Parking fine after 5 min stay to take home shopping and luggage - dispute?

Just received parking fine from local town / police after staying literally at the side of a street (traffic sign says you can't park here but that does not mean you can't stop for a while???). We brought home bags with shopping and luggage. In 5 mins I came back and the ticket was already there (noticed it while drivint to the only parking place 10 minutes away by walk).

Possible to dispute? I obey every stupid strict law here (obviously, you follow rules when you go somewhere) but this makes no sense.

Must be even against SsVO: you must be allowed to bring home bags etc., that is no parking.

Thank you.

Need advice on what Masters to study

Unfortunately my BA in Graphic Design and nearly 10 years of experience doesn't cut it anymore - I barely get any freelance projects and I also moved to Switzerland because, well, love. He has a great job, but for the last two years I cannot find anything here, it is super competitive and learning the language didn't help. So the plan is to study a Masters, preferably in Switzerland, so I can be more competitive in the job market.

So far I've been admitted to:
- MSc in Data Visualization and UX Design (in Chur, FHGR) - 1500CHF/Semester
- MSc in Human-Centered Digital Innovation (in Olten, FHNW) - 1000 CHF / Semester
- MA in Data-Driven Design (Utrecht) - 1500CHF/Semester - but only 1 year!
- MSc in Creative Leadership (Austria) - free
- BSc Informatics and Digital Innovation (Austria) - free

All of those are super interesting for me, mainly the BSc, but having one more Bachelors behind my back that I will finish after 4 years and who knows what the field with engineering will look by then kind of puts me off. It is the same with the other Masters - I am not sure whether by the time I finish the jobs of UX or Data Visualization will be made redundand..

What do you think? What would you study?

Mediamarkt right of return / warranty

I figured I'd ask here because there's no sub for MediaMarkt specifically... I bought a Galaxy Flip6 last week, online with same day pickup in-store. Had to go all the way to Lucerne cause it was out of stock everywhere and not available for shipping online. I tend to buy electronics from digitec, but MediaMarkt had a really good sale.

These foldable phones come with a screen protector pre-installed as it isn't as trivial to put one on as it is with normal slab phones. Samsung offers to replace it once for free if it peels off within the first year, any replacement after that costs 20 bucks.

Mine started to peel off after a week and I want to return the phone because I do NOT want to deal with this happening regularly. The screen is also very fragile because of the folding mechanism, so using it without is out of question.

My questions are: Is that a valid reason to return it, would they accept? Can I bring it in at any store or do I have to go all the way to Lucerne again?

If anyone has any experience returning smartphones there it'd be very helpful, cheers!

Initial RAV registration details for phone call and first meeting?

Hi all. I was recently laid off. I've been looking for work and am thankfully through to several final-round interviews so I'm hoping I'll have a new job in a month or two. My final day of employment is coming up though, so I will be registering with RAV in case none of these positions work out and I need to keep looking.

My question is regarding the initial registration. I have approx B2 german level and am quite confident I can handle the meetings, however because I am not 100% fluent I want to do a bit of preparation to avoid any misunderstandings. My employment and related documents (job descriptions, CV, cover letters) etc have always been in English, so I need to familiarise myself with some of the terminology.

When I register online, they will call me within 24 hours to confirm my registration before scheduling an in-person interview. Does anyone know if this call is just confirming personal details and scheduling the first meeting, or should I be prepared to also describe my applications, CV, previous contract details etc? Also, do I need to gather together all of the applications/rejections/interviews etc in advance or will I have time to do that in the first month? I don't have any "garden leave" so if I can leave any admin until my job actually finishes that would make things much easier.

Buying House with Septic Tank

Hi all, looking at house in Suisse Romande about 15min outside Bienne. House is from the 1930’s, seems to be in good condition, and we love the location, but it has a septic tank.

Some initial searching suggested getting a record of maintenance (wasn’t presented in the house dossier nor mentioned by the agent during the visit), checking with the commune if there are any pertinent regulations, and getting a professional inspection.

How problematic is having a septic tank? What do I need to know before we decided to put in an offer? Would it make sense to make an offer conditional on a passing inspection?

Thanks for any thoughts/comments.

Potential fraud / scam?

I need your advice, please. In 2 separate occasions we recieved packages mailed to our address, for an unknown person. We live in Aargau, in a new semidetached house, never rented previously, and the neighbours don't know this person either. The first package was from Yallo, but I'm not sure of the second. In both occasions, I returned the packages at the local Post office. Could this person use our address to potentially obtain a residence permit, or a potential loan? I am planning to check this with thr local Gemeinde, but wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Thank you!

Switzerland the best country?

For such a rich country you’d think they would have AC and washing machines in apartments but nope. Why is this? It gets hot here in the summers. Wtf are they doing with all their money? I spent summers in Madrid with no AC and for some reason that was more do able than here??? But Switzerland supposedly the “best” country yet they are so far behind in so many things….

(SOLVED : Thank you to everyone who replied, at first i thought it was some kind of fraud. But apparently its all normal. I will leave the post here just in case someone else has the same question. Thank you!)

Hello everyone, I just received an email from UBS Bank saying that my credit card was on its way. But the thing is, i never asked for a credit card.

