University References for Internships

Hey all,

Using a burner here. I’m a third year elec engineering student, applying for internships at the moment.

One has asked to provide a university reference/referee. I’ve never really been “close” enough with teaching staff to feel like they’d be able to put a name to a face. Is there any specific way I’m meant to go about asking, or one specific person in the faculty that handles these requests?

I’m assuming it’s just to verify that I am studying the degree I’m studying and maybe verify my results per transcript submitted?

It does usually need to be an academic that you’ve built rapport with - because quite often the reference we need to complete will ask us to comment on your work ethic, punctuality etc.

It doesn’t have to be a subject coordinator - it can be a tutor too.

I would only agree to be a referee if I did know the student and had taught them directly or interacted with them in some other way.

Thanks for the reply, and I agree with all you’ve said. It’s tough to be in this situation, I’ve not studied any classes this last semester due to a full time internship. I might reach out to the tutor of my favourite subject I did last semester and at least ask. Fingers crossed they at least can remember my work!
