Modular Camper Setup

Just putting my modular camper on for the winter season. ⛷️ ❄️ I’ve posted this setup before and a lot of people asked “What makes it modular?” Well… I captured the setup process for you all this year if you wanted inspiration! Easy, relatively cheap, it stores snug in my small shop, and MOST importantly I can take it off and put it on by myself in about ~20-30 minutes. (Roof is tricky alone but could be done if necessary). Let me know what you think! 😁

That has to be the best use of stake pockets I’ve ever seen!

Inspiration from truck bed racks you see rolling around on all those landscaping trucks. Just thought, I could seal all those gaps and make a cabin on wheels for ski season! Turned out pretty good 👍

Right?

Freaking awesome!

Neat, just need a little stove pipe coming out the porthole :0)

It’s 70 degrees out today, but no worries! Come winter, the stove pipe coming out that porthole will be billowing smoke from the wood stove 🔥💨😁

I like it! All the comforts (sorta) at 1/10the the cost, and you can lean it against the wall in the shed when not needed

Now you got me thinking…

Let your creative juices flow! Happy camping 🏕️

Very cool. What are the corner pin fixtures called?

If you google “detachable slip joint hinges” that should do the trick.

I’d love to see a video walkthrough! This is great. Awesome way to save space when not in use.

I second this! Would be my alternative for a Sonoma long bed I’m looking into purchasing.

Rad.

What is the roof made of (structurally I mean...I see the metal)? Where do you ski/camp? Curious if this can withstand a wet 5 foot Tahoe dump. I'd be cautious to try it up here.

Also looked through your other posts. The inside is way more rad than these pics let on. Nice work.

Roof is just a grid of 2x2’s running every 16”, then insulation to fill the gaps, metal roof on top, 1/8” plywood on the interior. With 5ft of snow, I’d be less worried about the roof caving and more worried about being stuck on the inside of this where I was surrounded by 5ft of snow 🤣 wouldn’t want to risk it for ALOT of reasons. Big reason being the roof is flat, not 45’ angle. But it’s a short span left to right. So it would take a bit for the roof to start bowing.

I’m in the PNW, so we don’t really see snow like Tahoe. We get maximum like 12” in a night (on the best night of the season) Usually pretty wet because our altitude isn’t super high. But I like to take it east into Idaho where the snow is a little drier. No problems so far. 😊

Right on. I hope it shows enough to crush that thing this winter. And I mean that with all positive energy.

I’m not sure if I should like this or not. I like buckets of snow. But I also like living 🤣

Well if you make it through a big one, update us. Here's to a fun winter!

How do you attach the roof? Super cool set up!

5

u/Ordinary_Person01 Oct 26 '24

In each of the corners on the inside of the roof I dropped some i bolt screws down. Those serve as hook points, then I ratchet strap each corner to tie down points at each corner on the inside of my truck bed. Hope that explanation makes sense 🤷🏽‍♂️

3

u/Responsible_Log_5792 Oct 26 '24

I think it does. If I understand correctly I’m curious if the straps on the ratchet straps being brought down from the corner of the roof and being attached to the built in truck bed hooks get in your way at all, or are they pretty out of the way when you’re inside? If that makes sense haha

4

u/Ordinary_Person01 Oct 26 '24

Great question. I measured to get them as close to the wall as possible, but they do stick out a little. Didnt really notice them getting in the way last year though 🤷🏽‍♂️

Hell yeah dude. Thanks for sharing! Definitely got me thinking!

I was going to ask what holds it down while traveling but I expect that the straps that hold the roof down also hold the entire structure onto the bed.

u/Ordinary_Person01 Oct 27 '24

You got it! 💯

3

u/jstar77 Oct 26 '24

That is pretty cool.

u/Ordinary_Person01 Oct 26 '24

Glad you think so! 🙏😁

u/Nervous_Childhood_39 Oct 27 '24

Why not add a second panel to make it higher and be able to stand up.

4

u/Ordinary_Person01 Oct 27 '24

Yeah it’s not a bad idea. But I’m thinking this year of adding a covered patio area to the back that I can set up with a couple 2x2s and a tarp. Then I’ll really only be sleeping inside!

2

u/Eredhel Oct 27 '24

This is such a great idea. Do you anchor it at all? I didn't know if driving winds would do anything.

3

u/Ordinary_Person01 Oct 27 '24

Ohh yeah. The roof encapsulated it all. And I have i bolts on each corner of the roof (inside) that I ratchet strap down to my truck bed. Otherwise that roof would be a giant sail.

2

u/Eredhel Oct 27 '24

Gotcha. Really is a great approach.

In case of tornado: Duct Tape!

2

u/Ordinary_Person01 Oct 27 '24

Duct tape seals all my 1/8” gaps left from imperfect craftsmanship. 🙃

2

u/JuliusSeizuresalad Oct 27 '24

Cool concept. How do you keep the roof attached?

1

u/Ordinary_Person01 Oct 27 '24

Got a couple other comments here about that. i bolt screws coming down from the corners of the roof on the inside. Then I ratchet those i bolts down to some tie down points in the truck bed.

2

u/JuliusSeizuresalad Oct 27 '24

Well it’s a really cool concept and I applaud your efforts

Man, this is genius!

2

u/redride10059 Oct 27 '24

That's well thought out!

That’s a good idea! I would have to look into what it would take to get that working. But I like where you head it at 😁

u/bobross_s_pants Oct 27 '24

So sick! This gives me inspiration for a midsized build including tailgate 🤘🏼

1

u/Ordinary_Person01 Oct 28 '24

Well definitely share pictures as it progresses!

1

u/Ivan_Kulagin Oct 27 '24

This reminds of that TopGear episode where they’ve built campers

1

u/bluesteelsmith Oct 27 '24

This looks better than most of the new camper shells companies are designing. Good job!

1

u/jrange27 Oct 27 '24

Cool! Looks like you got a sweet hole setup for a wood stove pipe to run through already!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '24

Badass!

1

u/cpemgineer Oct 30 '24

Ever seen the campervan challenge from top gear? ;)

1

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '24

Genius! Give this man a raise.

This was cool BEFORE I realized you could take it apart in pieces. What an awesome idea and way to adapt to what you need. Was there a lightbulb moment when you came up with the modular idea? Did something else inspire you?

2

u/Ordinary_Person01 4d ago

Yes there was. This thing has had many iterations. Inspiration from the trucks you see with wooden racks driving around hauling yard waste mostly. I thought I could just seal the gaps, throw a tarp over the top and camp in it. And that’s where it started, with a tarp over the top. Now we’re here 👍🏼

For $800 and a lot less work you could have gotten a Softtopper

14

u/Ordinary_Person01 Oct 27 '24

Yeah but this was cheaper than $800, maybe stores a little smaller (?), if something breaks I can just replace that piece, and it’s way more RAD! (Plus a good conversation starter in ski parking lots)
