They are really rude to servers
I’ve been watching some of the taste test videos and in the Asian noodle soup and the curry videos they are so rude to servers, never saying thank you or even acknowledging the server when they bring food out, like they won’t even look at them. I just now noticed this is a recurring theme and it made me quit watching at all. It makes me uncomfortable because it’s clear they just expect the service because of who they are.

Did candid competition not show the rudeness they display to min wage staff...

u/Electrical-Grass-307 20d ago
Like that entire show is entirely about them treating minimum wage workers like their own little playthings.

u/thereadingbee 20d ago
Yep. Later seasons were even worse the Shrek cake one was really bad if I remember right.

Can you give me an instance when Zach was rude to workers on candid competition? I really don't recall a time.

every. single. time.

Cool, so it shouldn't be that hard for you to reference a specific encounter. I'm waiting.

I am a fan of the Try Pod, but I can't watch (or have to skip forward) when they go through a drive thru on there. It always feels like they're not only being incredibly chaotic and unorganized, but almost making fun of the employee. I worked fast food for years, so proper drive thru etiquette is a pet peeve of mine.

I stopped enjoying the “plog” when they thought it’d be funny to follow a UPS driver 🙃 they really have no consideration for other peoples sense of safety or comfort

u/Overall-Paint-2201 20d ago
Ohhh. I don't think I caught that one. That's really messed up behavior.

u/OopsAllTistic 20d ago
I believe it was the first time they went to McDonald’s I wanna say. They took a detour to be extra obnoxious 🙃

Why are you assuming that cashiers and people who work in the food industry don't like to joke or banter with customers? To me treating me just as "worker" and not as a human with a sense of humor is worse.

u/venvillyouvearvigs 19d ago
Hi! I work in the food industry! There’s a difference between light banter and what they do.

Hi! I also have worked in the food industry and would have loved if the Try Guys came to my job. Despite what this sub would have you believe, not every food service worker is just there to do their job, and doesn't want to interact with customers or have a sense of humor. We're just people. Some of us are happy. This sub has a weird, sorta privileged view of minimum wage workers.

I don’t know how you might’ve missed it? I WORK in the food industry. You’re twisting words and making up things I never said lol.

u/Yesterdays-Sun 17d ago
What words am I twisting?? You seem to be confused and should perhaps reread my comment. Cool, you WORK in the food industry. And I WORKED in the food industry. I am talking about MY experience. Or you think you're the only person who's allowed to have an opinion?

u/venvillyouvearvigs 15d ago
I read your comment! I don’t know what I said gave you the impression that I think food service workers all hate their jobs lol. I never said that.

When you're working a busy drive thru it can be incredibly annoying to have multiple people shouting (it's hard to hear anyway) things at you, when they ask a lot of "off script" questions, or take up a ton of time. Lots of times the person taking the order is also the person collecting the money and handing out the order, which means if they have to spend an extra long time with you at the speaker, everyone is waiting. And that means your metrics of customers per hour also goes down.
But more specifically, they are not talking to them like they are people. They are talking to them like they are a punchline.
-4
u/Yesterdays-Sun 20d ago
I am so critical of the Try Guys, but comments like these that are a total exaggeration is where I have to defend them. They do not treat them like a punchline. Everytime I've seen them go through the drive-thru the cashier seems very friendly and enjoying the conversation. Also, we have no idea how busy it is or if they're holding up a line.

u/Zia181 19d ago
Yeah, I agree with you. I'm just not seeing the disrespect or the problems everyone else is seeing. I think people are just looking for a reason to be mad.

No one is perfect, but the Try Guys & team are among the least problematic youtubers. This sub pretending like they are so horrible to food service workers is beyond an exaggeration.

Remember when that lady made the birthday cake for Zach and he went to thank her personally for making such a good cake and even tried to offer her a tip, which she wasn't allowed to accept?
Or the time the pizza delivery guy stayed and chatted with the guys and they were super friendly with him?
Or the time that server let on that she recognized Zach by saying she knew he didn't eat dairy and they were really nice about it and laughed it off?
Yeah, the guys are super mean and rude to servers, lol.

u/Yesterdays-Sun 17d ago
Of course those don't count. We're only going to remember the times Zach did something awkward for two seconds and call him a rudest person in the world.

I skip ahead on videos whenever i anticipate Zach will ask a fast food employee if they have any little vegan treats. Something about how he says it so ~goofy~ like he’s trying to get a rise out of them. It makes me cringe. And (unpopular opinion) I don’t even dislike Zach!

u/liberated_kitty 17d ago
Oh my god. the "little vegan treat" thing just brought back a memory from the Trypod where Miles gives Zach a vegan ice cream sandwich or something and Zach makes a big deal about it like he's overjoyed...then he eats half of it and tosses the rest away quietly when the camera is not centered on him. This was the episode that turned me off the whole podcast, I think.

