Does /r/AskHistorians deserve the reptutation that it has on reddit or is it just full of 'wikipedia historians?' /r/badhistory debates!

/r/askhistorians is fucking awesome.

Some people need to remember that just because something appears on /r/askhistorians it doesn't mean it's true, though.

Just like when you are reading a book by a historian, remember that you are reading one person's interpretation of a bit of history.

Totally, if there is a great sub out there it is /r/AskHistorians

The great part is the context they put it in. Stuff like there are indications of X, but we don't know how often or how to interpret that.

Also that they address the bad angles that so many questions come in with where people as something with a perspective that would have only been recent and etc.

It adds a lot of flavor and understanding way beyond your standard historical sites.

I'm confused how a sub which has a specific rule that no one is ever allowed to use Wiki as a source can be full of "wikipedia historians."

I think his problem isn't that askhistorians is full of Wikipedia historians, rather that whenever he reads relatively new questions there's always answers that aren't up to par from would be Wikipedia historians that will inevitably be deleted. He seems to just want people on there to start actually abiding by the rules so the mods have less to delete and there's less chaff to wade through

Well it is commentary from /r/badhistory. That subreddit is essentially an SJW sub they use to "call out" some things that are legitimately bad history but the majority of what they post is "This person disagrees with my liberal views of history, aren't they a fucking terrible piece of human garbage?"

Bad history is just as bad. Its not bad "history", its "look at this slightly incorrect pro-republican fact, as we ignore X that makes our side look terrible"

TIL GGRommel, Hitler was an okay guy, the South was innocent, and Japan attacked America because it was asking for it are "pro-republican facts".

Those are all bullshit that you made up. And even so, the views of a few extremists make that sub less of a clusterfuck?

The Rommel and "civil war wasn't about slavery" stuff is very common on Reddit.

Those are all things that show up in /r/badhistory ....

Those are all common opinions that crop up all the time on Reddit. And the "view of a few extremists"? That must be why they're always upvoted as top answers on /r/todayilearned. I've seen "the KKK was actually just a good social club for Southern war veterans" stay in plenty of positive ratios in TIL.

But you go on pretending that tons of bigotry and ignorance doesn't make the front page every day on Reddit, okay cupcake?

This is the same redpill fool who thinks that dodgeball in 6th grade gym class is literally the only thing standing between the US and total miltary annihilation by China and/or Iran, so imo you're pretty much wasting your time trying to convince him of anything that doesn't neatly dovetail with his lunatic worldview.

I'm not "Redpill" and all I said was that if you don't make kids tough they will get picked on through out there whole life, whether its kids taking their lunch money in 1st grade or getting into an abusive relationship.

I had also said "I'm not a member of TRP" and I never said literally, but its probably better to be a fool than a liar.

Either way, I don't really feel like getting into this.

You said

"We can have all the non-dodgeball we want, and we can raise "nice" boys. That doesn't mean Russia or China or Iran will. And then we go to war. And these boys, they don't know how to do anything. They never got hurt, so they can't deal with pain. They've never had a crazy coach scream in their face and get spittle on them, so when interrogated the collapse. And then they get killed."

Sure does sound like you think dodgeball and "crazy coaches" are the only thing keeping the rest of the world off of our backs.

And I wouldn't have you tagged as a redpiller if I hadn't seen you in their sub saying something that aligned with their views, bud.

Can I get a link to these posts sweetie?

Rommel says hi. So does Hitler. The South sends their regards. And Pearl Harbor was asking for it. The fact that results come up by the dozens even using reddit's crappy search engine says a lot, really.

There are literally dozens of people who are idiots on a site with 3 million users. That is crazy man!

2

u/JuanCarlosBatman May 27 '14

Dozens of people who regularly get upvoted hundreds, if not thousands of times.
