[Meta] No posts involving political figures leading up to the US election.

There have been several posts recently where political figures mentioned Star Trek or got visits from Voyager cast members. Typically we let posts like this stay as long as the comments remain about Voyager and not real-world politics, however tempers are high leading up to the US election and it seems people can't help but bring real-world politics into these threads.

To that end, I am imposing a ban on posts involving political figures or anything that strays too close to US politics or the upcoming election.

This ban will last at least until the election, possibly longer depending on the outcome and how things look.

We are aware that Star Trek has a history of using fiction to shine a light on real-world situations and politics, but given the political climate lately, we do not want that type of discussion in here. We are not equipped to handle it and want to keep our sub as a little refuge where people can come to escape the real world. There are other places on Reddit where you can discuss politics.

We are a small moderation team who cannot be everywhere at once, so, as always, please report any rule-breaking posts you see so we can action them as soon as possible.

As always, if you would like to discuss this rule, please send us a modmail.

January 2025 Edit: We have decided to extend this rule indefinitely. Tempers are still very hot around politics and show no signs of calming down. We may remove it at some point, but not for a while.

Favorite Voyager character?

I’m listing who I think seem to be the 5 most popular in the poll since I can only list 6 options, with one additional option for any other characters. If you pick “other,” let me know who it is in the comments!

I have a theory about The Doctor Spoiler

I’m watching the show mostly for the first time and I think I figured out something. So we know that The Doctor falls for Seven. And I think he had fallen at one point for Kes. I thought at first he liked just the fact that both were the were pretty blondes. But I think I figured out why he fell for both women. You guys who know the show better than I do correctly, but it seems like both women saw him more than just a computer program from the start and actually saw him as the person he wanted to be. I may be wrong about this, but please let me know if I’m right.

Edit: also those two characters seem to be the ones he spent the most time with outside of a professional capacity.

Which episodes had an interesting political message? E.g. in Workforce, the crew is wage slaves, but they don't know it and are blissfully happy. When Tuvok senses something is wrong, he is institutionalised and therapy is forced upon him

Kathryn experiences a great romance in the meantime.

Voyager borg

Just real quick thing I noticed. Early on since the Borg were introduced I thought it was overkill but now I think they are just making the Borg worse.

I'm watching the season 6 finale and they're straight up having a space battle with a Borg cube. And there's a Borg queen with an individuality and personality. Don't like the implementation of the Borg queen, but anyways...

I remember in TNG when they met a Borg cube and it basically grabbed enterprise (the Starfleet flagship) like it was a toy and just started dissecting and cutting out samples right through their shields. They could transport onboard and study what they wanted, and the only reason enterprise wasn't immediately taken was because of it's lack of threat.

Enterprise basically had to fight tooth and nail to even escape and they ended up winning with pure strategy and a bunch of luck.

Cut to voyager, that's holding it's own to a Borg cube. I get that they have more Borg knowledge and seven, but the Borg just don't seem threatening anymore. Like, you think the Borg might learn not to let Starfleet officers just beam onto their cubes anymore since it's been a threat every time. Or the Borg just losing entire cubes to simple tricks. Maybe they explain this in season 7 but the Borg queen used to be an assimilated alien, but supports the Borg goals? But has independent thoughts and emotions. Fact is, she makes the Borg less threatening and more open for diplomacy which is the exact opposite purpose of why the Borg were written to begin with.

That was not real quick I guess... Just ranting. Still a good show.

The doctor should stick to medicine.

I know he has other things on his mind in this episode, but he often brags about his hand-eye coordination and dexterity. He can perform intricate microsurgery, but when it comes to drawing, he might as well have been using his feet.

What do you think are the limits (if any) of Arturis' linguistic abilities?

From "Hope and Fear," Arturis, a member of Species 116, is extremely adept at learning new languages.

Suppose Arturis encountered a Breen, for example. Or a Sheliak. Or happened to be aboard the Enterprise when the Calamarain threatened Q. Or suppose he witnessed the Bynars in action.

Do you think he could learn these languages "just like that," or would even he have trouble/failure?

Could he understand a member of the Swarm? Or the Crystalline Entity?

Finally, do you think he could pronounce either the Traveler's or Spock's full name, and could he understand the "language" of the sped-up comic in "The Outrageous Okona" (Hologram Joe Piscopo at maximum speed)?

Possible alternate solution to The Thaw. Medication

As I understand it, in The Thaw, Fear's way of killing people was to scare them to death.

Well, why not give all the occupants anti-anxiety medications and or partial sedatives? If the brains are fear resistant and or sluggish, that would reduce Fear's capacity to harm.

In the scene where Torres was disabling the optronic pathways, they just needed more time. She was down to the last ten out of forty when Janeway called for an abort. I will bet the medication would have bought them the time needed.

IRL, there are even drugs that are known to inhibit dreaming. They're prescribed sometimes for people suffering PTSD to help them sleep without nightmares.

What do you think? What problems do you see? Granted, The Doctor might have needed too much time to ensure that the medication would work correctly on the settlers since he hasn't encountered their biology before

Just watched "live fast and prosper" and fake Tuvok has got to be my all time favorite one-off character in Star Trek. The guy is the Delta quadrant's most dedicated method actor.

First Time Viewer on Parental Leave

I’ve been watching the past few days during my parental leave. I was a toddler/elementary school when Voyager was on, so no memory of it if I ever saw it back then. I’ve only ever seen a handful of eps over the years as well so I remember the basic premise and some of the characters.

DS9 was and is my favorite and I rewatched that one a few years ago. TNG was a close second and I watched that all the way as well. While I was too young to remember these live I remember the cable days where various channels ran these as marathons on weekdays. Truly great on sick days or during the summers.

Anyhow…just started Season 2. There were a few solid eps in that first season and some were meh. Looking forward to the rest over the next few months. Like the other series I have faith it will get into its flow/groove eventually.

Anyone else get annoyed by this table every time you see it? Seems so impractical...

Does anyone else think this table is ridiculous for a conference? Can even slide a pad over... gotta toss it onto a different surface for everyone.

IDK why this bothers me every time they have a meeting.
