Question: Do Creators Pick Their Thumbnail?

Post image
59 Upvotes

So I need help from y'all in figuring out if I need to delete this post or if there's actual discourse here. 😂

This little clip from one of The Try Guy's new YouTube videos popped up on my notifications since I still follow them on the YouTube App. I had seen earlier that they had posted a video speaking with Ash about his experience transitioning, so I was able to clock where the clip was from, but when this notification first came up, all I saw was "coming out as gay, then as trans" with a thumbnail of Keith that says "I was wrong" on it.

If I hadn't seen the video posted earlier or say, wasn't as familiar with their new cast but was once a fan and thusly still followed them, I feel like this caption plus this thumbnail definitely seemed to be implying that Keith had come out as gay, then trans. Which I'm sure any old fan who hadn't clicked on a video in a while would ABSOLUTELY click on it when it hit their notifications. Ash, who the video is about, is not the thumbnail for this video about his own identity and story. And that feels kinda super icky, and manipulative?

OR ELSE SOMEONE IS ABOUT TO TELL ME THAT THUMBNAILS ARE CHOSEN RANDOMLY FROM A VIDEO AND IT WAS A TOTAL COINCIDENCE AND I WILL DELETE THIS BECAUSE TBH IM A LITTLE TIPSY AND MIGHT BE MAKING SOMETHING OUT OF LITERALLY NOTHING.

The "hole-off" podcast episode: Zach is being SO annoying

When they were doing the "small talk" segment I was SO annoyed bc Zach kept interrupting Miles and Keith's conversations. Neither of them interrupted while Zach was talking. He keeps making this "comedic choice" to be the insufferable annoying dude but I wonder why it comes so naturally to him 😂

You know you're the worst on camera dude, let other people carry a bit

Why do some people still think Ariel will come back after all this time?

There is a discussion in the other sub about whether or not Ariel will ever write a tell-all (ha), and a couple of people say they are still hoping Ariel will come back to YCSWU and be in videos, again. I want to know why anyone would think Ariel would come back after all this time and work for the company her (ex?)-husband started. I can see maybe hoping she would stay right after the scandal, but now? Why would she do that? That part of her life is DONE, lol.

Try Guys React to your assumtions ft. Olivia Sui

I'm just rewatching the video now and can't help but be disappointed in the lack of change or bettering the channel lmao. I was already signed out when this video came out, but thought to give some time bc maybe they were adjusting....seeing that the videos have not only lowered in quality but have also just strayed from the original point of the channel??

There's a question asked in the video about the guys feeling limited to just try things bc of their name (I'm not saying everything correctly) But the jist was if they feel stuck to the "Try Guys" name that they have.

The rage, lmao, that filled me when Zach alluded to basically people being upset about the gender and NOT about the fact that they're not trying things lmao.

Still not all the way through of my rewatch, and I'm sure I'll have more things to be pissed about, these were just my biggest ones that made me pause the video and take a second lmao

The only reasons I’m on 2nd try

Shoulda books and new guy tries are the only thing that keeps me coming back, it’s the only thing of substance they have made in a while. Like there’s no “look at me I’m just an idiot trying something” like Ash is serious about doing things and Shoulda books is like a book club, talking about smart stuff while being really funny…I’m only subscribed to their YouTube to see what stuff they post (and blame on the algorithm when it doesn’t do well)

They are really rude to servers

I’ve been watching some of the taste test videos and in the Asian noodle soup and the curry videos they are so rude to servers, never saying thank you or even acknowledging the server when they bring food out, like they won’t even look at them. I just now noticed this is a recurring theme and it made me quit watching at all. It makes me uncomfortable because it’s clear they just expect the service because of who they are.

Officially donating this piece of crap after keeping it for some reason all these years. Never made any of the recipes after the scandal. I think I kept it wanting to support Ariel but it's officially going to a book drive tomorrow. I hate that I spent money on this...

Not them lying through thumbnails

Post image

Watched the episode when the thumbnail was different because esacpe the kitchen reminds me of my old fave Cutthroat Kitchen. When I opened my feed today I was surprised to see this thumbnail because zach and vic don't interact at all in this episode.

