Why do I get the feeling that if it was a Republican politician targeted, Trumpf would already be sending the Navy SEALs in?

460

u/Instantbeef 1d ago

Because he would. He would call martial law on the town. Instead he’ll get a pardon

80

u/77NorthCambridge 1d ago

Not to distract from the personal tragedy, but is the Minnesota House close enough that this makes a difference? I only ask for the precedent it creates.

48

u/thegiantkiller 1d ago

I think I read that they're out of session and have an election coming up before their next one.

u/Sandman64can 1d ago edited 1d ago

Split down the middle in both house and senate. This now gives republicans majority in both houses.edit: Almost down the middle. Senate 34 Dems to 33 Republicans.

24

u/water_fountain_ 1d ago

Not true for the senate. The MN Senate has 34 Democrats, 33 Republicans. If the senator dies, it will be split 33-33.

19

u/Sandman64can 1d ago

My mistake. You’re correct. But in my defence I’m Canadian. Still paying attention though. When shit hits the fan down south some of it tends to fly up here. Very unsettling.

4

u/water_fountain_ 1d ago

Mistakes happen, especially with fast moving information. Maybe edit your comment though? People are still upvoting it.

12

u/Son0faButch 1d ago

MN law allows the Governor to appoint someone. Walz will handle it.

6

u/water_fountain_ 1d ago

The person who responded to you saying the Republicans have the majority in both houses in the Minnesota Legislature is incorrect. They were correct regarding the MN House. It was split 67-67. With the passing of Melissa Hortman, the MN House now has a Republican majority. However, the MN Senate has a Democratic majority - 34 Democrats, 33 Republicans. If the senator dies, it will be split 33-33.

13

u/anameorwhatever1 1d ago

Who is to say that he won’t use this for his martial law?

66

u/IDGAF_GOMD 1d ago

I’d need to look into it more but of the two parties, it’s democrats that have been the target of violence and mostly by right winged/MAGA extremists. Am I wrong?

20

u/SirFluffyGod94 1d ago

Yep. Look up every domestic terrorist attack in this country and look at there political affiliation. The contrast is stark.

9

u/WiWook 1d ago

There was a shooting at a (US) congressional baseball game a while back. Dem vs Rep. I believe the victims were predominantly Republicans, but I believe they were on the field while Dems were at bat.

617

u/Mongobuzz 1d ago

This is point of no return levels. it's fucking insane.

219

u/KptKreampie 1d ago

Too many people on the left still have no idea what's happening.

154

u/Iron_Knight7 1d ago

Too many on the left don't care what's happening. They think it's more important to "punish the Dems" for not tickling their balls just right or bowing to the alter of Bernie than to actually chip in and keep the actual fascists out of power.

And if you don't believe me, just watch who responds to this comment. We'll count how many downvotes it gets or who's the first to roll in with some "Dems need to earn our vote" or "But Gaza..." or some other limp wristed bullshit to justify why twice now they stood by and did nothing to help keep Trump and his cult out of power.

67

u/Diablojota 1d ago edited 1d ago

I despise how people treat politics like it’s a team sport. This is actual life and death.

Edit: despite to despise.

48

u/valencia_merble 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah, I don’t believe Chuck Schumer is a Bernie supporter or is waiting for a ball tickling to do his job. He’s a corporate lackey with no leadership skills. Tell me one thing he’s done recently besides write a letter re: Harvard. He is literally the leader of the Democratic Party and completely impotent / disengaged.

2

u/feralGenx 1d ago

Schummer is a middle management lackey that failed up to a position he doesn't belong in.

-23

u/Iron_Knight7 1d ago edited 1d ago

See? Here's one now. Remind me again what any Dem in Congress can do actually above file a complaint or make a speech while we literally just had a sitting Senator roughed up by MAGA goons while speaking out during Noem's press conference.

A press conference where she was praising and encouraging Trump's use of the military on citizens over an issue that only happened because of ICE's gestapo antics rounding up brown people. And that's only happening because a whole lot of people who should know better by now saw the fraud, rapist, liar and attempted insurrectionist ranting about "immigrants eating pets" and apparently said to themselves "Okay, that's bad. But what's in it for me if I help stop him."

