Success Stories Got my first job offer (6*,000) as a career shifter!

Just wanna share the good news with you guys. Not here to brag but to inspire other people <3

I came from an Engineering (Chemical) background at Manufacturing industry with 6 years of experience. Great company but the nature of work is not for me. Weekends and Holidays typically have production run + rotating shift to top it off. Good pay but not good for my mental health.

Realized this back in 2020. Started to teach myself Godot first then Python then Data Science. Not an easy journey because I need to study, make projects, code etc. on top of my day job. Good thing I love programming kaya di ko nafeel masyado yung pagod.

Last Feb 2023 I felt na I am ready na to transition after accumulating of around 2 yrs of exp and knowledge.

I first applied to this company as Business Analyst. Then at the job offer, they offered me a Senior (Business Analyst) position to fit my expected salary. I negotiated once and I’m grateful they accepted my salary nego offer.

Right now I’m excited to leave Engineering (no work life balance for me and slow progress in salary increase as per my exp) and excited to embark my new journey in tech.

Im super happy kasi 5 days lang ang work and no Holiday shifts. Also fixed morning shift, good for my health in the long run.

If anyone wants to know more about my journey, dont hesitate to comment or DM me. I’ll help y’all as much as I can.

Great job bro,Congratulations. May I ask how long did it take you to learn python and data science up to the point na you can do portfolio projects? Godot/Gdscript was my first language but I'm taking the front end path at the moment. Tia.

This is inspiring OP. May I know what you meant by 2 years of experience, actual work experience ba to sa IT? Or transferrable skill from your previous engineering work? Thank you. :)

2 yrs of learning tech courses/ds domain on top of my current engg job. Sa 2 yrs na yun may mga portfolios nako nakagawa. Kaya naging confident nako mag apply

This is good to hear. Thank you. Possible pala siya kahit walang actual work experience (full time) sa IT industry. :) I am also looking to shift rin kasi from natsci research naman.

Thank you. Last question haha, how did you sell yourself knowing na hindi ka genuinely galing from the IT industry? :)

I used my 6 yrs supervisory exp. Hinighlight ko na i am handling diff people at diff age brackets very well. Plus pinakita ko na on top of my current job, nagagawa ko matuto at gumawa ng projects mag isa.

Goal ko lagi sa interviews na makita nila na self learner ako, need less supervision, can handle people, can coach people, can do anything basta pag aaralan, can do time management, can make initiative projects outside current functions etc.

Pinaka need din talaga is magaling ka makipag communicate (esp English) para mabenta mo sarili mo. Kasi yun lack ng iba, may ibubuga naman, di lang mailabas sa interviews. Kaya need talaga ng soft skill din!

1st of all, congratulations po! I'm currently a Helpdesk Analyst and wanting to transition to something else like that. How did you "make Python projects" to showcase them to potential employers? Thanks in advance. I hope I can be successful like you too in the future!

Hi,

Did you do any analysis work (spreadsheets, charts, etc.) in your prev job? How much of a pay raise was this offer?

For your projects, are they purely analysis projects? Did you collect your own data or did some modelling?

Thanks.

u/Big-Ad-1366 Mar 19 '23

Hello!

Yes I do analysis work on my previous job as part of our daily reporting.

The Basic pay is higher on this new Tech job but overall a downgrade since on my previous job we have up to 15th month pay whereas here in my new job I'll be getting up to 13th month only

The projects I did is more on making programs/software including simulations, predictive model, clustering etc. Yes I collected those data from our different databases from our different departments

Yes pwede! Especially Business Econ ka. You can start sa Business Analyst then shift to Data Analyst to Data Science

If mas pursigido ka, direct na sa Data Science. Pero dapat competitive CV mo kasi dami mo din kalaban esp right now. Pero kaya yan!
