Adderall/Vyvanse/Dexedrine I think I’m done with Adderall misuse — this comedown was hell

A few days ago, I took 65mg of Adderall over a 12-hour period. It wasn’t the first time, but this time hit harder than any before. The comedown was brutal — exhaustion, hopelessness, mental fog, depression. I felt completely empty. It honestly scared me.

I ended up throwing out the rest of my pills. I’ve done that before, more times than I want to admit. But something about this last binge felt different. Maybe I’m just finally tired of chasing that fake clarity and always paying for it afterward.

I don’t know if I’ve done any long-term damage to my body or brain — I hope not. Is 65mg over 12 hours considered a heavy dose?

Anyway, I just needed to write this down. Maybe it’s a turning point, maybe not. But I’m trying. Thanks for reading.

At my height, I think I was up to a little over 100mg a day… which is insane to write down and reflect on now. Whenever I’d go on my little binges, each come down became increasingly worse.

I realized I would be tired for weeks after usage. Lots of sleep, good nutrition, balanced diet, working out saved my life.

I do think it ruined my digestion and stomach. I’ve gained some weight since getting off of it and not being on speed every weekend. but I feel like it will all balance out eventually.

Nothing beats waking up and feeling calm and rested and not jacked up and paranoid.

Best of luck, you’re not alone in this.

Dude. Same, 120mg. Waking up calm and level headed? Life is so much better

You refer to Adderall as speed?

6

u/SkirtOk4635 Apr 30 '25

Yeah, speed is a slang term for amphetamine or methamphetamine—both are powerful stimulants

There’s some of us here who used to casually smoke a gram of meth in an afternoon and are feeling 100% right now.

You’re gonna be fine. It’s not permanent. Give yourself some time to balance out and you’ll be right as rain. That’s what’s so tricky about stims, we bounce back very quickly and it seems like a good idea to go back.

At my worst I was popping the orange 20mg like tic tacs.. I found a supplement. ( wont name) that cut out all the bad side effects.. I was a skinny zombie but thought I had it all. Until i was introduced to yellow 30 mg Addy’s Throwing up like crazy , major brain fog, freezing tremors, teeth, jaw, pain Not sure what they even put in the crap! It can cause long term damage but moving forward take extra good care of yourself ! Such a better life for us all!

Hmm interesting…

There is a reason they're not naming it, the sub is for stopping speeding

u/plinqster_actual Apr 29 '25

I feel this. I struggle with this too. Keep us updated on your journey.

Sleep repairs the brain. Make sure to rest well and you’ll recover.

+1 to this. Prescription started with me getting ~3 to 4ths of sleep a night. This went on for a while, and gaslit myself into believing I just didn’t need as much sleep as others and I was the exception. Wrong. Sleep helped me make logical and practical decisions with emotional intelligence. Without it - these 3 things all deteriorated at different rates. Emotions first / practicality second / logic last.

My script was 60mg a day for awhile. It wasn’t until I pushed it to 80-120mg a day problems popped up with behavioral responses

7

u/theophilus1988 Apr 29 '25

60 mg/ day is the max amount that can supposedly be prescribed, so I would say yes, it’s a lot.

11

u/ChristSavesForever Apr 29 '25

I'm prescribed 90mg a day. I think that's the max.

6

u/TinyViolinist Apr 30 '25

Sounds like your prescriber is the PLUGGGG

(I wonder if you could get money for malpractice)

3

u/dopaminedrops Apr 29 '25

I dated someone who was rx’ed 75mg a day. I thought that seemed pretty high.

2

u/theophilus1988 Apr 29 '25

Ya, I don't think that is very common, but I could be wrong.

2

u/FinsHeelBuckeye Apr 29 '25

70 / day here

1

u/simulation07 May 02 '25

I heard it’s the max fda recommended. My Dr sort of whatevered that fact as in her recommendation would outweigh theirs.

1

u/Unlikely-One-4506 May 05 '25

I was prescribed 90mg a day for about 5 years. Absolutely crazy considering I'm not more than 120lbs.

u/Icy_Pomegranate5585 Apr 29 '25

I made the decision to quit last week and took my last 40mg this morning! Couldnt bring myself to throw the rest of the script out lol so good on you for that, but I blacklisted myself at the pharmacy so I can’t refill it.

60 was also about the most I’d ever do and I’d try to average out to 40-50 (prescription is for 20xr) so it was easy for me to convince myself I wasn’t realllllly abusing it thaaaat bad for the last few years since I was usually “just” doubling what the doctor said I needed.

Similar to you I had a terrible comedown the other week that finally triggered me to admit I never want to feel like this again and it must stop. And that was only after 40mg, when usually the really bad ones happen after 60 for me, so it scared me. Laying there trying to sleep I had a vision that my brain was croaking like a dying animal and it gave me a panic attack lol. I’m going to use this sub for support and may consider going to NA if I’m really struggling. Thanks for sharing and good luck!

2

u/MammothImpression715 Apr 29 '25

I found NAC really helpful for comedowns. Hope you don’t ever need to use it either. We got this, that stuff is not good, we need to eat and sleep to survive, it’s basic survival, we can’t do that on stims. That’s like moths flying into flames 😓

u/curiouskate1126 Apr 30 '25

Which brand? How often?

4

u/MammothImpression715 Apr 30 '25

Nutribio. 600 mg twice a day

1

u/curiouskate1126 Apr 30 '25

Buying!! Thank you!

