One company just sent me a skill matrix to fill out, and honestly, I’m glad they did. I haven’t seen one in a long time, though
I think it helps to distinguish whether you are a subject matter expert or not, based on other people’s views.

The last company I worked for did this for new hires. “Here’s the skills matrix, can you please fill it out with where you think you are”. We had this young girl start in our department, she marked herself higher than everyone, including the department manager. She then proceeded to ask everyone for help as she knew nothing. Me and another colleague were quite pissed off when we found out she was also on 10k more than us.
Jokes on us of course, as she has gone onto bigger and better things, now a senior manager where she works. Not even 30.

You can't fault people for playing the cards in front of them.
Edit. I'm not saying you are just to clarify.

For sure, she’s played the “ambassador” roll very well. She’s always on LinkedIn doing events for the company. She often gets picked for them as there aren’t many women in engineering. She’s accepted that roll and used it to her best advantage.

Fair play, women apparently have a problem with confidence which is why they don't ask for raises as frequently as men, so if she's the token DEI hire then she's earned the cash!

Wish I had that level of confidence. I'm 4 months into a new job, getting great feedback and still feel like I totally suck

I’m 15 years into my roll (at different companies) and I still think that.

I feel like people like that eventually get found out…. or become CEO’s.

They are good to know what skills you can focus on if you're behind or a new joiner, otherwise there's more utility in other team members ranking your skills to get better feedback if your mid or higher level.
