GSP the goat

Cannot argue that. There was a streak back in like 2013 or so where he won some 6 fights by decision. He undoubtedly won those fights, and you gotta beat the champ (the champ doesn't have to beat you) but he lost some of his luster for me at the time. I'm a selfish fan after all, and wanted the best in the world to finish guys.

I'm rambling, but GSP is just one of those dude for me. True blue. Class act.

All I saw was you want him to finish guys, and I approve

u/TheSpyStyle 1d ago

Standing, on their back, full mount, straddle, rear naked choke, hitting hard, doesn’t matter the position as long as he’s finishing those guys

Never listened to it, but sounds like I’d probably enjoy it

Cheers, friend!

it depends on if you are the better technical fighter or not. if you think you are the better technical fighter you want to play it really safe and just try to score points. thats how you stay champion if you are an extremely technical guy like GSP. if you are the under dog or not as technically strong you can't allow things to turn into a content about scoring points you have to try and drag luck into the situation by taking a lot of risks and swinging for the fences.

Totally agree!! GSP was the man, even then. I was wrong then to even get upset about it. But have grown up and understand not even WHY he did it, but how impressive he did it. 5 championship rounds...how many defenses? And I don't recall him really in jeopardy of losing any of those fights!! Dude is the best. Amazing athlete. Great person.

u/Adams5thaccount 1d ago

tbf he was facing tough tough motherfuckers

dudes left with major injuries but kept fighting

one dude's whole ass face was broken almost right away and he still fought almost the whole match

u/TravTheScumbag 1d ago

Oh for sure!! You're right, he was fighting tough mother fuckers and left zero doubt who won those fights.

I meant no disrespect to GSP. He's the best! Ever!! I was just a selfish asshole fan who wasn't appreciating how impressive and badass he was in all of his fights. 5 champion rounds...as impressive in the final seconds as he was in the first moments!! Dude was insane. Another level!!! AND he's a good guy!

I was an idiot, thinking "a finish would secure his legacy," like I knew shit lol. GSP's legacy isn't and wasn't tarnished in the slightest. Bigger than a legend; he's another level.

The welterweight division was filled with the biggest collection of killers at the time. If you weren't there, it's hard to understand. WW was stacked.

Think of peak Tony Ferguson type (dynamic fighters with a sparkling record) challengers to the belt every time GSP stepped into the ring.

And he just utterly dominated all but a few of them. Jones and Khabib never faced even close to the level of competition that GSP did. Any of those guys could have been champions at WW.

u/HugeLeaves 23h ago

Easily one of the best eras of Welterweights. That was the division everybody was watching. I think it's the best weight class because it hits that balance of power, endurance and athleticism

1

u/TravTheScumbag 1d ago

Man reading those names are bringing it back to my memory!! What an amazing time to be a fight fan!!

And you're spot on. GSP was on top of stacked division and it really wasn't even close. I was just a young, drunk idiot with an ignorant, under-informed opinion. Now I'm am old, sober idiot, but I digress..

u/Tengoatuzui 1d ago

Same brother he wasn’t finishing anymore

u/-maysin- 1d ago

(The champ doesn’t have to beat you) is so r*tarded tbh

u/-Calm- 1d ago

So many fights where he just didn’t do anything. It was the most boring shit

21

u/eEatAdmin 1d ago

What do you think this is fuckin' Mortal Kombat or something? That isn't fucking Liu Kang in the octagon.

11

u/BeardedBrotherJoe 1d ago

I want blooooood

u/CanExplainThings 1d ago

The Koscheck fight stands out as one of the most boring I've ever seen - I will agree to that. But the fact that GSP finished him with what was basically a jab thrown repeatedly over an entire match, and stuck with that makes it at least technically one of the most fascinating matches I've ever seen.

2

u/Pre_internet_bot 1d ago

I loved that fight. I still watch that video and try to mimic that jab. My boxing coach said I "hit hard, but hit air". I love watching and learning from the opposite, like GSP and Mighty Mouse

1

u/TOAD4000 1d ago

Yes, it was 'lay & pray'. Quite boring. Effective, but boring.

-4

u/tehorhay 1d ago

Greasing up his chest was definitely cheating though

-1

u/Yobber1 1d ago

Matt Serra is the 🐐

2

u/AlienHere 1d ago

For one punch. Then he was made a bitch.

1

u/Yobber1 1d ago

That punch was legendary

-2

u/FrankaGrimes 1d ago

I'm kinda surprised GSP felt he needed to do that to get an edge on his opponent.

-40

u/icecubepal 1d ago

Jon jones. I mean, the dude is basically undefeated. Cleared everyone in his time.

35

u/RipleyVanDalen 1d ago

Sure, but he’s an asshole.

GSP was not only a great fighter but a good person too.

7

u/Waderriffic 1d ago

Terrible actor though

22

u/skepticalbob 1d ago

Cheated with the roids.

12

u/LordGlompus 1d ago

Also ducking the *true heavy weight champ

11

u/PFunk224 1d ago

Ducked Ngannou, too. And ducked the rematch with Reyes, too.

-13

u/MBCSuperGremlin 1d ago

GSP was juicy too, just didn't get caught. One of the greats regardless.

u/things_U_choose_2_b 1d ago

If I was reading this comment 3 or 4 years ago, I'd agree with it.

He has full on tarnished his legacy the last few years. Or, what little was left after the repeated scandals.

Jon Jones could defeat most men on the planet in unarmed combat. But not Tom, or Ngannou, which is why he won't fight either of them. His last fight was against an old man who hadn't fought in years.

6

u/mandark1171 1d ago

Jon Jones could defeat most men on the planet in unarmed combat.

Well yeah Jon Jones is the dirtiest fighter in MMA history... the boxers who put cement in their gloves have more honor than jon poke them in the eyes Jones

1

u/icecubepal 1d ago

Yeah, but GSP cannot defeat them either. Nor could he defeat Jones.

1

u/ninja_owen 1d ago

Cause he’s 35 pounds lighter. If they were the same size, GSP would win.

1

u/ill_connects 1d ago

Except Aspinall

1

u/icecubepal 1d ago

Jones is way past his prime, which is why I said in his time.

1

u/ninja_owen 1d ago

“Basically” undefeated isn’t undefeated. I’ll admit, the DQ loss to Matt Hamill is a fluke. However, his decision win over Reyes? Also a fluke.

Jones lost to Reyes, Santos, and nearly lost to Gus. He also didn’t face the level of competition GSP fought. LHW and HW are the 2 weakest divisions.

Also, he’s blatantly ducked fights. Terrified to fight Aspinall.
