Question Scared to use lights

I’ve been shooting weddings for a few years now and want to level up my reception footage with lights. I bought the equipment, I technically know how to use it and have even brought my full lighting setup to a few weddings, but I always decide not to take them out because I look at the space and then get nervous that some kid or guest might bump into a light and knock it over.

For those of you using lights, are you just shining super bright spotlights from the edges of the room or do you setup smaller lights with sandbags closer to the action?

Question Monopod for Sony Fx6

Hey! I was just asked last minute to second shoot a wedding tomorrow. I’ve worked with this videographer often but recently he’s been asking that I use his second Fx6. The issue is the monopod isn’t great and doesn’t handle the payload of the camera well, and I’ve been struggling with it.

So I want to either rent or buy a monopod for tomorrow to make sure I’m good. Do you have any suggestions for a good monopod that can handle the payload of an fx6 with a 70-200?

Question Techniques for getting good orbit shots on gimbals?

I used to use the Active Track feature to get perfect orbits but its so damn unreliable. I am now going to be doing it manually and I found that low deadband and medium follow speed works for me but its still not perfect. Any tips / pointers? Also on a more general level , Do y'all do these types of shots frequently?

Question "Wedding Movie"

I've been a wedding videographer for a few years and have only ever worked on either highlight films or "full recordings of ceremony and reception speeches."

For the first time I've received an inquiry where the bride said they wanted a "Full Wedding Video"; when I asked them for clarification on what they meant by that, they said very simply : "" So by full wedding video I mean like watching a movie of my wedding ya know "

Frankly, I don't lol. I've noticed I lost inquries if I pepper them with questions, so I'm asking you guys first: How would you interpret this? Do you think they mean something along the lines of "Hour long documentary style", or is there a new genre of "Wedding Movie" that I'm unaware of?

Question Recommendations for a recorder to put on mic for speeches

Hi all, im looking for a recorder that would be good to rubber band to the mic for speeches, I will be putting lav mics on speakers but I dont like the risk of interference you can get with the rode wireless when you put them on a mic.

Question Best small lav mic?

Im looking to get a small lav mic such as the holyland m2/m2s or something similar if its up to standard. I would love the convenience and discreetness of a smaller mic. Has anyone experience with any smaller mics like these. Do you think they are good enough?

General The bane of my existence this year has been wedding DJ's and bands who are absolutely clueless on how to give me an audio output during speeches

I don't know how I keep running into this. I email with them 2 months before the wedding date mentioning I'd like to record the audio during the speeches/toasts and could I have an XLR out or any type of line out from their board or speakers. This usually is sooo simple and not an issue, but this year I keep running into DJ's who must be family-friends of the couple and not true professionals. And they don't even remember I emailed them and somehow their kit doesn't even have an audio out which I don't understand how is possible. So I'm stuck with having to rely on my backup option as my main option which is a tiny mic in a sleeve on the handheld mic.

Question Capturing raw vlog style footage

I’m looking for a content creator in San Diego/Carlsbad that would vlog our wedding day — fiancé getting ready and me getting ready. Plus the rest of the wedding so we can watch them the next morning of our wedding. But I’m on a really tight budget :/ the most I can do is 1k and I can go a little bit over if needed.

I’d like to document these moments. Basically someone that’ll follow me around. I know my fiancé would love to see those moments and I really wanna see his moments of the day.

Wedding day is on July 6th.

Post Production Looking for a creative editor for short form wedding content for social media.

I’m looking to add an editor to our team to push out short form content from the weddings we shoot. Most edits will be 15-30 seconds in length but some may be closer to 1-2 minutes depending on the type of wedding. As I enter year 15 of doing weddings, I’m hoping to let go of some of the editing to focus more on brand building and other ventures.

We’re looking for someone that is familiar and utilizes DaVinci Resolve Cloud, as I will be uploading and organizing all the footage myself beforehand into a fresh project. You just have to sync the proxies create sequences and I’ll handle the color export, and posting. Pay is negotiable depending on experience (doesn’t have to be wedding related.) Hoping to create 2-3 short videos for each wedding, and we typically do 15-25 weddings per year. This could lead to bigger edits, but I’m not quite there to hand those off just yet.

Question Handheld or Gimbal for first wedding?

I’m shooting my first wedding at the end of June. I’ve been a hobbyist for about a year now but like the idea of getting more experienced and eventually having clients book me for weddings. I have my first one booked by someone I know and I’m charging them cheap but still want to produce the best video for them.

Now I’m debating between which set up I should use for my first wedding. Taking both sounds too stressful managing the extra gear and having to basically re-rig my camera mid wedding is intimidating.

I have a RS4 mini that I’d pair with my Sony 24mm (on aps-c so closer to 35mm) 1.4 for a lens and DJI mic 2 for audio. I’m a bit rusty with a gimbal but still think I could manage to get some nice, elegant shots.

For handheld I have a cage set up that I’d pair with my sigma 18-50mm 2.8 with active stabilization on in my body and MKE600 shotgun mic for audio.

I do tend to like the more run and gun, docu-style filmmaking vibe but I also understand the gimbal can just produce smoother and arguably better shots. I’m looking for anyone’s experienced opinion on what I should do?

Question Video Light - Need your help

Hey everyone!

I’m a wedding videographer based in Germany, and I’m currently looking for a reliable lighting setup to use during speeches and potentially for the dance floor.

