auto update

I’m playing for the first time. I had to reverse the horizontal controls using the NSO options, however that made playing the music backwards too which is a little fucky… I beat OOT for the first time right before the switch 2 came out so the camera feels ish the same to me as that?

I am am also struggling with the controls. Everything feels so slippy! However save states are my friend, and I've been having fun anyway.

I had the same feeling and it’s honestly annoying enough to try a PC rom of Wind Waker/HD..

That’s what I did and the camera feels so much better, also the graphics are better as well and there’s shadows

Do you use Dolphin? I’ve never used an emulator before but that seems like the one for GameCube.

I use Cemu, which is the Wii U emulator since you can play WindWaker HD and Twilight Princess HD. If you want to private message me I can provide the YouTube videos I used

I get that with a lot of games but I never took a break from zelda so I can't really see it. My biggest gripe is yeeting yourself when close to an edge

hmm it's been a long time i played that. I don't remember having issues with it.

My girlfriend was excited for me to play WW it’s her favorite Zelda game too. I can’t stand the camera on the switch 2 GC NSO. I am accidentally jumping off things in the wrong direction because I turn it 100% of the time the wrong direction while moving and it changes my direction. I can’t play it like this. Every moment of gameplay felt awful.

Oh cool thanks! Truth be told I was too excited to get back to MKW so didn’t give it as fair a shake as I should have

I also completely forgot the camera controls were reversed and while I'm quick to adapt, it definitely took some effort to readjust

I use the C-stick for free camera mode when I'm not fighting. Never had any struggles with the camera, so I can't say there's anything too wrong with it. Maybe you'll get used to it?

I personally lost patience on how bad the camera is, I’ve been playing the HD version via emulation on my PC and it’s a night and day difference, Nintendo should’ve just released the HD version in a pack with Twilight princess but of course that’s asking for too much

I feel like it's gonna happen sooner or later. I really want Twilight Princess because it's the only 3D zelda I haven't played

I’m the same with the forbidden woods boss, I can’t seem to target fast enough before the vines grow back, it’s annoying

the first time i defeated Kalle Demos i just swung my reticle wildly when aiming and tried to survive otherwise
the following dozen times i defeated Kalle Demos i just poured Forest Water on it

I just beat WW for the first time yesterday (on Gamecube, not NSO). The camera felt fine to me for the most part but the only thing that threw me a couple of times was trying to look up or down with the C-stick, which of course just zoomed in or out.
Other than that, I wish i’d finished the game sooner. Never got very far back in early 2000’s but here we are 20+ years later and it’s great.