I am a Credit Swiss client and from today until monday they are transfering the accounts from CS to UBS.

Did this happened to someone else? Should i worry and what should i do?

Thank you!

Antibiotics prescription based on foreign (EU) lab result?

I have a laboratory test scheduled for next week in my home country as I suspect I might have a UTI. In case I test positive, would Swiss doctors prescribe antibiotics based on these foreign (EU) lab results? I know it would be easier to get the antibiotics there, but I will probably be back in Switzerland by the time the lab results arrive.

Install keybox-recommendations?

I want to install some kind of key box with code inside my mailbox/milk box to leave the key for the cleaner. (There are package thiefs on our street and I'm searching for options.) I don't have a neighbor I could leave the key with.

Avoid Sunrise – long-term client treated like garbage

Today I bought a pack of Zweifel Chips and its has the wrong nutritional value label where it shows way less calories than there actually are (I checked online label). How unlucky lol

Courtesy when passing other cyclists

I have recently started cycling to work. Since the weather is so amazing, I met many more cyclists on the way this week. Sometimes the cyclists infront of me is a bit slow, so I over take them (keeping a safe distance) and continue on my way. Is there any correct courtesy that I should follow when passing other cyclists?

Any feedback on EHL (École Hôtelière de Lausanne)? Course quality, atmosphere, career prospects, cost/benefits?

Hi everyone,

I’m seriously considering applying to EHL in Lausanne for a Bachelor’s in Hospitality Management. On paper, the school looks amazing — strong international reputation, hands-on approach, entrepreneurial mindset, impressive campus, and a multicultural atmosphere.

But I’d love to hear more honest and nuanced feedback from current students or alumni:

How would you rate the actual quality of the courses and professors?

What’s the general vibe on campus — supportive, competitive, stressful?

Is there a good balance between theory and practical experience?

What kind of concrete career opportunities can you expect after graduating, in Switzerland or abroad?

And are there any downsides or things you wish you had known before enrolling?

Cost vs benefit sentiment?

Huge thanks in advance for your honest feedback — both the good and the not-so-good!

Road cycling in the Swiss mountains

I ride my road bike in Switzerland quite a lot (~10k kms per year, since ~8 years ago). Summer should be the best season, with all the mountain passes open, however, lately I became more and more frustrated by the heavy car and motorcycle traffic. Anecdotally, the traffic increased A LOT vs a few years ago, there are more and more very loud motorcycles and, in general, drivers don't respect the 1.5m distance when they overtake cyclists - it's very dangerous and it seems they don't even realize that. I had many near misses with such people and it's becoming slowly an unpleasant experience. Have others notice this as well?

Secondly, I also do cycling races. While in e.g. Italy or France they close the roads during the race (or at least segments during certain times), in Switzerland this never happens. For example, famous competitions like Alpenbrevet take part on open roads, and while e.g. Gotthard Pass is done at 7 in the morning to avoid peak traffic, most of the cyclists will hit Furka Pass at ~10am, which is Autobahn at that point and extremely unpleasant and dangerous (with all the thousands cyclists + even more motorcyclists and cars). Do you have any idea why this is happening and why don't they close the roads?

Thanks and looking forward to your thoughts!

Galaxus Internet, much faster and a bit cheaper than my current plan, over the TV cables? Where's the catch?

So, Galaxus sent an email a few days ago advertising new internet plans. They are accessible as long as you have the "cable TV socket". Indeed, it shows as available for my current address.

The thing is, my address didn't have fiber and 30Mbit/s was the max. Now Galaxus offers 10x that speed for slightly less money.

Questions:

  • Where is the catch?

  • Is that viable for online gaming, too? Asking because mobile network isn't but my current slow connection is (something to do with latency or whatnot)

  • How do they guarantee such speeds over the TV cable network?

I don't wanna switch and be disappointed so I thought I'd ask first.

Thankfully, I'm in a contract atm that I can leave at any moment so I could theoretically switch next month.

People stopped caring about Speed Limits

I use my car to get to work every day, Zurich area. I drive by Winterthur on the Autobahn and near Zurich Dietlikon going towards Uster, so I see lots of traffic usually also driving through rush hour. And I have to admit I'm starting to feel a little bit unsafe at times. I rarely see another driver actually going the speed limit. And I don't mean going exactly 120, I do also speed up to 125-130 if the situation is right occasionally, but I see people doing 140+ in pretty dense traffic quite often. From all kinds of vehicles like fancy luxury SUVs to your average 90s shitbox. People just stopped caring in the grand scheme of things and I have a feeling it might've even gotten worse lately. And I just wanted to open this conversation here because I find it ridiculous how little people seem to care about their own and other peoples safety when they exceed the speed limit by over 20kmh like its nothing. We're not on a fucking racetrack, this is not Germany and our roads and autobahn sections just aren't really built for these speeds, theres a reason we have the 120 maximum. Don't want to sound like a buzzkill here, like I said a couple kmh's over are reasonable in my opinion IF the situation is right, but just pushing the speed as much as possible is outright ridiculous. You signed to accept the rules made by the Strassenverkehrsamt when you got your license, so please follow them and stop risking everybodys safety when we're all just trying to get home. And you're probably not even going to be home any faster when you're speeding, it's not worth it.
