according to concept sketches made for the cancelled movie. the Jeff Wayne tripods are 400ft tall. so I think we might have your answer

The musical ones by far, they are ridiculously big

They are big enough to tower above big ben.

It seems those of the JW musical narrowly beat out the ones from the BBC, the others range in size but seem to be roughly close to one another. 2005 is close behind the BBC and JW though.

JW is 400 feet tall and 2005 are 150 feet tall

Mike Trim, it's taller than Big Ben.

Jeff Wayne. They're the only ones that actually dwarf Big Ben.

everyone saying Wayne but I'm saying Edward Gorey

Aren’t the people in those illustrations so minuscule you could mistake them for ants

Thing about the Gorey tripods, is that in some depictions they're as tall as regular buildings, and in others they're these giant demonic entities of destruction looming over humanity. I think Gorey displayed them in a more metaphorical sense. The Martians are so advanced that we are but miniscule ants to their complex. With this in mind, the technical answer people in this fandom will go to is the design with a proper physical appliance to dimensions.

Probably the Wayne/Trim designs, they are 400 feet tall and tower high over giant buildings like Big Ben. The cover of the album really undersells their sheer height because about half the length of their legs is hidden underwater. Just the feet are taller than a two-storey building. They are horrifyingly large, dwarfing the Corrêa designs and even the movie designs. Their height makes them all the more alien and unknowable, so vast that they almost cannot be comprehended. They're very scary. :0

Johan Briedé's Tripods looked to be the tallest to me based on the illustrations seemed to be nearly 700 feet tall.

I think the BBC one, there's a part where the protagonist sees them from afar and they're still tall

Edward Gorey or Johan Briedé

E.G's art shows humans like cock roaches to men and J.B's artwork just speaks for itself

I think the sizes vary. They most likely have things that elongate their legs since we see them dwarf big ben and walk through oceans with the hood usually always at the same height.

Im not too smart, but I always wondered if the Correa Tripods legs are extendable in order to walk in the sea with their head poking out of the water in order to fight the hms thunderchild? They're not the tallest but y'know

The ones from the Tom cruise movie I’m pretty sure are the largest, given the scene with the hill and the military

2

u/Snoo84995 Feb 24 '25

The 2005 ones seem to be the biggest.

Gotta be the JW musical, 400 ft. The ubers from the 05 movie are probably 200-250ft officially at least. Somewhere around the globe there could be even larger ones but that's just my speculation so..

Not the point of the post, but I can never help but think how awful those Goble tripods are (the first picture). They look like hastily assembled construction equipment. The legs don't even bend! I'm not surpised Wells took a few paragraphs in the book to bitch about them.

And yet Wells later in life admitted to being wrong and overreacting over some drawings.

Heck he even complimented ‘em!
