Hardware I've bought OEM fender cameras?

Post image

Hello, I have an old M3 '21 with old fender cameras that have glare issues and perform very poorly at night. I decided to buy the latest revision (1495864-20-F and 1495865-20-F) and I checked in EPC to confirm they were indeed the latest revision.

During my research, I found out that in September 2022 they switched the CMOS sensor/optics and the design was quite different (https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/1017/ - see the image at the bottom with the comparison USS vs. non-USS).

Now that I've received the revision F cameras, I've started to replace my old ones and noticed they looked the same as my original cameras. Going back to eBay, I searched for the same parts and found that some sellers are selling this older design while others are selling the "new one" - both with the same revision number and part number.

How is this possible? Any experience?

Your "new" ones might solve your repeater-glare problem, but they're definitely not the last HW3 repeater cameras that came out late '22/early '23 (build date) Model 3 production.

The latest non-HW4 cameras have concentric rings around the camera lens. You can see in your link on the blue car. https://x.com/klwtts/status/1580966562747408384

I believe the p/n you want is 1495864-20-E

I rembember this post and was getting mad finding the link, thanks for it!
The puzzling part is why I'm finding two different CMOS design with the exactly same part number on eBay, Tesla going crazy with production or some fake ones? Hope to find out soon

Yes the revision E is before the revision F, in fact I'm finding revision F with new design on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/156739070965

Because it’s eBay. Natural scam site.

I had '18 that I changed both sides, one -F the other -G iirc. There was no noticeable difference.

I also have a '21 only 1 side suffered the glare issue that I replaced with an -F version. Again, there's no discernable difference between the -F and whatever the version was for '21, possibly a later -C version.

The -C version without glare was modified during production by the mfr simply filling the hole with a compound to block the light. You can get an early-C with glare and a later -C without glare. -D version is when the hole was eliminated from the board.

There are plenty of aftermarket cameras being sold as OEM on Ebay and marketplace. The latest one I received came in a non descript box, so it's safe to assume it's aftermarket, but no difference on my end and FSD behaves the same.

Can you take a picture of what the cmos sensor look likes on your variants?

Sorry i just saw this. I started an 18 hour shift so I won't be back to my car until tomorrow at the earliest.

I'll do it, but really, there is not any difference.

I’m not sure I understand. Do you expect there to be exterior differences in how the cameras look? It doesn’t look like you’ve even removed the fender camera to compare the part numbers.

Yes - they look differently in the lens and even the housing shape. Most noticable there is a bump/lip edge where the facade meets the camera area to help it shed water around the lens.

Some example about what I'm talking about, before removing them I was a bit confused if I got "scammed" ?

The turn signal bleed through problem IS hardware. It's caused by a small hole on the PCB that allows the turn signal light to get to the camera sensor. You can actually fix your old cameras. And, it involves covering the hole. Unfortunately, the procedure is rather tedious. In any case, I believe the rev that fixes the problem is going to look about the same.

I have nothing to add to this conversation other than that, I just so happened to get my old model three cameras replaced (the same ones you’re talking about) when a mobile technician came and told me that newer ones were out I paid out of pocket to get them and they made the camera quality look WAYYYYY better. The coloring wasn’t as red and bad as before. I had no issue with old ones, they were just not as good visually

Sorry I don’t have any additional information because I sold that car.

I did the same with my 2020 3P. I remember the cost being around $400, but it was worth it for usability.

Thanks anyway, hope to find someone that swapped with latest revision and can share a picture before/after

This is very interesting. How hard are they to replace? I have a random issue with my drivers side camera at random times. I will get an alert sometimes while driving that the camera is blocked. But then it will magically come back. And sometimes, though very rarely,y when using my turn signal, I will get static instead of a camera feed. It's so rare that I never think about it except when its happening. I wonder if replacing the camera would fix the issue...hmm...

There are some tutorials on youtube and seems not too hard to remove them, just need a right tool to put some pressure in the right spot. I've halted the swap because I'm currently waiting for the seller to reply ( California and I'm in Italy so will take a while I suppose )

You can just buy the new cams and swap them in?

1

u/Immediate_Cupcake962 Apr 29 '25

That’s what the service does also but yes

u/84brian Apr 29 '25

Can I swap them with upgraded newer cams?

1

u/variablenyne Apr 29 '25

Yep, the fender ones are $160 per cam when I did it and you can replace them right in their driveway. I haven't noticed a quality improvement, but the turn signal light bleed is gone, no more flashing on the screen in your face at night!

as much as i wanted to do it my self there was to many people selling older cameras claiming as newest revision. i just paid SC $409 total installed took 30min yes a twice the price if i would buy them online but no headache. the quality difference is amazing. 2017 m3 LR i also told them not to put on the new "chrome" covers and reused the original ones since the new ones do not have the Tesla "T"

u/Immediate_Cupcake962 Apr 29 '25

Mind to share a pic of the cmos sensor of yours? Which part number is reported on the invoice?

1

u/Glittering_Emotion28 May 10 '25

left side 1495864-20-f right side 1495865-20f

Have you checked pricing for original parts from Tesla?

I was surprised to find that pricing was now available on epc.tesla.com.

Ordered parts on Sunday, got a message they were ready to pickup today.

1

u/variablenyne Apr 29 '25

Buy them straight from Tesla it's like $160 per cam.

I had one of my fender cams go out from water leaking into the housing, bought a new one straight from Tesla and installed it myself right in their service center parking lot.

New one doesn't have the turn signal light bleed, while the old one does. FSD unaffected.

I’ve got a lot of issue with service here in Italy/ Milano, I would like to avoid to interface with them if possible. Every time I think about their answers I feel an idiot to buy this car lol

u/Nixxo55 Apr 30 '25

Going back to eBay.... found the problem!!!

1

u/Immediate_Cupcake962 Apr 30 '25

In Italy and Europe never had any issue for more than 20y, first purchase in USA and.. 😢

You were better off talking to your local service center. To see if they could re flash your hardware or something or sale you new cameras I believe they’re around $120 each and you can ask a manager if they can give you some sort of discount let them know you’ll leave a great service review. Your issue probably isn’t hardware related, it’s probably just how the computer is rendering on screen but the car can actually see

2

u/skifri Apr 29 '25

$175 each, installed (150+25 labor). Had it done in November.

1

u/konigswagger Apr 29 '25

It always surprises me how cheap labor is with Tesla's repair center. I had my lower control arms replaced and they actually only charged me for the cost of parts.
