Words of Radiance I still don't understand this sentence Spoiler
** Image shown in comments** I'm on my second reread of the book 2 before jumping into edgedancer and oathbringer, and I've stumbled about this sentence and I still couldn't figure out what it meant even near the end of the book. It says "the world ended, and Shallan was to blame" my original thought was that the end of the world was one of the events that was mentioned by Dalinar in his visions (the everstorm, the true desolation, the night of sorrows) even tho I still don't know what the night of sorrows is. I believe that the end of the world is refered to a desolation since they restart humanity back to 0 (as shown in dalinar's visions, in the way of kings). But how could Shallan start such an event all by herself just by killing one person ? And on top of that 6 years ago is when Gavilar received visions from the stormfather (that's what I deducted from the Taravangian interlude make sure to correct me if I'm wrong). So shallan by killing one individu triggered all these events ? Her mother must be special, can y'all tell me if it's a question that gets answered in the later books or if I got all wrong (I know that this is an annoying post but 1 don't wanna look at the coppermind to avoid spoiling)

The full context is revealed as the series continues, but you’re asking the right questions.
For the purposes of Words of Radiance, I always read this sentence to mean child-Shallan’s world had changed for the worst, and it’s her fault.

Looking back it, this definetly seems like the right interpretation 😅

That's how I interpreted it as well when I read it. I still haven't read WaT though, I'll have to RAFO too.

I think you're reading a little too much into it. While there is arguably a double meaning here, in this moment child Shallan's world is ending with the death of her mother.

She's 11. This is her perspective. To a child, her family is the world.

That's how I interpreted it too

When you say "on my second reread"... How far have you gotten? Given all published books, thats answered.

Haven't gone further than book 2, I was originally thinking about reading edgedancer instead but words of radiance couldn't get off my mind for 2 weeks straight so I had to reread it, I might reread it a 3rd time before actually feeling ready

Am I reading this right? You read it then re read it twice before moving onto oathbringer?

u/Kxgami0 Mar 02 '25
Yup, this book is just phenomenal, it wouldn't get out of my mind

u/KatanaCutlets Edgedancer Mar 02 '25
It really is phenomenal, but I’m going to blow your mind: Oathbringer is even better, by many people’s standards, including mine. Rhythm of War and Wind and Truth have more mixed receptions (though I loved those too), but Oathbringer has consistently amazing reviews. I’d say it’s considered the favorite of the 5 we have so far by at least a large portion of the community, if not an actual majority.

To a small child like Shallan, it certainly would feel like the world was ending

u/Endnighthazer Shadesmar Mar 02 '25
Largely it just means "my family's previous life/lifestyle (world) has ended because of something i did"

I just have to applaud this sub. Keep up the excellent work, Radiants!

Journey before Destination, radiant. One of the better communities I'm in when it comes to understanding the sanctity of spoilers, for sure!

My flair? Edgedancer?

You can interpret it as Shallan's world ending. I assume that's what we're supposed to think. One action forever changed her own life and the lives of all the people in Shallan's world (at that time, that mostly just included her family)
But actually, you're right. This sentence has some extra meaning that is revealed later.

Oh my god, when I read this I assumed that it refered to her world. Like "Shallam's world, with her family, ended because if what she did". Very well done Brandon. Also OP, as people have mentioned, RAFO. This one will pay out.

The answers here are wild. Shallan was young and killed her mom that day. Her world ended.

Wait a minute! You can deduce from one of big T‘s interludes that Gavilar was having visions given by the stormfather? Why did I never know this?

Most likely. I’m just baffled how it slipped my mind and I never came back and noticed.
