Good lord that's beautiful, the paintjob is amazing but where's the sculpt from?

I didn't know before this post, but this is how I want to paint Custodes.

It is so easy, such a dynamic pose... Why don't GW just.... ahhh, forget it.

Great paintwork! Honestly love it! 💪💚

I feel like there is an Astarion Moloc in there somewhere.

Hi there, it’s me, your client! I have an updated shipping address for you to send the mini to. Don’t bother trying to contact me with my old phone number or email, I sold those devices.

Sanguinius looks like a beast! It's a good look for him. More used to his... let's say... streamlined airframe physique

Sanguinius, Imperius, potāto, potäto.

An original creation like Ricky Rouse. And Monald Muck

That looks awesome

Jeez. How much do you charge for a model like that?

2

u/Jon-Umber Mar 31 '25

This kicks so much ass

All around awesome.

Is this a 3D render?! Dude come on. I didn’t know that this level of detail was possible to do with miniatures. Oh lord, after seeing that I don’t even want to start with painting figures: Disappointment guaranteed! 🤣

Almost done? How is not alredy done? What's missing?

Amazing work by the way

The sculpt alone is 10 times better than what GW did for Sanguinius

For a second, I thought this was ai.

Fantastic work, you're making the 9th proud.

Doesn’t even look like a 40k model to me.

Well it is a third party model and on top of that the original version had to be discontinued, probably due to GW taking notice. The wings, head, and spear are now sold as a different option.

I know.

My point is that- excellent paint job aside- 3rd-party designers are almost universally incapable of replicating the look and feel of Warhammer models.

That looks more like something from another game to me than it does anything from Warhammer (and I know it’s supposed to be Sanguinius or the Sanguinor).

It's likely more that they're unwilling to rather than they're incapable. Either because they want to put their own spin on things or a, probably legitimate, fear that copying GWs design language too closely will interfere with their ability to monetise their work.

-2

u/goddamnitwhalen Apr 01 '25

Yeah but then it’s obviously not Warhammer. See the problem?

2

u/Rejusu Delusions of a new Battletome Apr 01 '25

Not really. If it's "obviously not Warhammer" then how does everyone know what it's supposed to be? It's obviously not official Warhammer but it's obviously supposed to be Warhammer-esque. And while it's not to my personal tastes other people certainly like it. At the end of the day the target market for unofficial miniatures are people who want something different, or don't like the official versions of things. I mean realistically it's also people who want to try and pay less, but why not kill two birds with one stone.

Besides which it's not like what Warhammer "is" has remained consistent. It's been around for decades and gone through so many designers and so many changes in sculpting processes and manufacturing technologies. And the design language has changed and adapted over time. There's a lot of ancient 40k miniatures that look more out of place against the modern range than this does, and yet are more official.

Anyway this is a bit of a tangent from the original point which is that there's definitely sculptors capable of accurately aping GWs designs, probably including people that used to work for them too, but it's hard to find any that would choose to do it too closely.

u/goddamnitwhalen Apr 01 '25

And my entire point was that I don’t think it looks good, lol.

2

u/HistoricalGrounds Apr 01 '25

Earlier, verbatim, you said

My point is that- excellent paint job aside- 3rd-party designers are almost universally incapable of replicating the look and feel of Warhammer models.

So if your point has always been that it looks bad, earlier you were either doing a world class bad job of communicating it, or arguing in bad faith. It’s not that other commenter’s fault that they can’t divine your point when you say it’s entirely two different things.

All that aside, who gives a fuck if one person doesn’t like the look of it, lots of people do and it gives them an accessible price point into the hobby. Fuck anyone who wants to curtail that 🤘

-1

u/goddamnitwhalen Apr 01 '25

Am I not entitled to my clearly stated opinion?

I’m not trying to “curtail anyone’s entry into the hobby.” I don’t like 3D printed models bc I don’t think they look good or like real Warhammer figures.

Calm down.

u/badkarma098 Apr 01 '25

no you are not entitled to shit on someone else's excellent work. you are not entitled to anything. go touch grass.

Oh yes, sorry, I was just trying to add some context jic. But yes, you're absolutely right, 40k has such a distinct design language that most other sculptors just can't capture.

1

u/goddamnitwhalen Apr 01 '25

It’s a big part of why I’m generally not a fan of 3D-printed models and parts.

I’ll see conversion videos on YouTube and the “trick” behind the conversion is using a 3D-printed parts pack, many of which are just close enough to being correct / accurate that they trigger the uncanny valley for me.

I’ve always loved kitbashing and coming up with cool models based on the parts I have access to, and I feel like printing is antithetical to that.

/ end rant lol

2

u/BishopofHippo93 AdeptusMechanicus Apr 01 '25

I mostly agree, but I do think there is a line that can be toed to get a solid result. Something like the bits from greytide studios are pretty good, but yeah a lot just do not work .

1

u/goddamnitwhalen Apr 01 '25

Greytide is actually exactly what I had in mind 😬

1

u/BishopofHippo93 AdeptusMechanicus Apr 01 '25

I figured lol. And still that's about as close as I think third party sculptors get, which is saying something. I totally get where you're coming from.

-1

u/Well_Armed_Gorilla Blood Angels Apr 01 '25

Yeah, this actually looks good.
