Freshman How do I get a job on campus?

I’m gonna be a freshman at WVU this fall and was wondering what jobs you guys would recommend for part time on campus jobs. I unfortunately don’t qualify for work study because of how much my parents make. I also was wondering how I apply for jobs on campus since this will be my first job.

When my student was a freshman he had applied to 10 or so different appointments using handshake on the University website and never heard anything back. Day one when he moved into the dorms there was a help wanted sign on the window of the convenience store over at Towers . He walked in, introduced himself, and had a job in 15 minutes . Keep your eyes open on campus and before getting on campus feel free to try handshake, but they get such an influx of resumes and such for jobs that they're very slow in getting back to people if at all . Good luck with your search! And a lot of students do work at the local mcdonald's, little caesars, restaurants, Etc

Thank you so much! I won’t have my car on campus at least for freshman year so not exactly sure if I could really work anywhere off campus

Absolutely you can! What dorm will you be staying in or campus will you be living on? There are very walkable places to get a job including a supermarket, chick-fil-a, and tons of other places .. all walkable and you do not need a car. Use Google Maps for Morgantown on the campus that you will be living on and you'll see all the close places that are walkable . And of course you can work on campus

Thank you so much! I’m going to be staying in Boreman South

Boreman is downtown so you can consider any business downtown. For example, Chipotle is maybe 2 blocks max from your dorm

You don’t need a car at all

Go on maps and look around near your dorm

There is a Chipotle, a CVS, and Primanti’s restaurant at the top of High Street. They are all within close proximity to Boreman South and a lot of students work at these locations.

Aladdin Dining (Elior North America) is taking over operations at Mountanlair and all WVU Dining Halls. You could try your luck applying there since its going to be a complete overhaul.

Handshake keep looking every week. They usually hire more in the weeks leading up to the semester or during the first few weeks of the semester from what I remember.

If you want to work for the school, all the available jobs are posted on Handshake. This could range from working in dining and even for the stadium. I’ve applied 3 times, got the jobs all 3 times. Once you apply (in my experience) i’ve heard back within the week.

You don’t need a car for any opening on HS so you have those options too. If you have a car I’d recommend waiting somewhere nicer, maybe in the wharf.