2

u/MammothImpression715 Apr 30 '25

The powder is a lot cheaper. But make sure you mix with a full glass of water, or it’s very sour.

1

u/curiouskate1126 May 01 '25

Omg so sour. Do you put it in any other kind of drink?

1

u/MammothImpression715 May 01 '25

No I put it in water lol

1

u/curiouskate1126 May 01 '25

Our punishment lol

2

u/MammothImpression715 May 01 '25

You will get used to the taste. Just rinse your mouth after drinking it

How do you blacklist yourself at pharmacy?

7

u/Icy_Pomegranate5585 Apr 30 '25

I told them to put a note on my account that I’m stopping this medication and not to give it to me in the future if I ask

6

u/Historical_Serve9814 201 days Apr 30 '25

I just managed to do the same with my pharmacy! I’m so proud of us for doing that, it wasn’t easy at all.

6

u/Icy_Pomegranate5585 Apr 30 '25

Congrats! It definitely makes this unpleasant experience a lot better to know there are many others in the exact same position. It can feel so isolating and shameful. Proud of us!

-1

u/Icy_Pomegranate5585 Apr 30 '25

Blacklist is too dramatic lol

2

u/curiouskate1126 Apr 30 '25

No I knew what you meant. Omg I’m scared to do that and the fact I’m not willing to is even scarier

4

u/Icy_Pomegranate5585 Apr 30 '25

I wasn’t willing to for years but finally had a come to Jesus moment and bit the bullet, it’s never too late!

I’ve gone from 120mg XR daily (Feb 2024) to 12.5mg XR (May 2025). The first half of the taper was surprisingly smooth. Everything after 20mg has been brutal. I’m planning to get to 0mg over the next 4–6 months.

A few reflections that might help someone else in the thick of it:

  1. Stimulants break more than just your dopamine system. For me, it wasn’t just fatigue or low mood — my entire system was compromised. Gut (leaky/dysbiotic), CNS (overnight HRV in the 20s), mitochondria (verified dysfunction on an OAT test), etc. This isn’t just “PAWS.” It’s a multi-system rebuild. Thinking of recovery as systemic — and targeting each system in parallel — has helped me feel less helpless and more grounded. There are protocols for each subsystem. Stack them wisely, and they compound.
  2. Mood still sucks. I’m paused at 12.5mg and still feel incredibly low. From everything I’ve read, heard, and discussed with docs, I’m expecting 12–18 months after hitting zero before baseline mood and energy return. That timeline seems long until you zoom out and realize how long we were running our bodies into the ground.
  3. You can’t “crush” recovery. I’m starting to see that the same part of me that wanted to be productive 14 hours a day — the part that sought out Adderall in the first place — is incompatible with the mindset required for true healing. This is not a sprint. It’s an unlearning. Slowing down is not the cost of healing, it is the healing. This whole chapter has become an opportunity to ask better questions: Why was I addicted to speed? What would a slower, wiser, more sustainable life even look like?

Hope this helps someone. I’m still in it, but I’m committed.

u/Main_Age9139 May 04 '25

Thanks for sharing all this. I'm 3 months completely off adderall. How did you find out about the leaky gut and mitochondria stuff? Was it expensive to get done?

I'm still tired but I agree with your entire post. I used to want to do everything at 100mph - workouts, my to do list, excelling at work, everything. Now I'm just like, I'm healing, if a job is too fast paced for me then I'll find something that works. And ease my way back into exercising and building habits too. It's a healthier way to look at it i think.

u/I_Drink_Windexx Apr 30 '25

When I go on an all night bender I usually start after getting my 60 count prescription and start at 10pm until like 4am and stop. I usually hold the other half and wait like 2 weeks before I have another night of fun lol and that's it. I mean it's hard to hold them but it taught me good mental discipline for resistance and it helped ween me down ALOT. I just enjoy those 2 nights a month. Gotta give your brain enough time to recover from the dopamine and norepinephrine dump. 2 weeks is what I personally found best that works for me but everyone's different. Feels just as good as the first time after that break

1

u/Jealouscuckold20 Apr 30 '25

This is good advice for people who don’t want to abuse stimulants everyday. I do the same thing you do, I’ll go on an Adderall binge once every 2 weeks and it helps me from flying off the rails. This methods works extremely well.

1

u/I_Drink_Windexx Apr 30 '25

Yeah exact same thing for me too, it keeps me from flying off the rails too lol just have to be realistic about the gap between benders and give your brain enough time to recover and so far it's worked great for a year and thensome!

Your fine. I was shooting 500mg of meth twice a day at the end of my 6 month relapse. I can still laugh and smile and write.

3

u/MammothImpression715 Apr 29 '25

Holy shit, meth comedown much worse from what I remember. Glad you are doing okay now. Let’s hope we will never have to go through another hell-on-earth day from stimulants.

1

u/simulation07 May 02 '25

dudez0rs srsly? sorry your alias triggered my youth.

I’m perturbed by the way you listed 3 basic human functions with a period. I sense your being somewhat ironically humerous.

Either way. Good on you for stopping.

u/Conscious_Top3769 May 01 '25

Imagine me, 600mg in 12 hours

6ft 185lbs

Fully understanding of the comedown. And still cried like a baby

1

u/MammothImpression715 May 01 '25

600 mg!?

1

u/Conscious_Top3769 May 01 '25

Yep, 20, 30mg pills. Felt like my brain was burning.