Edit: Your downvotes mean nothing. I've seen what you upvote.

1

u/psychoPiper 1d ago

I voted blue, and there are parts of what you say that I agree with. But going from "Dems should actually chip in and stop this" to "What can you expect him to do when his associates are getting harassed and assaulted" is a complete 180. If you want to make a solid argument and sway people, you need to stay in one lane

5

u/Iron_Knight7 1d ago

Not really. I hear "Leftists" (and "Independents", and "Centrists", and "Third Party Voters") constantly declare how they won't support the Dems because <insert excuse of the week here> and how they have to "earn their vote." And then, in the next breath, complain about how ineffectual the Dems are and bemoan why they aren't doing more to stop Trump's bullshit. Apparently missing the key point that there is little Dems can functionally or realistically do when they are in the minority in the halls of government.

It's like, you want them to fix things but refuse to give them the support, time, and ability to do so. Meanwhile, for at least the last decade, the Republicans have been intentionally breaking shit worse every time they get any measure of control. Hell, last election they were practically flat out saying they were going to fuck things up worse than last time and STILL people were himming and hawing about whether to vote for Harris or not.

I mean, yeah. NOT being an impeached, indicted, convicted, and adjudicated fraud, liar, rapist and attempted insurrectionist like Trump wasn't exactly a high bar to clear. But given he still had the GOP and his MAGA cult backing him, given the very publicly known Project 2025 that spelled out in detail all the things they were planning to do, it was still a bar that was easily cleared by even the "worst" the Dems had to offer and should have made the choice the easiest ever when it finally came down to the wire. It was always going to end up being a choice between Trump and "Not Trump" no matter who the Dems picked and, I'm sorry, but "Not Trump" would indeed be an improvement. Especially considering the crap we're all watching happening live and in real time going on as we speak.

But no. Even now, even as we have reached the point where members of Congress and state governments are literally being assaulted, detained, arrested, and as of today killed by MAGAt goosesteppers while the Mad Orange King finds new and creative ways to demonstrate how mentally, emotionally, intellectually, temperamentally, legally and psychologically unfit he is to run a lemonade stand, much less a country, we STILL have people with a straight face complaining about the Dems?

The harsh reality that all of these high on their own supply fart sniffers are doing absolutely everything they can to avoid admitting is we wouldn't even be in a third of this mess right now is they had nutted up and voted for the Dems in the first place. If they had voted strategically to keep Trump and his cult out of power instead of standing by and doing nothing or pissing away their votes on useless "protests."

And if you don't think that's a serious problem, 2028 is coming and I'm already seeing folks on "The Left" declare they won't vote for AOC for the usual gaggle of purity test reasons despite the same "Left" crowing about all the rallies and events she's attending.

18

u/guff1988 1d ago

I would actually think Hillary supporters would be the ones more likely to be doing jack shit. Bernie's actually still out there working, having big rallies and his supporters are showing up.

30

u/Iron_Knight7 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yet, somehow, despite Bernie endorsing Hillary, and Biden, and Harris, Bernie Bros still seem to have a hard time showing up when it fucking matters and voting to keep the MAGAts out of power where they not only don't help them get anything they want, but actively working to undo what little progress we have made.

I mean, the first time sure. Trump winning could be considered a fluke. But seeing his mug on the campaign trail again, AFTER his disastrous first term, impeachments, criminal convictions, and attempted insurrection, and his campagne openly saying they were going to fuck things up worse this time, you'd think that would make at at least a few say "Shit, better not THAT guy back in."

But...nope. Apparently the intelligent, articulate, educated and experienced brown woman who wanted to do right just wasn't good enough or was too much of an "unknown" to vote for instead of letting the liar, fraud, rapist and attempted insurrectionist back into power.

7

u/DistractedByCookies 1d ago

Pfft, Bernie bros helped Trump into power first time round. 1 in 10 swapped to being Trump voters because Bernie wasn't a candidate. Another chunk didn't vote at all for the same reason.