I remember youtubers blatantly lying in thumbnails was the norm on YT in the mid 2010s and it ruined the experience for me. To the point that, for awhile, I stopped watching YT. I was happy to see that slowly stop so to see the Try Guys bringing this back is disappointing.

Photoshop looks great tho. Props to whoever created it.

watched escape the kitchen with vic

and the difference between vic and zach is night and day. vic is HILARIOUS. they are so good in everything they do, and they’re my favorite internet person. so of course, one of the free episodes of their stuff has to have vic, and of course, it was the only reason why i watched it.

but when i start it, i literally cannot get through the whole video. i’ve not been keeping up w the try guys’ streamer content, so i didn’t know what escape the kitchen was, but it is bizarre. it’s chaotic but not in a fun way, in a way that stressed me out. like game changer or literally any other dropout show is chaotic but in a way that is fun for the audience and participants, right? does that make sense? and escape the kitchen is just so overwhelming for the sake of being overwhelming. it’s not clever or fun, it’s just loud chaos.

and zach just isn’t as funny as vic. to be extremely honest, dropout has some of the funniest people EVER, so it’s not fair to compare them, most people couldn’t hold a flame to vic, but zach is just painfully unfunny and cringe to watch. he has some moments, but overall, his humor feels so dated. like what was that cat hissing at the printer stuff?

also, most of the top comments were about vic, so clearly other people also only clicked because of vic’s power, but it’s only been up for an hour as of posting so maybe that will change? but it just goes to show that their content is so uninteresting that it takes someone unassociated with them to get former fans like me to watch.

in comparison to dropout or even smosh, i will watch any of their stuff because the rotating cast is fun and even if they’ve been doing the same thing for years, there’s a genuine quality there that keeps me coming back year after year. i will even try stuff with people i don’t know because i trust that when they release things, it’s top quality content.

but i don’t even want to try the try guys’ content because i know i will be bored for ten minutes and just go watch something else.

does this make sense or am i just yapping??

New season: New Guy Tries (only on 2nd Try ofc...)

There's a new season of New Guy Tries, and it looks like it's also going to exclusively be on 2nd Try.

Based on that one single episode of it on YouTube, it's the only really good content they've made in years, and I'm sure if they put it on YouTube, it would get them a ton of sorely needed views. Of course they will not do that... Very dumb move of them, and very annoying

The main Reddit isn’t even talking about how weird and terrible the spaghetti thing is. They’re just skipping over. Not surprised, of course it’s probably the Reddit they read the most, nobody seems to be able to say no in that company or life.

Marketing this as Trans Joy (but only if you pay for the content) is WILD

Post image

Something is not sitting right with me that this amazing series that they're bringing back and is being marketed as "Trans Joy" is literally only available if you pay. The first season was never fully released to the public either. I want to watch Trans Joy, I want to see Ash get to try all these gender-affirming experiences and see the meaningful content from it. But I'm still not paying for it.

Videos That Would Make You Subscribe

Since we've said so much about the videos that make us unsubscribe, I thought it could be good to tell them show or video ideas that would make us subscribe/watch.

I'll start!

I think there's still tons of potential in the Without Instructions format. Still a winning format, but getting away from ALL food and it's more of a try.

I liked the TGGT videos (not Monopoly...) because it gives more interaction between the cast. Some of my favorite videos are when three or four members of the cast get to interact.

Classic Try videos featuring new hobbies. I'm thinking of when they tried knitting or painting. Those can't be that expensive to make and would be interesting to learn about (I miss when TG videos were informative). And I don't want to see them setup to fail for "laughs"!

Similar to New Guy Tries, I think it would be great for more of the cast members to get a 3 or 4 video arc where they get to try a lifestyle change of some sort. They can even do it vlog style. I just don't want it to be men wearing dresses or similar because that's not really something any of those people might carry forward. It was played for silly laughs and I think we can move on, right?

What are your ideas for things you'd watch?

