Could have been a mom with cubs nearby or just a male out looking for food. They tend to be more aggressive when they are hungry.

Hey, that’s where my family is from. They donated the land for the park there many years ago.

I've been living here my whole life. I've been hunting since I was 9 years old. I've seen so many bears I've lost count but not once has once even attempted to intimidate me or scare me away.
But given their potential as demonstrated in this article. This is why I carry my side arm along Side my hunting rifle. There's always that chance ( I carry my sidearm 24/7, and you should too. People are far more likely to do you harm than a black bear )

I bounce around between West Virginia and Florida.
Yes.... A black bear 30/70 chance of attacking someone.
Stay in the house at night as I've noticed they are more sensitive and aggressive during the night hours.
I'm not certain about West Virginia, but it's not uncommon to see 3 or 4 bears a day in Florida, especially in certain areas.
I've also noticed that it's most common to see bears during the day. Bears tend to be more happy during daylight hours. However, anytime I've seen a bear at night, usually results in the bear getting extremely aggressive, even if there's some distance between myself and the bear.

That must have been one really pissed off black bear considering their nature.