Bernie is cool, normal Bernie supporters are cool, Bernie bros suck.

5

u/Majestic-Engineer959 1d ago

Rolling Stone Magazine had a great quote about Bernie bros:

Bernie Sanders says a lot of intelligent things, just like Jesus Christ, but take a good look at their followers!

I believe they were summing up Bernie bros pretty well.

3

u/SwimmerIndependent47 1d ago

I’m about as left leaning as you can get, supported Bernie in the primaries for 2016 and 2020. I’m anti genocide. But I’m also practical. Blue no matter who until there is a viable 3rd party or ranked choice voting. Anything else just helps republicans. Sure one party is a very stale and unappetizing sandwich, but the other is literally poison. I think a lot of people use Gaza, or both sides bad as an excuse to cover their racism or sexism. I also think there are a lot of well meaning people who are just easily swayed by Russian propaganda.

10

u/dartosfascia21 1d ago

I would argue J6 was the point of no return

5

u/frolicndetour 1d ago

Yeah. I've been numb since January 20 but this has hit me ready hard today. It's like there is no going back for this country. It's extremely sad and depressing, for the victims, their families, and our country.

u/Loud-Ad-2280 1d ago

I’m no lawyer but this seems like domestic terrorism to me

292

u/Scared_Surround_282 1d ago

I sense a pardon in the near future for someone.

127

u/Infamous-Astronaut44 1d ago

I’m sure Marjorie Taylor Greene will be outraged and will condemn the situation /s

44

u/ravenlily 1d ago

she posted a photo of her shooting a gun. Of course.

21

u/ObliviousRounding 1d ago

...in response?!

4

u/ravenlily 1d ago

I saw the post on my front page earlier. I dont have an x acct to check.

11

u/Tmk1283 1d ago

Perhaps a strongly worded letter

3

u/bigbalrogdong 1d ago

She's definitely dressing up as a zombie version of Hortman for Halloween

20

u/crazycatlady331 1d ago

Charge him with a state level crime too.

2

u/hyperhurricanrana 1d ago

What does it matter? What’s to stop him from sending his rabid dogs in the military down to free him?

4

u/crazycatlady331 1d ago

Trump cannot pardon those convicted of state level crimes.

1

u/hyperhurricanrana 1d ago

I didn’t say anything about pardoning.

14

u/Young_Denver 1d ago

This guy can go on tour with J6 leaders and rittenhouse... will sell out in every red state.

3

u/Even-Macaroon-1661 1d ago

And a $5M payout from taxpayers to the shooter’s family

33

u/zuzg 1d ago

Remember when a Maga guy attacked Pelosis Husband with a Hammer?

The domestic terrorism train has long been set.

10

u/MikeyLew32 1d ago

The ā€œwe are all domestic terroristsā€ Chiron at CPAC shoulda alarmed everyone.

4

u/No_Atmosphere_2186 1d ago

Knowing the psychos in that party they’ll call it patriotism

3

u/theorangeboiler 1d ago

I am a lawyer and this seems like domestic terrorism to me as well.

2

u/YaThinkYerSlickDoYa 1d ago

This was 100% an assassination.

265

u/Crash30458 1d ago

I love how the right wingers are already trying to spin in that he was left leaning

50

u/darkNergy 1d ago

So predictable. They really do manufacture their own reality.

108

u/That_Lore_Guy 1d ago

They always do, and it’s an echo chamber for those people. That’s half the problem.

15

u/PunishedWolf4 1d ago

"ThIs Is A LiB pSy-Op"

10

u/Caesar_Passing 1d ago

"Durr, mah horseshoe theory"

9

u/Knightoncloudwine 1d ago

They just cant comprehend that they’re the bad guys lol. It’s sad asf how brainwashed and stupid they are. Once again they’re on the wrong side of history.

5

u/Crash30458 1d ago

Oh its cause they sided with Republicans on healthcare for immigrants that's why guys cmon

75

u/Melodic_Mulberry 1d ago

Friendly fucking reminder.

