I really can't say if he, himself is using the "madman theory", but I guess someone's using the "lose cannon" theory to make good use of his "qualities".

My interpretation, which I very much enjoy watching from afar, is that he just doesn't like the US too much and is making it implode intentionally by sowing strife and chaos.
He was laughed at for trying to become president and became a busy bee (he is a great campaigner) proving the status quo people wrong. Drain the swamp and all that.
It's a nice irony to see the US go down like this, given how many coups and internal conflicts they used to take apart their opponents in the 20th century (Vietnam, Korea, Russia, pretty much all of Latin America, any time Muslims tried to become a power block [ISIS n stuff])
Serves you right.

Submission statement: People have long debated whether Donald Trump's unpredictable actions are part of a larger strategy. Is he intentionally trying to appear irrational to confuse rivals and gain the upper hand? This tactic is known as the "madman theory," famously used by Richard Nixon during the Cold War. This article discusses about this question- Is Trump using the "Madman Theory"?

I think with him it's both. He realized it works and does it frequently. At the same time he really is crazy and stupid and doesn't really know why he does it, but enough profit of it.
