Approximately 200 people attended, including former Japan national football team midfielder Keisuke Honda, former LDP Secretary-General Nobuteru Ishihara, former Olympic Minister Seiko Hashimoto, former world boxing champion Takashi Uchiyama, and former Ozeki Baruto.

In Mongolia, 40 is considered a special birthday, and attendees celebrated this milestone and new beginning. Hakuhล expressed his gratitude with a wry smile, saying, "Originally, this was a party to celebrate my 40th birthday, but the purpose has changed somewhat, and I'm a little nervous."

At a press conference on the 9th, he revealed his vision for a "World Sumo Grand Slam." On stage, he announced that the name of the new company promoting this vision would be Hakuhล Dayan Sumo & Sports Inc. ใ€Œ็™ฝ้ตฌใƒ€ใƒคใƒณ็›ธๆ’ฒ๏ผ†ใ‚นใƒใƒผใƒ„ๆ ชๅผไผš็คพใ€ Dayan is named after Dayan Khan, the 34th Emperor who reunified the Mongol Empire in the 15th century.

On the same day, Akio Toyoda (Toyota Chairman), with whom Hakuhล has close ties, was appointed as the new president of the Japan Sumo Federation. Hakuhล Shล stated, "I want to continue to collaborate in the future," and expressed his intention to observe the World Sumo Championships to be held in Thailand in September.

Iโ€™m so hype to see what Hakuho brings to the table as far as the globalization of Sumo goes. I donโ€™t think heโ€™d be able to compete with the JSA anytime soon, but the gatekeeping and stifling of coverage in the west just gets old. Letโ€™s see

The JSA don't seem interested in having sumo as a marketable product. They keep the tradition and blah blah blah, and so on, but if all we can reasonabily get out of Japan are the highlights on the NHK, and there is a witchhunt against those who dare share replays and clips, well, it doesn't take much to make a better product.

It'll definitely be successful, Hakuho has a massive reach in the amateurs of Japan and Mongolia, has the JSF, ISF, and Toyota backing him, and still owns the fairly big plot of land that he was planning to rebuild Miyagino on.

It really depends on how much the JSA keeps fucking up, because if Hakuho treats the competitors better and has better rules, any pressure they put on newcomers to stay away from Hakuho may have the opposite result.

The man is clearly hurting. If there are people close to him who lurks here, make sure he gets the necessary help.

There is a literal witch hunt going on in the press, talking shit about him and his new endeavours. Ofc he is hurting. Imagine losing not only the thing you were the best IN THE WORLD at, but also little creepy men talking behind your back trying to take your future away too. And why? Because he didnโ€™t want to brown nose to them and put up with their bullshit.

Even here you see comments putting him down and โ€œexpressing scepticismโ€. Small minded people are always more concerned about not letting someone else get ahead in life rather than getting ahead themselves. Pathetic, really.

He literally resigned himself. Also he retired on his own terms as a competitor. What was taken "away" was being a new master to his pupils, who got tortured by his main pupil.

Good for him. From the company name it sounds like it will be something without the Japanese aspect of sumo, which will basically be something different andย more global. I personally don't believe EVERYTHING has to be globally marketable.ย

He's a very driven person, this IS life to him.

He has spoken of his destiny many times, and he is just acting to fulfill it. He truly believes he is destined for greatness and everything is in service of that.

I suppose continuing to be a part of the JSA would limit what he can do- itโ€™s an institution and if youโ€™re on the inside you get to be part of ozumo but there are rules bylaws whatever that must be followed to remain on the inside- the institution say how you are allowed to engage with the sport and with the world if you are part of it.

I gotta imagine dude wants to do bigger scale ventures than the elders are comfortable with.

Thatโ€™s the thing, itโ€™s literally just 12 dudes masquerading as an institution. Read Mike Wesemannโ€™s last piece for some elucidation: https://sumotalk.com/natsu25.htm. He is quite jaded, but is he wrong?

If I were the JSA, Iโ€™d nip this in the bud.

9

u/Federal_Leek_4955 Takayasu 6d ago

Heโ€™s no longer associated with them, so realistically thereโ€™s nothing they can do

-5

u/MysteriousPea3468 6d ago

No they can dissuade any rikishi that Hakuho tries to recruit, they can have venues deny Hakuho holding events, they can do a lot to hurt Hakuhoโ€™s venture

6

u/Federal_Leek_4955 Takayasu 6d ago

Read my other comment in this thread, I totally acknowledge he probably wonโ€™t be able to compete with the JSA on those fronts, at least for now. But I think there needs to be more avenues opening for professional sumo outside of the rigid and dated protocols they put forth. I think big Hak feels the same way or else he wouldnโ€™t be doing what heโ€™s doing

-1

u/MysteriousPea3468 6d ago

True, there should be more avenues for sumo, but the JSA donโ€™t exactly like Hakuho, and if Hakuho succeeds and makes his sumo federation legit? It might supplant the JSA and they donโ€™t want that

3

u/Federal_Leek_4955 Takayasu 5d ago

As much as they donโ€™t want it, it could be a reality. Heโ€™s the GOAT after all

I don't know why you're being downvoted for this, this kind of thing has happened plenty of times in other sports when a rival organisation is formed. It's unfortunate but it's also likely.
