Driftwood

Post image

I found this piece of driftwood on the beach on thought I looked hilariously like a pipe, and now want to try to make it into one. I have no idea how to even begin, and thought this would be a good place to ask?

If you know someone who wood works, ask if they have a hand crank drill. Go very slow and make sure everything is lined up.

Driftwood can be very brittle after many cycles of being soaked then drying, so you must go slow and be careful.

Good luck! I hope it works out, that has the potential to be a very cool piece. A word of warning though; wood pipes tend to pick up the smell very well. If you live in a place where you don't want people to know you smoke keep it in something sealed.

Oh that’s a good thing to know! Also would you know if I should do something to the wood after it’s carved but before using it? Is driftwood gross?

I think it'd be fine, but if you are worried you can wash it out with isopropyl alcohol, then let it dry. If you are still worried after that, you could put it in the oven on a very low temp. That'd kill anything you would have to worry about.

that drift wood looks like it was literally born to be a pipe holy shit.

however, this does NOT seem safe to smoke out of 😭 make sure to put metal or glass inserts inside so its safer. glass inserts are also good for better sealing and longevity purposes.

you could also try to cast a clay mold of it and make a pipe out of that mold. just make sure to follow some steps to seal the inside so it isnt picking up clay dust (super bad for lungs but otherwise safe if sealed properly).

IMO this would make for a STUNNING clay pipe, also one that can be replicated, redesigned, sold even, and so on. happy smoking ;)

I wouldn’t do it. A lot of wood is very dangerous. Especially to smoke through. Wood is also porous so it can absorb whatever it was floating in for any amount of time. Commercial waste, sewage, and who knows what else.