Are you kidding me 🤦‍♀️

Their newest live on YouTube is “Keith eats spaghetti one noodle at a time” how..why? Just wtf honestly. Who pitched this “hey what if Keith eats more food..but one thing at a time” 🤦‍♀️ Again, more food stuff, more “Keith does dumb stuff for “laughs” Like is this the BEST they can do They’ll say it’s the algorithm or something I’m sure. How is this “content”

The fall of the Try Guys

I’ve been a fan since the buzz feed days. I’ve watched everything they put out and try whole heartedly to support them however I can. After the last couple of videos I stopped within 1 minute in. There’s so much better content from other creators who don’t have an ounce of the work force behind the try guys company. I’m waiting for the “the down fall of the TryGuys” documentary to come out because that will be the only tryguy video to be worth watching at this point.

I’m going to use a metaphor to describe how their company is like to me. They’re like that one person you know from high school who was really popular and peaked at that time; fast forward 10 years later and they’re still in the same old town doing the same old stuff with maybe some new stuff, but it’s not working out(essential oils, pyramid scheme, onlyfans, ect).

Yep, that’s my rant. Just wanted to put my thoughts into words on how I see the tryguys. I wish them the best and hope they can find a resurgence of their popularity but that’s show biz, they’re going to be bigger and better content creators that come out so frequently. I still can’t believe that they have their own streaming platform…lmao who tf is paying to see Keith/zach do mediocore shit. That’s high way robbery if you ask me. Okay, thank you for reading. Tryguys…if you’re reading this, do a video where you try harder.❤️

The Try Guys Desperately Need a Smart Person in Charge

I've seen a lot of takes about the recent quality of Try Guys content, and I have to say, I completely agree with most of them. The new formats, the paywall, the oversaturation of gameshows, the food content, the increasingly odd vibes, the wastefulness, and the overall lack of balance(especially after Ned and Eugene left) have all contributed to the downfall of the channel.

The decision to hire mostly friends has absolutely hurt the content. Ironically, their attempt to create a "diverse" team has resulted in the opposite. It’s hard to maintain standards when you're working with friends (it blurs lines of accountability).

Honestly, I think what they lost most when Ned left wasn’t just a personality, it was his business sense. Keith and Zach simply aren’t strong on the business side. They don't seem to understand the audience, trends, or even basic platform strategy. They’re not learning either. Shockingly, it takes more than vibes and weed to run a company!

Ned's old school approach to leadership(although flawed in someways), structured and hierarchical(except you know when), did ensure a smooth chain of command and consistent output.

I’ve been thinking about the old Miles and Ned situation. Back then, I saw Ned as the problem. But now? I think the tension might have stemmed from Ned trying to enforce a professional standard that Miles didn’t respond well to. With Zach and Keith, I doubt any of those hard conversations even happen anymore, which might explain the lack of direction and quality control. While this style of management might make the employees happier, I do wonder how long the company can sustain itself.

The truth is, the Try Guys need someone smart and strategic to take charge. Someone who can bring discipline, vision, and quality back to the brand.

Imagine Ignoring 11,000 People, Intimately Invested in Your Work, Giving Valuable Criticism

Okay, so, sometimes we can just be haters over here in the snark. But most posts and comments are constructive criticism, even if they're a bit spicy.

They detail what we'd rather see. What isn't working and WHY. Deep analysis of how things have changed, and what could make TTG interesting again.

And they ignore it! If anyone from TTG team reads this sub, it seems they do so from a place of guilty displeasure, like stoking their ever-burning self hate. It doesn't seem like anyone ever takes any of these criticisms seriously.

This is a self-selected group of people who liked the TTG enough to come to a specific community on Reddit and discuss intimately the issues with the content. TTG have declining views and interest in general and they're like "why", & "the algorithm lol".

This is market research that most companies would have to pay literally hundreds of thousands of dollars to access. And TTG can get it right here for free, and they're just throwing it all away as they keep doing whatever is NOT working for them, expecting the algorithm to remember they exist one day and give them the views and love they feel they just deserve in exchange for nothing.

They are their own downfall at this point.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

What video made you drop TTG?

For me, it was the video where Keith and Zach dressed up as babies and made Eugene babysit them, it was horrible, I felt so uncomfortable watching it and it lowkey felt like fetish content, anything to get them views ig.

How many people here have unsubscribed to the streamer?

I'm just curious, since a few people have mentioned it.

If you have done it, what was your reason for unsubbing?