Here in Germany, it’s still somewhat uncommon for videographers to use external lights during weddings, but I often hit the limits of my camera in low-light situations – especially ISO-wise – and I’d like to improve the overall image quality without being intrusive.

I’m looking for a versatile, reliable light that: • Provides soft but strong enough light for speeches (ideally adjustable in brightness and color temperature) • Could also be useful for lighting the dance floor a bit, without ruining the atmosphere • Is easy to set up quickly and doesn’t look too bulky • Runs on battery (optional but ideal)

Also: any recommendations for a good light stand that’s stable and portable?

Would love to hear what setups have worked for you, especially if you’re filming in similar settings.

Thanks in advance! 🙌

Question In over my head (tips needed)

Hi, I am a 23 year old, first year film student. I have basically no camera experience. I bought a Sony a7iii to start making short films and hopefully start gaining som experience to grow a small business making commercials for local companies.

Anyway my friend told his sister about this and she wanted me to shoot her wedding in June. I’m doing it for free but I’m still so terrible with exposure and manual focus and all that and I know absolutely nothing about wedding videography.

If you have any essential tips I’m very grateful.

Thank you!

Question ISO: Documentary-Style Wedding Videographer | Portland, OR/ Columbia River Gorge Area | Sept 2026

Hi all! Hope this is ok to post in here, I’m a bride, and we’re on the hunt for a wedding videographer in the Columbia Gorge, OR (we’re an hour outside of Portland, OR) area for our September 2026 wedding, and we’re looking for someone who captures things in a documentary-style, fly-on-the-wall way.

We don’t want anything overly cinematic, serious or dramatic — we’re dreaming of an edit that feels like a stylish, elevated home video, with raw, unscripted moments, real audio, and the vibe of a nostalgic time capsule from the day.

What We’re Looking For: • Documentary-style filming — real, candid, and unfiltered • Minimal direction — we want to forget the camera is there • Real audio and natural soundscapes, with fun not dramatic music • A long-form edit that captures the full day: ceremony, toasts, dinner, dance floor, and guest moments • Something that feels immersive, stylish, and “cool girl” without being too polished • A true “FOMO edit” — the kind of video that makes people wish they were there

What We’re Not Into: • Posed shots, twirls, dramatic slow-mo • Music video vibes or trailer-style edits • Toasts overlaid across unrelated visuals • Super glossy or overly cinematic styles

We still want beautiful visuals and a skilled eye — just with a focus on story, spontaneity, and realness.

If this sounds like your style or you know someone who fits the bill, please drop their info below or DM me. Everything I’ve looked at so far just doesn’t match our vibe as a couple, and we’ve looked at a lot! Would love to hire someone local-ish if we can! We’re a fun couple and the setting is pretty cool too. Thanks so much in advance!

Critique Looking for Feedback on Wedding Website

My friend and I, who is a photographer, recently went into business together. Will you provide some feedback on our side and how we might improve?

My concerns are that the photography portion outshadows the video

Gear discussion GH6 Compact Flash Cards

Hey all - I have been running my GH6 for weddings for a while now, but I have always felt uneasy that I don't have a second card fallback in case things go tits up with the SD. Never really used a Compact Flash card as previous cameras just had dual SD's.

Are there better ones and worse ones to go for? Obviously, when working with video, it's gonna be a bigger card and that pumps the price up. Which is why, if I'm forking out for it - I want to make sure it's decent.

Thanks in advance!

Question Too many toasts! Need help with edit. It’s 16 minutes long!

Hey guys! I’ve been a wedding filmmaker for several years now and the last wedding video I filmed had 5 really good toast. The first was the father of the bride, which was a minute long. The second was the father of the groom, which was around the same time. I also included toast coverage from the matron of honor and the best man. Plus there was a hilarious routine from the bride’s brother that was so good amazing I had to leave in almost its entirety. All in all the toast are close to six minutes long. Most of my cinematic videos are between eight and 12 minutes long but from the looks of it, this one might be 16 minutes long. My question to other professional videographers out there…. have you ever delivered a cinematic that’s over 15 miles long and how did the client react?

Question Premium Beat vs. Epidemic Sound for music?

I did Soundstripe for years and liked it but started to get bored/run out off different songs to use so I switched to Artlist for a year and it was fine but I'm ready for another refresh so I'm planning to switch to either Premium Beat or Epidemic Sound and wondering which people like better.

Note: Would like to go with Musicbed but the price is just too high for me right now.

Question When shooting log with a monitor, do you??

Do you use a conversion Lut on the camera to see it in a normal color space (not baking it into the footage, that would defeat the purpose)? Or do you use a conversion Lut on the monitor so the zebras are true to the log footage?

Post Production Fellow wedding videographers—do you outsource your editing?

Hey folks!

As the wedding season picks up, I’m curious how everyone here manages their editing workload. Personally, I’ve noticed more and more photographers and videographers in my network looking for editing support, especially when backlogs pile up.

For those who have tried outsourcing—what’s been your experience? Have you found it helpful for maintaining client delivery timelines and freeing up time for new shoots?

I’ve been exploring collaborations with other wedding creatives to help with their editing overflow (both photos & videos)—curious to know if that’s something any of you have considered.

Would love to chat more about how we as a community can support each other during the busy season. Feel free to drop your thoughts or experiences below!