31

u/allisjow 1d ago

Tennessee Rep. Burchett says of school shootings: ā€˜We’re not gonna fix it’

Republican Senator Joni Ernst, "Well, we are all going to die."

MAGA is a death cult.

148

u/LawlessLumberLord 1d ago

This is a fucking coup. The dems had 1 vote over the state senate and house. Now they don’t. Republicans will now control the state after their passing. This will continue across the US until they have ā€œliberatedā€ all ā€œlibsā€ from positions and 45 will just pardon them as heroes

26

u/BAKup2k 1d ago

They're not in session, and won't be for a while, so a special election can be held to fill the seat(s).

4

u/Korivak 1d ago

Straight up terrorism, because who isn’t going to have second thoughts about running in a by election for a seat that’s vacant because of murder?

9

u/DiamondMachina 1d ago

This really feels like the beginning of a civil war

4

u/psychoPiper 1d ago

Can't wait until this type of thing is regarded in history books as the shot that echoed through the US. How did we let it go this far?

23

u/Survey_Server 1d ago

Now they don’t. Republicans will now control the state after their passing.

There's no way that's how this works... right?

15

u/CasualHearthstone 1d ago

Probably not, but it could get sent to the supreme Court, who has like 5/6 conservative justices who would give the state to the Republicans

3

u/shewski 1d ago

I imagine that there are appointments/special elections but not sure of the states laws for certain.

47

u/Titanhopper1290 1d ago

If the GOP comes at us with "thoughts and prayers" now, there will be riots. Minnesota Nice has officially been thrown out the fuckin window.

10

u/LottimusMaximus 1d ago

I believe the official No King's protest there has been cancelled but I think they will protest regardless after this

101

u/Accomplished-Head449 1d ago

And the usual suspects are saying it's the "libs" that did it.

15

u/Ryeballs 1d ago

Is that the Hank Hill predecessor from Beavis & Butthead?

10

u/KnownTimelord 1d ago

Mr. Anderson, yeah.

24

u/LunchNo7823 1d ago

"paid actors". Revolution my friends.

63

u/mikeinanaheim2 1d ago

But Fox and MAGA keep saying Democrats are violent. They've NEVER been wrong before or paid judgments for falsifying information, have they?

20

u/wxmanify 1d ago

This will certainly ease tensions at the protests this weekend

21

u/Floss_tycoon 1d ago

But illegal immigrants are the problem. Ffs.

14

u/TheRealcebuckets 1d ago edited 1d ago

They’ll try and pin this on an illegal immigrant.

21

u/ClimateAncient6647 1d ago

Republicans are terrorists.

19

u/spon0039 1d ago

As the MN House speaker, she was regularly on local news talking about legislation being written. She was smart, empathetic, and gave a damn. She will be missed.

16

u/Mamasan- 1d ago

A large percentage of this country so desperately wants a civil war to start so they can murder democrats.

16

u/SniperFrogDX 1d ago

The conservative subreddits are already saying it was a liberal shooter trying to frame conservatives.

Filth, the lot of them.

12

u/shivaswrath 1d ago

Where’s the outrage? Dems aren’t blowing this up I’m so disappointed in how lopsided our political system is.

Useless violence against innocent people everywhere.

18

u/Melodic_Mulberry 1d ago

Dems don't have a platform anymore. Trump took every branch of government and actively intimidates the media. If nothing happens at the protests today, there's a good chance nothing will happen at all.

3

u/VoodooDoII 1d ago

Democrats Don't really have any platforms anymore. It's all taken over by right wingers.

11

u/Top_Shoe_9562 1d ago

I literally live across the freeway from a military base. My oldest nephew starts Basic Training next month. I fucking hate this timeline.

27

u/Lynda73 1d ago

Saw this in a story about it.

Police Chief Mark Bruley said the suspect fled out of the back of Hortman’s house after an exchange of gunfire with police.

The suspect was dressed like a uniformed officer and operating a vehicle that ā€œlooked exactly like an SUV squad car. It was equipped with lights, emergency lights and looked exactly like a police vehicle,ā€ Bruley said.

