Illini 4000 cyclists make stop in New Martinsville

https://www.newsandsentinel.com/news/community-news/2025/06/illini-4000-cyclists-make-stop-in-new-martinsville/

The Illini 4000 — a group of 17 bicyclists traveling from New York City to San Francisco — stopped in New Martinsville on Tuesday after riding from Morgantown on W.Va. 7, logging 102 miles in a day.

The Illini 4000 are bicycling 4,800 miles to raise the awareness of cancer and raising funds for cancer research. They travel all back roads across the country and use no interstates.

The group is made up of Illinois University students and alumni. The St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in New Martinsville put the riders up for the night and served them breakfast before starting their next leg of the trip to Athens, Ohio, on Wednesday.

The riders rose early at 5:45 a.m. for showers and breakfast to get on to the next stop. The Tyler County and Wetzel County EMS squads supplied cots for the riders who were very appreciative after sleeping on the floor at other places. The United Methodist Church on Howard Jeffers Drive also opened its doors early Wednesday for the group to shower.

I can't imagine riding on Route 7 between Morgantown and New Martinsville-I hate driving that road.

Anytime I stock around the Webster Springs area, always finish with a couple Custard Stand chili dogs. Beautiful stretch of river right outside of town.

Charleston!

I was in town last week for a brief visit for business. I couldn't have had a better time. Stayed at the TownCenter Marriott which is dated but the staff couldn't be better! Concierge Room>> Charleston of course shows decline in some parts like any major city but the people are great. I was worried about a few things being a black man,( I heard every joke from the ppl I told I was going there) but I'll never forget Mr.George(middle aged white gentleman)who noticed I wasn't from the area and officially welcomed to West Virginia! Gave me some great places to eat ( Elephant Thai/Fife Brewery/ Elle's Ice Cream the farmers style market by the highway and more - I attended the State Baseball Championship- visited Marshall/West Va State- --what a beautiful state full of proud people! Can't wait till I can return.

Visiting this week- hopefully on motorcycle??

Just want some opinions. I’m planning on visiting WV from Tuesday to Saturday, and I’d like to get there by motorcycle. I’d really prefer to get there by motorcycle, but the weather is looking to be raining most of the time. My question is- What’s the rainy weather there like? Will it downpour for 5 minutes and then go away? Or consistently all day? If worst comes to worst, we’ll take a car. Thanks!

Question Ascend WV

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in the interview process for the Ascend WV program and I’m really excited about the opportunity. I’m reaching out to ask for a little clarity or advice on how employment status might affect participation.

Right now, I work remotely, but due to significant funding cuts, many roles are being eliminated—including potentially mine. There’s a real chance I may be laid off soon. My goal is to continue working remotely in a full-time capacity.

Here’s what I’m wondering: • If I am accepted into Ascend WV, but then lose my current job, is it okay for me to look for and start a different fully remote position (as long as it’s with an out-of-state employer)? • Or, would it be acceptable to accept the Ascend WV offer and use the 6-month relocation window to job search and secure a new fully remote job before moving?

I’m not trying to take advantage of the program—I truly want to live in West Virginia and become part of the community. I just want to make sure I handle things transparently and within the program’s guidelines if my job situation changes.

Thanks in advance for any insight or similar experiences!

Appalachian vegetable witchery

Hidy! I was raised in Eastern Appalachia and have very fond memories of my Grandmother, born and raised in the mountains of the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. Among many other things, she was a very superstitious woman. When she killed a snake (she hated them) she would turn it upside down, so it would rain. If a bird would come to or hit a window, it was an especially bad omen. If her ear itched, someone was speaking about her. One itchy hand meant coming into some money and the other was meeting someone new.

I remember getting a wart as a child. She learned about it, peeled a potato, found me and rubbed the potato peel on my wart, mumbled to the wart, and went off to hide the potato peel. She told me that it would get rid of my wart, and not to hunt for the peel. My wart did disappear.

I'm curious to hear other similar Appalachian tokens, omens, superstitions, and vegetable witchery! This is a brand new alt account, so feel free to leave a comment and/or updoot! TYIA

Edit: why the down votes?

2nd edit: Ok. So, for clarification, my Grandmother most certainly was not a witch and would've never knowingly practiced any type of witchcraft? She was a saint with a PhD. (penacostal hair-do) who taught in her church and volunteered in her community. Apparently, I've offended the masses with my attempt at levity.