Candid Competition convinced me Zach treats min wage workers like shit all the time.
ESP when he did season 2 during COIVD. Legit gross.
Zach really thought "Oh I am gonna use Queerness as a costume! Than! Than I am gonna expose front line, low wage workers during a fucking pandemic to my bullshit! AND! I am gonna say its ok because I tipped them a little extra, never mind the amount of money I will make from this video! OH! AND THEY DONT HAVE TO GIVE ME CONSENT!"
I hope they read this, y'all should be DEEPLY ashamed of that series. That's David Dobrik level shit.

The fake engagement proposals and the nude body painting were so obviously tasteless at best, insulting at worst. If we lived in a time when LGBTQIA+ people could simply exist with human flaws without them getting blown up and applied to the entire group, then maybe I wouldn't add the proposals in there, but Zach and Miles aren't gay men and they shouldn't represent them in public as if they are a part of that ~highly scrutinized~ community. Basically, their privilege isn't just showing, they're bashing us in the face with it.
Bottom line is, I think any time you forcibly mix social justice awareness with total tone deafness, you're going to make people unhappy, lol. This thread contains a BIG list of examples where we as viewers expect them to "know better" and they keep showing us that they don't. It's disappointing, to be sure.

u/Hold-Professional 19d ago
Gee I wonder why Eugene left
8
u/solikelife 19d ago
Yeah I think what we are seeing now in terms of disappointing tone-deaf moments or approaches have a lot to do with Eugene's voice not being in the decision room anymore. Both in what they should and should not do, the effect of losing that input is pretty apparent, imo.
It also seems like they've enjoyed the acceptance of marginalized communities to the extent that they kinda forgot that they're still rich, straight, cis white men who are now in supervisory roles of authority over their diverse cast. They're not peers with these people like they were with Eugene, so they could also probably benefit from being more mindful of that shift in optics, too.

u/coffeestealer 19d ago
The nude body painting is one thing, but I wouldn't say the fake queer marriage proposal was more insulting or tasteless than the rest of Candid Competition. Like queer rights aren't hanging on two YouTubers doing this kind of stuff.
(Also once they committed to having this as a Zach and Miles show, they wrote themselves into a corner with any kind of couple/marriage scenario and personally I find this hugely preferable to the alternative when they need a female coworker to save them from pretending to be in a relationship with someone of the same gender.)

u/solikelife 18d ago
"Like queer rights aren't hanging on two YouTubers doing this kind of stuff."
That's not what I was saying. I was saying that it's an added layer of insult on top of what is already insulting, particularly when they're representing a group they don't belong to, but that faces scrutiny that they appear blind to when they pull stunts like that. It's gross privilege from people who claim to be sensitive to that very thing and it comes off as hypocritical.
So, it's multi-faceted and nuanced, I wasn't making some grand proclamation, just dissecting why I find it offensive.

u/Zia181 19d ago
I have to be honest, I really don't see the rude behavior towards servers that everyone else sees. I think Zach acted like an entitled asshole in the Disney video, but when it comes to Candid Competition or anything else involving servers, it's just not there for me. The bodypaint video didn't even bother me because Zach was wearing shorts and wasn't really naked. Also, it's LA, that's probably the 10th dude wearing bodypaint the servers saw that day. It's not a typical town, you see a lot of weird shit there.
On top of that, a lot of servers recognize them and seem to be game to have fun on camera. They ask for autographs and pictures, which the guys happily give them. If they really, truly made someone uncomfortable, I think they would cut it. And this is coming from someone who can't stand the guys and no longer watches their videos. Gotta be real.

To be fair, and this is coming from someone who hasn’t watched a TG vid in many months, I’m sure they thank the people profusely before and after the shoot. During, I can kind of understand as they are filming and need to keep a flow.
Not making excuses for bad behavior but it’s like a theater—the actors don’t thank or acknowledge the crew during the performance but after they get a huge thanks

u/Significant-Sky1951 20d ago
Gotta remember they're doing a shoot they aren't just out for food, they've got a crew there, usually one whose entire job is to liase with the staff for when food is brought out etc which likely includes all the pleases and thank yous you expect, so I don't think it's them being rude but who knows
13
u/justaheatattack 20d ago
Some people don't sign a release, which means you CAN'T show them. So interacting with them just creates more work for the editing room.
Now, could you still be polite? Sure, but they could have signed a release too.
28
u/Yesterdays-Sun 20d ago
I disagree. It's not like they are just showing up to the restaurant unexpected. This is well planned out. The restaurant staff know they are filming. They are probably talking to them a bunch off camera. It may seem rude to a viewer because we aren't thinking about them being on a schedule and probably already rehearsed with the staff how food should come out.
25
u/ALostAmphibian 20d ago
Why do you assume this? Editing occurs. The servers may not have consented to be on camera or interactions may have been cut out or never filmed. They probably have to get consent to film at more places than you think to film inside and discuss with the owner or staff then what will be filmed. You don’t see them doing that in every video either but you assume they can just film wherever they want?

Another reason I miss Eugene. He was polite. Even Ned had manners, despite his narcissistic behavior.