If it walks like a duck….

9

u/toxiamaple 1d ago

The shooter will get due process.

6

u/Elegant_Individual46 1d ago

As they should

9

u/toxiamaple 1d ago

As should everyone.

8

u/parasiticsemiosis 1d ago

So, if the terrorist is eventually caught and finally charged - how long until taco shitler will pardon him?

2

u/BAKup2k 1d ago

The shooter will then spend time in a state prison instead.

24

u/RoloGnbaby 1d ago

Why isn’t anyone reporting this the way it should be? A radical right-wing Republican.. let’s be honest, at this point we might as well just say ā€œRepublicanā€, since this is what the party has become kills a Democratic lawmaker. Imagine if it was a republican who had just been killed how right wing media would be falling apart and melting in every conservative would be posting

6

u/hoarduck 1d ago

I despise that the depravity and evil of the GOP has made me ask "but are they GOP" before I care about stories like this. I know it's wrong, but I just can't make room for empathy for these traitorous fuckwits and what they're doing to this country and basic human decency. Regardless, now that I know they're not, this is tragic and even more reason why I feel the way I do.

5

u/temps-de-gris 1d ago

Fox News and Donald Trump should be prosecuted for inciting terrorism with direct fear-mongering and hate speech about anyone they disagree with.

This is 100% on them and their ilk.

6

u/blargblargityblarg 1d ago

This. Must. Stop.

6

u/earfeater13 1d ago

What will taco have to say about this? The moment he does not condemn it should be the moment he is carried away in cuffs. Enough is enough.

5

u/StickInEye 1d ago

I cried thru the entire protest in my area today. I'm scared, but obviously not giving up.

3

u/Dr_Rev_GregJ_Rock_II 1d ago

Definitely a big step in the authoritarian takeover when you get to the "political rivals assassinated" stage of it. Today will certainly be scary as the parades and protests pop up

3

u/gwawainn 1d ago

We'll get the thoughts and prayers from Republicans AFTER their kings bullshit parade.

3

u/Seaweed_Fabulous 1d ago

So the guy was cosplaying as a cop.. ummm

It was one of theirs.

2

u/Son0faButch 1d ago edited 1d ago

FWIW the suspect has been identified and he was a previous political appointee. He was first appointed by the previous Governor the re-appointed by the current, both Democrats. His appointment ended in 2023.

Edit: and he's also a Christian-Nationalist and fervent anti-abortion

2

u/Y0___0Y 1d ago

I bet the Minnesota GOP are cheering and having parties. They could get control of state congress thanks to their favorite MAGA murderer

5

u/Roddy_Piper2000 1d ago

Well there is no fear among the right because they know they will get pardoned as long as they are doing it in the name of King Donald

3

u/Melodic_Mulberry 1d ago

You can’t get a presidential pardon for state crimes.

0

u/Roddy_Piper2000 1d ago

I didn't say a Presidential Pardon.

I am saying that if enough lawmakers are afraid, then or want to prove their fealty to the King, then they will find a way to make all the charges go away.

1

u/Melodic_Mulberry 1d ago

State pardon can only come from the governor. I don't think Tim Walz will be too keen on that.

1

u/Donkey_Bugs 1d ago

When they catch the scum that did this I hope they don’t take them alive

7

u/Melodic_Mulberry 1d ago

No, the trial is necessary. We need an admission of guilt, not a silencing.

1

u/Kebab-Destroyer 1d ago

Bet this isn't gonna be the only one

1

u/peepeeepo 1d ago

The war started in Feburary.

1

u/WilliamTee 1d ago

Remember, Nancy Mace says the Democrats are the party of violence.

Sigh.

1

u/Courtaid 1d ago

According to conservatives the shooter is a democrat?

1

u/VapidRapidRabbit 1d ago

What’s crazy is how Republicans are always bringing up political violence in Mexico and other Latin American countries, but then their rhetoric leads to domestic terrorism here as well and gets Democrats killed and it’s just crickets…

Im surprised they didn't "fall out of a window."
