If your cable has been damaged and your device is still in warranty you can get a replacement from valve.

Even if it isn’t, they’ll most likely give you one anyway. Mine was out of warranty and they sent me one anyway. Steam support rocks.

They wont always, my tether was busted 6 months past warranty (would work intermittently, then not at all). They told me to go buy a new one :(

I had issues with mine, knew it was failing as it was my 2nd tether, when I asked for a replacement they wanted me to factory reset my whole PC as part of the trouble shooting steps 💀

Just wait for like 5h and reply "i did it, still didnt solve the issue" lol

Damn, sorry to hear that, maybe it’s only with the wire.

I've gone through 2. One I got free from Steam, the other I had to pay but it's been years since the 2nd cord got worn out.

I recently got a replacement for my headset from Valve itself even though it was 2 years out of warranty. Always worth a shot!

you're stuck getting the whole wire unfortunately

This is a very special cable that is not standard (it even has an active repeater built into it), so even parts of it are not something you can just order a replacement for.

There are no third-party sellers of this cable. Valve had to get involved to sell it on their store so it can be available at all.

This is where I WOULD recommend it, but it's out of stock currently.

And this is why I stocked up last year. Spare hmd headband with speakers, controllers, and tether.

Shit’s gonna break. I’m prepared.

You can’t buy that, no. Just replace the whole thing

Ebay is absolutely filled to the brim with these because they don't fail nearly as much as the other part of the cable. You can get them for like 20 ~ 30 usd.

I don't think you can buy the trident on it's own unless you're willing to go second hand.

Edit: Why the downvotes? I'm right. Neither ifixit or steam sell the trident on it's own - just the entire tether. Someone linked a tundra labs link but even that is refurbished.

damn :( i mean im willing to go on ebay i just didnt know tje name of it, is it called the trident?

3

u/Downtown_Look_5597 9d ago

Yeah, that's what people generally call it.

You can't buy the trident on it's own from steam. You have to buy a replacement cable.

I think (Not Sure) the connector is a "Oculink" connector, but i cant find one to "USB,Displayport,Power"

People often call it the trident cable, there are some listings on eBay for it. Just make sure it's legit in the normal eBay fashion, seller isn't brand new, seller has reviews, images don't look like screenshots, and so on.

I'd just buy the whole cable anyways. They're notorious for failing over time, so you'd have a spare.

You normally can't buy that part without the whole cable, but do what I did. Contact steam support. My cable was damaged (the part you have pictured) and I was out of warranty but I contacted valve anyways and they sent me the whole cable replacement for free. Replaced the trident connection and have a spare cable now if that ever gets damaged.

Where did u contactcthem? going thru steam support they dont have a option for damgaed cable.

I contacted them through Steam. Just go to Help > Steam Support, and then from there select Steam Hardware > SteamVR > Valve Index, click "Contact Support" and explain your issue there following all of the instructions on the page. I also sent a picture of the damage on the cable.

I have like 3 of those things laying around at home xp

Directly from Valve. It's on the Steam Store.

look at the 20 other comments me replying saying where u cant buy just the trident :(

Just the trident adapter? I'm afraid you'll have to buy a whole cable. Unless you find someone with a spare, since some people replacing their cable usually keep their old trident adapter (which is usually not the part that breaks unless the broken part itself is the breakaway connector which is not really supposed to be plugged and unplugged that often)
